  • @Sylvibear - Not to mention just a little tacky and sexist in an interview where, when asked about her inclusion, he essentially implied she initially got in because she was his girlfriend, and the end of that relationship meant there was no going back. They must be at least civil, if only for finance/label purposes. And, besides, any number of couples are able to keep working together after divorce.

  • LOVE THE FUCKIN SYNTH MELODY. 99 % perfect (perfection is for the original)

  • great cover and more haunting of the original version. jarbo was definitely one of the most impressive voices at the 80's, ethereal and sceptical way of singing, a sense of dancing in a fairy kingdoms, and the result could not be something less than this masterpiece. Surely a new approach for the mystery of love and loss, giving a new direction to the original Joy Division song. I think this cover its a hidden jem, a must for every indie 80's music lover.

  • Best ever cover version of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'

  • This is the first example I always come up with when "covers that are better than the original" come up.

  • Jarboe and Michael and the Band are the Trinity of God

  • love the dark female voice

  • Great cover.

  • Thank you. I have been wanting to hear this again for a long time.

  • @zeller291 there's no such thing as originality.

  • This destroys the original. Fuck all the JD purists. Fuck all of you.

  • @MrOranj I'm sorry, but you can't beat original inspiration. Period.

  • I like her voice, i become sad, when i hear this cover from Joy Division. I find it better than the original. Okay some of you want to kill me for that.

  • @thetimewasting why would someone decide to have a go because you like this better than the original? it's your personal taste, man. Some people are so fascist about Joy Division. I mean, yeah, they're something else but, come on, the song's not a national fucking emblem.

  • I prefer this to the version with Gira singing. Great cover. She desecrates 'Black Eyed Dog', but I like it!

  • Normally I am not a fan of "love will tear us apart" covers because the original is the only true one, but Jarboe has such a beautiful voice...

Saw her live, I promise its an experience

  • Amazing vocals!! Excellent post hanman1!!

  • yes beautifull ... the best cover ...

  • Poor - is he a Beckettian character? You fraudulent cunt H1.

  • @parksy010101

    go easy

  • though I find the female point of view very haunting and original,I believe the She-swan puts too much of an effort in this.Sometimes very short cut phrases can be so much more interesting. She tries to be an opera star just a bit too much.Lose a bit of vibratio would be my advise.....and yet....wooooowyyyy......love and kisses!

  • this song takes into fukin oblivian, you just go with the the fuking flow! i love this version!

  • Jarboe does not emo-te. Think callback to romantic eras. I smell no cheese save the aged skill gained via gnosis + change

  • this is possibly the best song ever and the original was best but let it be covered this was done way back and is great also check out in the nurserys cover its great also

  • Beautiful and totally connected to the reflective strength Ian Curtis gave to this, Joy Division's and his best song. Delicate, straight from the heart, and full of feeling -- that makes it Jarboe's own and no slavish recitation. Indeed, the Swans' very singular style and deep inhabiting of the song really puts this over most other bands and versions. U2 are to be commended for trying, but what a bombastic job Bono does, which reveals nothing. This version opens doors. Hear, Hear!

  • I don't get why people orgasm over Jarboe's voice. Always sounds like she is over-emoting to me, it just sounds overdone. Plus the background choral vocals are just way too much here. But hey, that's just me.

  • no she's good and thorough and takes you for a ride

  • I have a hard time understanding how people would say they prefer this version to Joy Division's; I mean Ian Curtis wrote the lyrics so he had the closest connection to them. I know everyone has their own tastes in what they prefer, but coming out and saying you prefer it to Joy Division's version is insulting the origin of the song's existence. Maybe I'm just ranting, but that's how I feel.

  • This tune is so unbelievably captivating - almost more than one can bear. Once I would hear this I fell in love with Jarboe's voice instantly . 2009 I had the chance to attend her show in Frankfurt. But I had to quit due to the announcement of a concert by My Bloody Valentine on that very day. A tricky decision though...

  • Thank You :)

  • Jarboe nails this song here - spot fucking on.

  • I think this version is better than the Joy Division original RIP, no disrespect intended :)

  • kukynphunt, Love Joy Division original, but agree. Jarboe really transcends here. This is a remarkable piece.

