Actually if you watch the whole documentary till the end.....there will be a part called freeze frame....shows you the hardship of the camera men trying to film......it was based on the part of filming the orcas wave......they were on a small boat filming close ups....the orcas actually did the wave on the boat....it was amazing to watch....you could see the camera men's faces lol
I only recently realised that orcas are actually the largest member of the dolphin family rather than true whales so they're probably much more intelligent than people realise. Several recent documentaries about their hunting tactics have led me to firmly believe they are amongst the most intelligent animals on the planet.
The only thing that I find a little bit disturbing about the Orcas killing the seal , is not that they do it, (that's nature after all and they must kill to survive ) but it's the way they do it , as they seem( to me anyway) to be enjoying it?
@AnAutumnsDay It's not enjoying a hunt, all nature programs describe the methods seperate pods use to hunt as "enjoying the kill", it's just a very efficient way of hunting. Exhaust the prey, it can't strike back so there's little chance of getting bitten. When they throw Sea Lion Pups, it's to help kill the pup without those sharp teeth striking back. Land predator's have it easy compared to animals like Orca's and Sharks.
@IAmADalek I personally believe that Orcas are highly intelligent animals , perhaps with an intelligence that is much more sophisticated than we even realise. Therefore , is it not conceivable that the hunt and the despatch of their prey , may not have turned into a form of fun or even enjoyment for these apex predators. It is not unknown amongst Humans to enjoy the the thrill of the chase /hunt , now is it? and if these animals are as intelligent as I believe they are - well ?
once again the BBC are showing Hollywood how real drama, edge of the seat thriller, no CGI and great storytelling should be brought to the screen. Unfortunately, they will never learn
One of the most beautiful and terrible things I have ever seen was when the exhausted Seal was dragged by its tail to the cold and unforgiving watery depths; you realise then that though there may be many ills in being human there are far more in any other way of life.
am I the only who saw the 'Awwwww Crap!' expression the seals face and cracked up laughing ? Gotta respect the sheer power and intelligence of the Orca though.
Yes, in a way you have to have sympathy for the seal, but yet you have to admire - nay, respect - the intelligence of these fascinating Orcas. Not only to work out how to dislodge their prey, but to work together as a team to provide what is, let's face it, no more than a meal for one of them.
Once again, Mr Attenborough and the BBC have provided a fantastic insight into just one small aspect of Mother Nature's beauty and the harsh reality of life on this planet. Long may they continue.
The more I see of Orcas , the more I wonder just how intelligent these animals really are . I cannot find anything on the net , that says that Orcas seek to attack and eat humans, which makes you wonder why not (they could do it easily) I am beginning to wonder if these animals know , that it is best to leave us well alone because as long as they do , then we will not have an excuse to kill them, as we do with almost every other animal that we regard as a threat to our safety.
@AnAutumnsDay funny you should say that. off the coast of baja calif', during the 1700's and 1800's, whales were hunted and whaling ships were attacked. when whaling stopped, the whales continued to attack the mexican fishing boats... up to about 20 years ago. now whales surface for the tourist boats on cue. they even allow people in rowing boats to touch them. i wonder, did they call a truce? the more we know, the more intelligent they appear. not having tech' doesn't mean they're stupid.
This is fascinating. I wrote an essay on this very behaviour literally last week and I hadn't understood the power of the wave that these whales create and what kind of effect it has. I'll tell you, it's certainly more impressive when watching it rather than reading about it and studying diagrams!! I have so much more respect for them now!
