Outstanding. This is only the second song I've heard from her. I must admit that she has a sharp voice that takes some getting used to, but I think she will quickly become one of my favorites.
@opinioninflicting Saying she's better than Dylan is you opinion, as is that she's falling apart. She's had to make some changes but I don't believe she is any less of a musician.
@opinioninflicting You should never compare any 2 artists. They are individuals within themselves and should be treated as such. And individuals are set to change. As Joanna herself said, her music hasn't matured since Ys, it has been fully developed at each stage. Her voice has developed more, and she has gone through different things since then. I'm sure you are different to how you were 5 yrs ago as well. Does that mean you have also fallen apart?
@CantSeeTheStars Almost every titan of 60s music couldn't produce a profound piece of musical art or enduring pop single if their lives depended on it.
Most people "develop" out of genius pretty fast, and so has Joanna BTW, and it's sad as hell. This piece makes Beatles songs look bad--which no singer-songwriter of the 70s or 80s ever accomplished.

@UnnecassarilyGaming You are so right my friend.... it is likely that her anus will be sore for a while after this takes place but in the end we all love the feeling of slurpin' cockle into yo' but ho'
She's a fabulous, mysterious artist. That she is so beautiful is just unfair. Don't get me started on Andy Samburg. Ick. iwritehorror.blogspot(dot)com
@Buelligan88 I would hope you'd be able to look past her voice, which I find charmingly unique, and appreciate the beautiful lyrics and the simple but perfect instrumentals.
@CorporalHicks8 I wish the same for my sister. I showed this to her on the off chance she might dig it - giving the very mystical quality of Joanna's music. But, to no avail, my sister absolutely loathes her, and voices it every time I listen to Joanna lol Ah, can't win them all, huh :P

Why are all these critics praising a woman whose voice is so is so irritating that upon listening to it you would rather be at a three hour lecture on the biology of laughter taught by Fran Drescher? Why are all these critics praising songs over ten minutes filled with pedantic lyrics about nature and animals on top of monotonous harp twanging absent of any form of rhythm or melody? Pitchfork and their shit promoting juggernaut strikes again.
You think her voice is irritating, you think the lyrics are pedantic and you think her harp-palying is monotonous - many of us disagree. Why are you trying to dictate our tastes?
Oh and by the way, if you can't hear melody and rhythm, that's just your lack of knowledge about music theory. Not everything has to follow familiar - and overused - structures to be rhythmic and melodic.
@Btardforjustice Man, I loved J-New before I knew what pitchfork thought of her... I find her voice much more appealing than KE$HA's. And lyrically, I'll take metaphors to plants and animals over the word "blow" repeated profusely and suggestively. We get it KE$HA, you like cocaine, high energy clubs, and sucking the D, very witty use of the homophone, NOT.
wait, I like bjork, and i like joanna newsom. I think they would rock out together. You really can't say artists this different but of equally worthy talent are better or worse than each other. They are on par with each other.
Wow. You know, this isn't my absolute most favorite of her songs, but I just love the line "There are some mornings when the sky looks like a road." It just seems so perfect, and I haven't the slightest clue why. I think that's the allure of most of her work.
I don't know....what am I missing? Her singing and harp playing just about pluck my last good nerve. Many praise her lyrics but I'll be damned if I can understand her diction. But she seems to be doing well without me as a fan!
This song is about abortion? All her songs are about abortion except two she wrote about Napolean Dynamite---her favorite movie btw. Roadhouse is her second favorite.
who the fuck can say they play the harp and sound as awesome as joanna? seriously who plays the harp?? this woman is beyond amazing, she's outright enchanting
@Stirrethcharybdis LOL i meant no offense by it!! haha i'm just surprised at the fact that she plays such an archaic instrument and she sounds damned good, no one really does that on a celebrity status
This is the kind of music where you can just tell by the songwriting that the artist is a really wonderful person. I can't imagine a money grubbing, cynical artist creating this music.
Yes, "clam, *crap, cockle, cowrie" may affect the mood of the reader. As much as I love this song, and the unique mood always makes me tremble, that unexpected error in your lyric writing made me burst out laughing. Thank you for putting this up nevertheless.
:) love this song