  • I have read a little of Jarboe's bio, indeed she has trancended, maybe it's bias on my part because I hear her passion more acutely by knowing her story. It is nice to know that there are others around who appreciate this kind of music }:>

  • I love this version above Gira's and JD's

There's just a simple pain to Jarboe's vocals that the song perfectly lends itself to...

"and theres a taste in my mouth...as desperation takes hold"...

    brilliant

  • Hauntingly beautiful indeed.

  • A friend just turned me on to them, he posted a clip on Facebook. i love it!

  • such great.. love it.. thx for posting.. best regards from germany

  • I saw swans in oslo in 87 or so, this was the opening number, only Jarboe on stage with blue and white spots. It was undiscribably good, not to mention the rest of that consert.

  • what the fuck is wrong with you people are you deaf, this is a brilliant cover, better than most others who have covered this song!!!

  • terrible - the one with Gira singing is pretty good though - it fits their sound and does not insult the original

  • Only LWTUA cover worth listening to.

  • swans are good, but this is an insult to the original.

  • They're called "Swans", NOT "The Swans", ignorant.

  • One of the comparitively few examples of a cover being superior to the original - didn't think I'd say that about any Joy Division song, let alone their finest. Still, that's how good Swans are - and in it's way, as devastating as anything else that Swans have created. Crushingly powerful.

  • I've always liked Joy Division's version the best, but another cover that I love of this tune is the one that Susanna and The Magical Orchestra did.

    peep that one

  • ya i love that one by Susanna...its simply breath taking!

  • Exactly! Unfortunately the video is cheesy and dulls the song for me. But without the video, it's amazing.

  • I had never heard this version before --thank you!

  • Ever hear Jarboe doing cover of DCD - American Dreaming? Now, that, is a good cover.

  • Hey, do know where I could find that cover of 'American Dreaming'? Would love to hear it! Thanks...

  • Google is your friend. I just found a free mp3; it is almost as good as you'd think, tho' I prefer her cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart to the American Dreaming one.

But as Earth Loop Recall would say - all covers are evil :o)

  • Pretty cover of that song

  • It's good but I like the version with Gira on vocals better

  • ... for a tousand years... ihre stimme bereitet ein wohliges kribbeln...

  • Great cover. Two of my favorite bands involved on this cover. Nothing beats JD but Jarboe does a damn fine job with this song.

  • lsiten to the flowing tears cover, its a bit darker than most but i think it really isa fantastic cover.

  • what's with adding a "The" in front of the name?

pedantic as hell I know, but come on, get it right.

  • As the man in the orthopedic shoes said `I stand corrected`.Is it me but in this picture she looks like the actress Embeth Davidtz ?

  • @tgcryder

Who gives a fuck . Don't like it ? Post your own shit .

  • @tgcryder No. Look at their record covers, there never was a "The". Only SWANS.

  • @tgcryder If you watch the cover with Gira's vocal, you'll see that they're called 'The Swans' there as well.

  • I've always loved this version. Beautifully sung lyrics complemented by the low key music makes this evoke the soul of the song. Ian would have been proud.

  • tears

  • The first time I heard her voice was Cattle Decapitation's "The Harvest Floor" where she lent her voice on the death-dirge and the title track. Her voice is beautiful and at the same time haunting. Look up "Regret and the Grave" if you like death metal, she has lent her voice on that as well.

  • one of the best bands there ever was...

  • This cover is incredible

  • It's great to hear her voice again after so long. It's probably been 12yrs.

  • Swans are so fly. They are awesome for making two covers.

  • I can only thank the heavens I got to see this band live, and thank Lor for bringing me to them!

  • I absolutely love you Jarboe!!!

  • she has incredibly beautiful voice

  • beautiful...

my favorite of the two covers,

    haunting indeed

  • thanks!

one of my favorite (pop) songs ever, singed by one my favorite female singer and joined by one of my favorite american songwriter....

  • It's strange...the Swans made two covers of this Joy Division song. Each is great in its own way. But I think this version is the more haunting of the two.

  • I think Gira agrees. He left his version off the Various Failures set.
