Also, around the 1:48 mark, you can hear hints of the characteristic "Aretha" sound which we have come to know. As I said, Aretha is singing in the style of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, because this is from her early years before Respect and her world changing endeavors into soul music. However at 1:48, she starts feeling the music, and her jazz/standard delivery falls away, and the Queen of Soul comes through. "Gonna be somewhere...ooooooooooover the rainbow!" LOL! Let em have it Aretha!
This is DEFINITELY Aretha Franklin. It's from her VERY early years. This is back when her record label was trying to market her as a jazz and standards singer, because they weren't quite sure what to do with her. She's not singing in what we have come to know as the characteristic Aretha wail. She is singing in the style of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald who were her idols, hence why she sounds different. Also she was VERY young, so her voice wasn't matured fully. It's definitely Aretha.
I LOVE BOTH PATTI AND ARETHA. BOTH OF THEM SING THIS SONG BEAUTIFULLY IN THEIR OWN VOICE. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ARETHA SANG IT UNTIL LISTENING TO PATTI AND THEN WONDERING TO MY SELF THAT IT WOULD BE COOL IF ARETHA SANG THIS TOO-SO I YOUTUBED IT, AND HERE I AM. JUST WONDERFUL!!!
This is a very young Aretha, doing what she does best and that's giving a song what it needs while respecting the melody and the meaning of the lyrics.. I really think people need to revisit her Columbia Records catalog. You will be surprised how many great songs and LP's she did before Atlantic!
this is ARETHA HANDS DOWN. This sounds NOTHING like Patti. People who are making that assumption that its NOT her are used to the new aretha voice but this is how she sounded BEFORE she was the known QUEEN OF SOUL. yes that is her with the clarity and control.
Of course SHE IS ! from the CD called "The Great Aretha Franklin. The first 12 Sides", I have it ! She was 18 when she cut her first pop sides on August 1, 1960. This is the one album of Aretha's thaT has the feeling of jazz improvisation.
This is indeed Aretha Franklin. It was taken from her 1961 album "Aretha With the Ray Bryant Combo". I've had the original vinyl recording of this for many years and have enjoyed it thoroughly. It's the same album that gave us "Who Needs You" and "Maybe I Am a Fool" (among other wonderful pieces).
@keriah17 I used Shazam App on iPhone to see who sang this song. Aretha Franklin's name comes up. You can sample this song on iTune also. Yeah, this is definitely Aretha's style when she was with Columbia..
Somewhere over the rainbowWay up highAnd the dreams that you dream ofOnce in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbowBlue birds flyAnd the dreams that you dream ofDreams really do come true

Also you said that a friend of yours has this album. What is the name of it? I would LOVE to have a copy of it...on CD. Again, much thanks to your posting of this. Do you have other Aretha posting's? I'd like to see them. Thanks for setting me straight TheQueenAretha. Peace.
@deeway1963 This is from Aretha's first ever studio album at Columbia, the name of the album is "Aretha" and it was released in 1961. I did not post this. And my friend has a very one copy of the album.
I sent a reply to you TheQueenAretha about an hour ago but for some reason, it has yet to post. So I'll try again. What I admire about you is your passion for the GREATEST singers of ALL time! I got to see Aretha live at Radio City Music Hall in New Your back in March of 2008 and I thought I was in HEAVEN! I love your post of this song and listen to it often. And I must say, the more that I listen, the more that I am convinced, that yes, you are right...this is Aretha!
My bad. some parts later on in the song declares the unmatured vocals of a very young Aretha franklin. Patti's versions were, are and will always be more magical than anyone elses version of this song or any song for that matter. You go Patti.
@MrPattifan01 If by magical you mean oversung than yes. Get real. Patti knows nothing about restrain or how to proper interpreting a song. This is not Patti's song this song belongs to Judy.
This is Patti Labelle singing....not The Queen of Soul. Duh. You can tell. But that's okay. Patti nailed it. However, you need to be more truthful here, This is not Aretha. It's Patti.
@deeway1963 No its not for the last time this is Aretha Franklin. Aretha recorded this when she was 18 years old. This is 100% Aretha Franklin. No one is lying to you this is Aretha. Patti did record a version of this song from this era but it sounds nothing like this. Patti couldn't interpret a song this well.
@TheQueenAretha I love Aretha! I totally do! I She is my most fave! I'm not doubting you! Seriously! I'm not! Just feel and think and hear, that this cover is sung by Patti. Aretha is The Queen! This version, to me, does not sound like The Queen. I'm just saying
@deeway1963 You THINK! I KNOW THIS IS ARETHA. I know a friend that has this entire album. This is for sure Aretha Franklin. Case closed. It doesn't matter what you think. I am going by what i know. It doesn't sound like Aretha to you because she was very young at the time. Any real Aretha fans knows this is Aretha!
@ronnieluv this is not no patti labelle, i love patti, but she couldnt sing this beautiful. check out pattis version of this back in the 60's and you will hear how her voice was. she had nothing on aretha.

