This music hugs my spirit and caresses my soul and lets me know everything is going to be ok. Intensely sorrowful but also full of love and happiness. It's impossible to explain.
Yeah, it' awesome! For the last 20 years I hear this as I'm cruising the reefs in the coral sea and other laid back dives! Paraplegic and enjoying cruising in my bed and I'm right back under the water.... now
One of my favorite pieces of music, ever. I saw this exact same lineup the following November in RI. To me, Wayne is the center of this. Jaco and Joe get a lot of notice and discussion, but Wayne is the solid center and grounding of the piece. Of course, you'd have to be a strong and confident man to be placed between the two huge egos on his left and right. Quiet and humble, Wayne just lets his his understated playing say all he needs to declare. You can damn sure hear some "church" in there.
Jaco smiles after 1:55 because he had just used false harmonics for a few notes there and nails them. He's giving Zawinul a "dig this sh-t" smile. It's not Jaco's routine way of playing that phrase, or at least it's not how he does it on 8:30. To me, it adds just a bit more breath and subtlety to those notes and expresses just that more feeling. It's a classic Jaco technical embellishment that was also so innovative at the time that it really does deserve a big ol' grin. Who luvs ya Jaco!
25 years from now some kid in music school will discover this and will be awed by the stunning beauty of this song and the talent of Wayne, Joe, Jaco & Peter. Can the same be said of "artists" like Lady Gaga?
@tripstar4000 I have to laugh. I agree with you, but it's pretty funny because almost every awesome video like this has some comment about the dislikes and often contemptuous references to Justin Bieber...not that he doesn't deserve it :-)
it makes me sad, that so many of the jazz purists, did not dig this stuff. that may have done a lot, to turn off a whole new generation, of potential jazz afficionados. these guys were amazing, man !
@independentjames1 nonsense! I'm sure you know PLENTY! :) Jaco was an incredible bassist, but just by playing, you are raising the bar for all music. As long as you love it, it doesn't matter how "good" you are - you are creating beauty. It doesn't get any better than that! :)
Oh how I hate puns. They are just to way cheap to my taste I guess. And they remind me of my father. He was really hot on cheap puns, before he finally left the house.

