you can also do this through the GUI (graphic user interface) go to my computer, select drive/partition, alt click properties and tools. you have disk check, defrag and backup. easier than remebering syntax for the cmd line

Take it from another comp geek, chkdsk is a windows utility that is harmless and healthy for your comp. Just as someone said, if you (for example) power down with the power button, windows will ask you to check the disks when you bootup again. Thats the same thing. And wtf did that guy do to his comp that sound doesnt work? one word for him... n00b!

Haha, your funny, all he did was ChkDsk, thats a program that comes with windows and when you shut your computer down the wrong way, it auto-runs ChkDsk, This has NO effect on sound. Just for thinking that, That proves your so illetirate you may have just turned your speakers off and forgot how to turn them back on.

Great series of basic tips. Another way of speeding up an old computer would be to run a version of Linux such as Ubuntu rather than Windows. It's free, safe (no spyware or viruses) and is will make a previously sluggish computer run like one half it's age.

Run CMD

Type Services.msc

Disable the following services: Server Computer Browser Help and Support Services Error Reporting Services Themes (yuk)  System Restore Services

And set the size of the pagefile (My Computer / Properties / Performance) to twice the size of the machine's physical memory allowance.

And run without local admin rights.