So nice to hear this song sung without all the frothing and flapping, roaring and rolling on the floor. Soulful yet not all over the place. Viva, Aretha!
This is absolutely Aretha Franklin...BUT it is a very very early Aretha Franklin recording... from the same album as her 'what a difference a day makes' and 'walk on by' it's a jazz/classics album... I can see why people thought it was Patty, because this song is synonymous with Patti and aretha hasn't sounded like this since the last 60's because of smoking bless her heart.... but It is absolutely Aretha... plus if it were Patti, there would be loads of octave clicks in it, such a Patti thing.
Actually " What A Difference A Day Makes" was recorded in 1964. This was recorded in 1964 when Aretha was only 18 and 19 that problem explain her tone.
okay. now i just want to say... patti is my preference,,,, partially because she is a friend of mine, and i truly love ALL her songs... that being said... aretha injected soul and passion into a very soulful and jazzy version of this classic. DEFINTELY beats judy garland,,, this sounds liek a great jazz ballad. i love it, but for me, it does a different effect than patti's, less passion and not as WOW! factor. but it is smooth and soothnig. could sleep to this one. they should duet.
@BackToLaBelle Those huge singing divas colaborate really rare. Their singing talents are incmprehensible, and мун competitive by the way. Non of them wants to be oversung...
"Definitely beats Judy Garland" -- hello??? Why compare them? They are both completely awesome. I love Patti too. Enjoy them all -- there's so much about life not to enjoy that we should enjoy everything wonderful.
Judging from her voice tonality and the orchestration this would be probably in the '60s and found in Columbia Records catalogue. She was with Columbia covering Dinah Washington's material but these cuts never made it at the time and were released many years after they were recorded and just stored in the archives.
thats a good one too. your so silly. You, I and everyone else knows who sounds better. I know you love Patti and thats your mamma but she can't beat what history has stated
You know i really regret saying what i just said. Because i am trying to not start fights with Patti fans. I want to make peace with Patti and Ree fans but that loser made me mad. Like i said o another video it is going to be hard to quiet the fight between Aretha and Patti because both sides are need deep into the battle.
Aretha at any age sounds better than Patti. Patti's version is like nails on a chalk board. All she does is scream. She doesn't know anything about bringing life into a song without using a whole lot of screams and wails. And you shouldn't even call yourself a Chaka fan because all you do is kiss Patti's ass. You don't give a damn about Chaka so why is you acting like you do.
its all the matter of opinion...for one this sounds NOTHING like Patti anyways..we all know Patti's verison of this is way mnore OUT OF THIS WORLD and its her show stopping song.
Owh gosh... this version makes me fall asleep... It doesn't even make me "feel" the song. Patti's version makes me laugh as she sings and dances like a chicken or probably like a drunken monkey. So which is better? I would choose Patti as it doesn't make me sleepy but brings me laughter hahaha...
Fuck you. Patti version of this song is nothing but a screamfest at best. Patti has not feeling in her version, just a bunch of noise. With Aretha you feel what she is saying. She isn't trying to show off with her vocal ability, she is gentle and full of emotion. Something Patti never possessed. Patti just overworks this song to death. Aretha wins because every version Patti has recorded is just a loud screaming mess.
I think TheQueenAretha is someone uneducated person. It could be judge from the way he/she (whatever) expresses whatever-self :o) Go ahead and support your favourite Aretha. No one is stopping you. I have my own preference for this version and no one changes that for me :o)
Oh please talk about uneducated! You Patti fans are nothing but ignorant fool. You have no business on this video or any of Aretha's videos in the first place.
I don't like aretha or patti but I dislike patti MORE. Because of exactly the reason you said. Patti screams so much and claims to sing? She totally copies Sara Vaughan, with the dynamic range. Sara I think beats all competition but thats my opinion
Well why are you on an Aretha's video if you don't like Aretha. I don't think you have ever given yourself the chance to even like her. If you can Mariah you can damn sure like Aretha. But anyways i love Sarah. I don't think she beats all competition but she was a great songstress, thats the difference between Patti and Aretha and Sarah. Aretha and Sarah are songtress, they care more about interpretation of the song. Patti is about high belts. Thats the one of the many differences about them.
@chakafan12 hay now its a difference in basing your own opinion about a certain person but you didnt have to go that far cuz that was truly an insult. just be mindful of what you say about people cuz you never know what he/she is going through and if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say nothing at all!
this is a very nice rendition of over the rainbow when aretha was still singing at her best. i wish she would have taken better care of her voice and maybe she could still sing like this! newports have since taken this voice away! When my girl patti sings this song you really see a blue bird fly over the rainbow! lol!
Aretha has a way of taking someone elses song and making it her own. This is no disrespect to the other singers, this is what a true vocalist does. I know of several songs "Say a Little Prayer" for one. Dionne did a fabulous job, but Aretha did a great job. Aretha tackles Over the Rainbow in the same manner that Judy Garland did, soft and gentle until the climax.
Do you think Sam Harris does this song as good? Or do you think he over sings it. Do you know who Sam Harris is. Go to you tube you will find him. Patti is great. In fact she is one of Sam Harris favorite singers.
No Patti and Aretha are VERy different Patti took this song and made it HER OWN! and noone can come close to doin it like that. Aretha is the QUEEN of SOUl and she not goin to do it like Patti did she goin to do it HER way.
I had long ago heard Patti's version, which is excellent, but I just heard Aretha's this morning at the end of a Lifetime movie of all places! The voice cut me from the very beginning, but, oddly, I couldn't identify it at first...Aretha's rendition is gorgeous. Judy was amazing, but Patti Labelle, Sarah Vaughan, and Aretha Franklin have taken this song to new levels of the heavens. The song takes on new meanings in their renditions...how can one put into words what words can't describe?
Aretha sings the song the way it was meant to be sung. she does not over sing it. She does not scream and holla, she sings it in a beautiful mellow sensual tone.......................onelove
I agree. I think she recorded this in 1960 and I think she was but 18 years old at the time. Beautiful pictures to go with a beautiful singer and a beautiful song.
Yes, but this is the around the time that Aretha hasn't found her true artistic voice yet, and the the type of soul shouting/belting that's a black gospel tradition, was toned down during her time at Columbia. Had Aretha recorded this under Jerry Wexler it would sound VERY different than this version.
she is still the shit y the fuck r peple comparing patti n aretha, their totally different, patti is famous for high notes aretha isnt, when u call patti to sing u expect her to be hitting high notes, aretha doesnt have too. their equal the empress of soul n the queen of soul they share the title of beiing number one. so lay off of aretha
U listen to Patti if u want to jump out of your sent and act a fool,u listen to Ree if u wanna feel it in your soul,so I agree they both are 2 different singers who have but respsect for 1another above all else.
disreegard that last comment that was back when i was young and new and naive. but there not equal aretha is better. and they both sing this song good. but aretha sings it how it should be sung. patti goes to far.

