It's about a county sheriff who goes after the richest man in the county, who has committed murder and considers himself to be rich enough and powerful enough to get away with it.

Johnny is amazing in all respects but where you hear desperation in Springsteen's voice Johnny here sings it as a cheerful little uptempo song.

This version's more upbeat. At the end you almost think "maybe Johnny's gonna be alright after all."