totally. you see the smile come directly out of the feeling that hit him when Joe snuck in that interval. so happy someone made videos like these and for the opp to see them -- beautiful stuff i missed at the time
Jaco has gone too soon... what a loss !! I will love him forever, nobody is like him . I hope somewhere he's jammin with Jimi. (Hendrix ,of course.). Can you imagine it? I wanna be dead !!!!!!!!
@djdjany Keith Moon on Drums, Janis Joplin on Vocals, Kurt Cobain Rhythm guitar and vocals............I died once, heard one track and made it back.........I wanna be dead again too.....
GREAT MUSIC.... from MASTERS.... when I watch this, ... I cant help but cry when I look at Jaco and think that someone beat him to death in an alley for stealing food, I consider him the greatest bass player off ALLTIME!
@longboarder1960 He didn't get beaten in an alley for stealing food. He got beaten to death in the street in front of a nightclub because he tried to get in and the bouncer refused to let him enter the club. The owner of the club came out and attacked Jaco slamming his head on the concrete causing major head trauma. He died ten days later.
Great version of great song. My man Jaco was really on that night, you can see it and feel it in his face as he grooves deeply to both the tune and his fellow musicians. All three are magnificent, Zawinul's remarkably fluid keyboard, and Shorter blows the hell out of his soulful sax. Man oh man this is good.
for the definitive lambasting of kenny g google pat metheny's comments on the jazzspoogmaster's "muisic minus one" recording of louis armstrong's "what a wonderful world. harsh words, but really a laff to read and i'd be going "ouch" if i was kenny g.
@SuperJerkyBoys I'll agree Lady GaGa is garbage but there are some artists from Hip-hop that know their music....
Artists like J Dilla,Pete Rock,Common,Outkast, hell even Lupe Fiasco sampled "Romantic Warrior" from Return to forever cats like that know music
But they don't get the radio play that the crappy rappers like Lil'Wayne get...it's so sad really...artists like Lil'Wayne represent a genre making it look bad then people who don't know the genre calls it garbage because of radio play.
simply amazing. I sat mesmerized, drifting back in time to when I saw these guys at the Hammersmith Odeon in London... 1978. I knew it was a special night, but I had no idea how special. This video is a taste of that evening.
I miss virtuoso musicians such as Zawinul and Pastorius. Brilliant musical ideas and total command of their instruments. There aren't many keyboard players with the command of so many sounds and musical ideas as Zawinul was able to create. It's a pity.
Hearing this, I'm 10 years old again (my brother who is 11 years older than I, introduced me to some great music when I was a kid). I'm hanging out by myself in my room, with the light s off and just lying there - listening to this. It was and still is my favorite weather report piece. I wonder if my brother understands how much he has influenced me...
A fellow soldier introduced me to Weather Report's music in 1986 while I was stationed in Russelsheim, Germany. I haven't been the same since... True Masters
This is a masterpiece. Few songs can reach into your soul and take you over like this one.
In defense of Shorter: at time mark 225 he takes control of the tempo single-handedly as a soloist while the rest of the band members respectfully wait. Brilliant use of improvised tempo change and allowing holes to not be filled. Sometime just playing a run of 16th note scales are not the answer.
I accidently discovered a cousin of Jaco who lives in Pennsylvania. I became aware of her maiden name (Pastorious) and jokingly asked her if she was related to the legendary bassist. It came as a big shock when she not only knew who I was talking about, but said YES! She did seem embarrassed to talk about it at great length. Apparently he was pretty wild and was a black sheep in the family. Still it made me feel a little closer to a true musical genius who came to a sad end.
@gigantorrrrrr What a cool story! I work in sales for a regional cable company and was working one day when I got a call from a woman who wanted to make some changes to an account. When I opened the account, the account holder's name was David Brubeck. I jokingly asked the woman "Is this THE Dave Brubeck, the jazz musician?" and she said YES! He's my father-in-law! I told her I've seen him a number of times at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island. We had a nice conversation.
@NJbakintheday That is also a cool story! Makes you feel somewhat closer to them that they really are human beings that have (some of) the same wants and needs as us (even cable service)! Don't know if your a fan of ELP, but as an example I found Keyboard Master Keith Emerson's channel where he has uploaded videos. One is really funny of him trying to light fireworks in the dark for his 66th birthday. You can hear him laughing and giggling with other family/friends in the background! Way Kool!
valvetrom, may be nobody's mentioning shorter, but i've always considered this whole song to be a tribute from mr. Z to him. can't imagine my life without these guys having existed.
@alanpbass I used to be an amateur bass player until I damaged A finger many years ago. I have never said Pastorius was a poor player. He plays the bass guitar as if it were lead guitar is all--not played as a bass. When he does play in more of a bass style he sometimes (often) crams more notes into a bar than are necessary. (lots of lead guitarists have the same fault!) Quantity does not necessarily equate to quality imo.
@tojaks oh my god man you are wrongs as hell. he covers the bass' rhythm duties to point that he made rhythms idiosyncratic to him. your not letting jaco talk to you man
@tojaks and dont says he doesnt support the chords cuz he is leading all the chord changes whenever he plays. they support his bass outines with chords.
tojaks, jaco was sometimes a little berserk and _definitely_ overplayed during the last few years, but check out
watch?v=V8ILmY5AfCo
and then see if you don't get the full riches that fucker put on this rock. some of the best pocket playing i've ever heard. and beyond. the band starts 2 minutes in, if you want to skip the intro.
I like how the bass sounds like. It' makes me think of someone who's crying or who is trying to tell us something ... The piano sounds like birdsong !
@tojaks Oh, bog off! A bassist is more than playing the root every four beats. Despite the conventional opinion that bass should be felt and not heard, it is an instrument in its own right, just as a trombone is completely separate to a cornet. This guy, along with the other greats, proved it to the uneducated.
@tojaks Dude, you are so wrong....Pastorius is the prime example of a bassplayer who creativly worked with and around the harmony without losing track of the rythm. It may not be your taste, but you argument falls flat. But if you are not impressed or it is simple not to you liking, why are you watching this vid and why do you feel the need to blurt out this kind of nonsense to people who do like it.
@tojaks are u a bass player? i dont even think you're a musician! that is so dumb that you say that! pastorius was the revolution and the innovation we wer waiting for. he is the guy that showed every bass player and every other musician how the bass should be played! pastorius is unique and if you listen to his work closely you will know wat i mean!
i dunno, but Kenny G kinda ruined me for life on anything that even remotely sounds like sax...sorry Wayne Shorter fans....it sounds too much like a chicken getting its' neck wrung out....now Jaco and his Fender bass...that's some smooth shit.
@jmillzz2 I think you are mistaken. Jaco would have played a higher note in the melody --harmonically like he does on the recording but he looks at Daryl as if to say "Nah,,....don't need it."
suddenly the acoustic in my room delivers a sweet smell. what happened. . .

Way Kool!

Should make a remark, how well Wayne Shorter plays,so modestly, nobody mentions him.
valvetrom 1 year ago
valvetrom, may be nobody's mentioning shorter, but i've always considered this whole song to be a tribute from mr. Z to him. can't imagine my life without these guys having existed.

i like it at 5:44 when jaco looks up when he plays
it's almost as if he's thinking of how he's going to become a legend

Those yawning bass chords are so haunting and Zawinul's solo has such warmth. One of the best ballads ever.

@JeffreyS821 Greatest fretless bass player in history, killed by some thug bouncer, while drunk @ a bar. What a F&@%ing waste.

(lots of lead guitarists have the same fault!) Quantity does not necessarily equate to quality imo.
tojaks 1 year ago
@tojaks oh my god man you are wrongs as hell. he covers the bass' rhythm duties to point that he made rhythms idiosyncratic to him. your not letting jaco talk to you man
GdupD666 1 year ago
@tojaks and dont says he doesnt support the chords cuz he is leading all the chord changes whenever he plays. they support his bass outines with chords.
GdupD666 1 year ago
tojaks, jaco was sometimes a little berserk and _definitely_ overplayed during the last few years, but check out
watch?v=V8ILmY5AfCo
and then see if you don't get the full riches that fucker put on this rock. some of the best pocket playing i've ever heard. and beyond. the band starts 2 minutes in, if you want to skip the intro.

I like how the bass sounds like. It' makes me think of someone who's crying or who is trying to tell us something ... The piano sounds like birdsong !

@SqeekyJojo (The rude person). John Giblin is a fretless bass player. Educate yourself!

Pastorius.....a low-register guitarist. Not a bass player at all
tojaks 1 year ago
@tojaks Oh, bog off! A bassist is more than playing the root every four beats. Despite the conventional opinion that bass should be felt and not heard, it is an instrument in its own right, just as a trombone is completely separate to a cornet. This guy, along with the other greats, proved it to the uneducated.
SqeekyJojo 1 year ago 14