I love both Patti and Aretha, but If I had to choose it would be PATTI..hands down!...And why all this comparison away? they are good friends

UH Patti wish she did sound this amazing. This is Aretha. And nobody else.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Judging from her voice tonality and the orchestration this would be probably in the '60s and found in Columbia Records catalogue. She was with Columbia covering Dinah Washington's material but these cuts never made it at the time and were released many years after they were recorded and just stored in the archives.
fingersx88 2 years ago
Actually this song did make the cut. This was on Aretha's first Columbia Records album.

You know i really regret saying what i just said. Because i am trying to not start fights with Patti fans. I want to make peace with Patti and Ree fans but that loser made me mad. Like i said o another video it is going to be hard to quiet the fight between Aretha and Patti because both sides are need deep into the battle.

I have great respect for Judy Garland but i love Aretha's version. This is not a competition. Aretha made this song her and lets leave it at that.

Well let's give Aretha a patti song and see what she can do with it,lol
sirdaviair 3 years ago
The Queen would not waste her time singing Patti's songs. Besides, noobody has the talent of giving an oral sex to microphones except for Patti.
devilmirror 3 years ago
shut the fuck up cuz patti will sing arethas fat ass off the stage
chakafan12 2 years ago
B*tch, you are obviously confusing between screaming and singing.
devilmirror 2 years ago
Well u must be confused b/c aretha sound like she is on food that she enjoys so much.....
chakafan12 2 years ago
Aretha at any age sounds better than Patti. Patti's version is like nails on a chalk board. All she does is scream. She doesn't know anything about bringing life into a song without using a whole lot of screams and wails. And you shouldn't even call yourself a Chaka fan because all you do is kiss Patti's ass. You don't give a damn about Chaka so why is you acting like you do.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
No you need to shut the fuck up. Because Patti will never ever sing Aretha off a damn thing. She never had anything on Aretha.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
its all the matter of opinion...for one this sounds NOTHING like Patti anyways..we all know Patti's verison of this is way mnore OUT OF THIS WORLD and its her show stopping song.
hatedbyniccaz 2 years ago
Fair enough.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Owh gosh... this version makes me fall asleep... It doesn't even make me "feel" the song. Patti's version makes me laugh as she sings and dances like a chicken or probably like a drunken monkey. So which is better? I would choose Patti as it doesn't make me sleepy but brings me laughter hahaha...
Xavierxx 2 years ago
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
I think TheQueenAretha is someone uneducated person. It could be judge from the way he/she (whatever) expresses whatever-self :o) Go ahead and support your favourite Aretha. No one is stopping you. I have my own preference for this version and no one changes that for me :o)
Xavierxx 2 years ago
Oh please talk about uneducated! You Patti fans are nothing but ignorant fool. You have no business on this video or any of Aretha's videos in the first place.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
I don't like aretha or patti but I dislike patti MORE. Because of exactly the reason you said. Patti screams so much and claims to sing? She totally copies Sara Vaughan, with the dynamic range. Sara I think beats all competition but thats my opinion
XforeverlongingX 2 years ago
Well why are you on an Aretha's video if you don't like Aretha. I don't think you have ever given yourself the chance to even like her. If you can Mariah you can damn sure like Aretha. But anyways i love Sarah. I don't think she beats all competition but she was a great songstress, thats the difference between Patti and Aretha and Sarah. Aretha and Sarah are songtress, they care more about interpretation of the song. Patti is about high belts. Thats the one of the many differences about them.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
@chakafan12 hay now its a difference in basing your own opinion about a certain person but you didnt have to go that far cuz that was truly an insult. just be mindful of what you say about people cuz you never know what he/she is going through and if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say nothing at all!
deedabug411 1 year ago
This is not Aretha Franklin singing. This is Patti LaBelle.
azulsoro 3 years ago
No this is Aretha. Aretha did a version of this when she was 20 years old.

ok, i listened to it again paying attention to the riffs and it is not patti. So i stand corrected.

this is a very nice rendition of over the rainbow when aretha was still singing at her best. i wish she would have taken better care of her voice and maybe she could still sing like this! newports have since taken this voice away! When my girl patti sings this song you really see a blue bird fly over the rainbow! lol!
blkzuri 3 years ago 2
Aretha has a way of taking someone elses song and making it her own. This is no disrespect to the other singers, this is what a true vocalist does. I know of several songs "Say a Little Prayer" for one. Dionne did a fabulous job, but Aretha did a great job. Aretha tackles Over the Rainbow in the same manner that Judy Garland did, soft and gentle until the climax.

Ree's voice is pure bread,a wimsicol pedigree if u will and its the gift that keeps on giving.

Do you think Sam Harris does this song as good? Or do you think he over sings it. Do you know who Sam Harris is. Go to you tube you will find him. Patti is great. In fact she is one of Sam Harris favorite singers.
moseymama 4 years ago
obviously he tries to sing like her. but his voice is annoying. he has no power in his voice.
monrayday 3 years ago
No Patti and Aretha are VERy different Patti took this song and made it HER OWN! and noone can come close to doin it like that. Aretha is the QUEEN of SOUl and she not goin to do it like Patti did she goin to do it HER way.
DaEnviedOne 4 years ago 3
I had long ago heard Patti's version, which is excellent, but I just heard Aretha's this morning at the end of a Lifetime movie of all places! The voice cut me from the very beginning, but, oddly, I couldn't identify it at first...Aretha's rendition is gorgeous. Judy was amazing, but Patti Labelle, Sarah Vaughan, and Aretha Franklin have taken this song to new levels of the heavens. The song takes on new meanings in their renditions...how can one put into words what words can't describe?
direfranchement 4 years ago
muchas gracias por esta versión que desconocía, doña Urraca, y gracias también por incluir la letra. Magnífico gusto, es un deleite escucharla.

And Patti is NO 'ARETHA' EITHER!!!!!
stage7 4 years ago
Aretha sings the song the way it was meant to be sung. she does not over sing it. She does not scream and holla, she sings it in a beautiful mellow sensual tone.......................onelove
oneloveatatime 4 years ago
I agree. I think she recorded this in 1960 and I think she was but 18 years old at the time. Beautiful pictures to go with a beautiful singer and a beautiful song.
donnaoday 4 years ago
Yes, but this is the around the time that Aretha hasn't found her true artistic voice yet, and the the type of soul shouting/belting that's a black gospel tradition, was toned down during her time at Columbia. Had Aretha recorded this under Jerry Wexler it would sound VERY different than this version.
PrestonPowell 4 years ago
So basically record producers dictate the way a song should be sung?..I never knew that.
SoulSir 4 years ago
she is still the shit y the fuck r peple comparing patti n aretha, their totally different, patti is famous for high notes aretha isnt, when u call patti to sing u expect her to be hitting high notes, aretha doesnt have too. their equal the empress of soul n the queen of soul they share the title of beiing number one. so lay off of aretha
monrayday 4 years ago
U listen to Patti if u want to jump out of your sent and act a fool,u listen to Ree if u wanna feel it in your soul,so I agree they both are 2 different singers who have but respsect for 1another above all else.
SoulSir 4 years ago 3
disreegard that last comment that was back when i was young and new and naive. but there not equal aretha is better. and they both sing this song good. but aretha sings it how it should be sung. patti goes to far.
