all good ideas for what could be in a new engine for half-life 3. However, there's one more possibility, and that could be a vectorized texture engine. It would be quite a jump to have all the textures in the game loaded from vector images instead of raster images, and it could be why valve is taking so long. But just imagine it - being able to look at a texture, and no matter how close you get, having it still look amazing...
Have any 1 thought a bout that Valve never make a 3rd game in any series. I mean there is more than 2 but not a single game has the letter ''3'' really. like Halflife 1 and 2. What I've noticed of the Half-Life franchise is that every new chronicle takes place in a different timeline. For instance: Half 1 took place during the 1990's. All the expansive packs took place around the same time. However, in HL2, it took place two decades later and the episodes where in the same year or so. If the next HL is an HL2 ep3, it will take place around the same year or so. if it is HL3... It means Gordon is in another era...BO
@LinkandMarioanNaruto Well if you payed attention you would realize that in HL the Gman took and froze Gordon Freeman then woke him up a couple decades later so therefore nothing is wrong there.
Remember Gordon has gone through a lot *SPOILER ALERT!* In HL2 when Gordon and Alyx go into the combine teleporter you are in there for 2 weeks so yea just remember he time travels a lot. Also HL3 or HL2 EP3 what ever it will be could leave off were EP2 left off then flying you to the Borealis.

I like the idea of deforming terrain, a lot. It reminds me of Battlefield BC:2, only that terrain is only so deforming Do you know of any games that have that sort of real-time rendering which you showcased with the R2-D2 model hitting the wood panels, or the gun hitting the door? Or are those examples things you rendered yourself? Either way, I love your videos on source SDK, they've helped me more than a number of times, and are always fun to watch.
@Dude5464673 I think that they realized that releasing episodes wasn't as brilliant as they first thought and after Ep2 they proceeded to work on a big sequel and possibly on a new engine too. The fact that they aren't giving us any information about it after this long pretty much confirms that the next HL isn't canceled and that they just want to keep the announcement a surprise. It's been four years since their last release so they are probably far into development at this point. E3 2012?
Actually, Valve created the Episodic system to take the place of Half Life 3, so we wouldn't have to wait so long (Oh, the irony...). So, when you think about it, Half Life 3 is already 2/3 out.

Portal 3 is a probably never going to be made seeing as how the first Portal left off on a cliffhanger and Portal 2 showed us what happened and concluded the story. Left 4 Dead 3 is a maybe for me. It might come out and it might not. Can't say for sure.
@GenerationMine Hm. L4D3 might be a while, as L4D2 is still pretty fresh. I doubt never for Portal 3, as it is Valve's little star. Eventually, they WILL continue the story. But that's what we said about HL3...

I had a weird dream tonight. The HL3 Beta release were available on steam for free and the singleplayer tasks sucked. Kill a dude, run to a point and the way where you go is shown to you, Like Call Of Juarez: The Cartel. Thats not a pun on the game. I actually cant wait for it.
@3kliksphilip Yes, when I first started playing HL2 in 2003, (when I was 12!) I was so amazed by the physics, the only thing that kept me always jumping.
The point is that if a game got good physics then it is considered a good game.
I think it's possible to make an engine capable of handling DMM with much objects at the same time. Just like that "Star Wars Soft Wood and Tough Wood" test. 8 years has passed and I'm 100% sure the average PC of nowadays can handle these new gravity vectors.
@BlackElite123 Where do you draw the line with destruction? If you could smash through walls, they'd have to have stuff on the other side for you to get to. What about if you mined under a house? Imagine the physics required to bring it down. Red faction has got nearest to this sort of level of physics, but they sacrificed building size and detail to get there. Plus it's a nightmare to try and optimise with destruction- the Source engine is very optimised the way it is. Though physics is GOOD.
@sweet0mistral I have indeed have played the beta leak from the russian source compiler can't remember his name. Also the trailer that time with the barrels dropping from the height was replayed over and over on the E3. Everybody was so excited for the retail version, weren't you? :)
@Grimdopple DMM is, though I believe that havok have their own version. Half Life 2 used havok. I think the same applies to quite a lot of these examples, plus Valve have the money behind them to make their own versions if they want to (Think faceposer for Half Life 2)
Little FAQ: Why not load breakpoints in-game when you break stuff? Well, when this happens then if you throw a grenade at a wall and more objects, the game can get an overflow or freeze when loading and visualizing physics and points together.
Also materials like wood need to be elastic to a certain degree. (Hooke's Law: Elasticity; to define elastic -> vector strength on objects). Just like as you add glass in hammer editor it would automatically break as glass. And wood would splinter.
@3kliksphilip So many people want to make Valve realize that DMM is a great feature that shouldn't be to expensive in processing. My idea to keep the process rate fast:
Model should not contain various extra models as pieces as done the way in func_physbox in hl2, which is expensive. Instead various break points is randomly placed on the models when the map loads, when you break it, it should snap with the break points. Just as linking info_nodes, points are linked too.
@BlackElite123 DMM is very intensive. I don't know if Valve are looking into it in great detail, but it's evident from the limited support for physics in HL2 that people enjoy messing about with them, and that they want more freedom to do these things. HL3's still a long way off.

@3kliksphilip Half life 1, was about the marines "containing" the science facility while the combine use the vortigard and other creatures from an alternate dimension to conquer the world and cause chaos. The were the combine. yes the script was half way re-written but the bones are the same.
the combine you see in Half-life2 are human augmented ones, and once they fully assimilate earth, they would of moved to the next dimension or universe.
@digimbyte My point is, they easily made the Half Life 2 script work with the Half Life 1 storyline, despite nobody really going 'omg HL1 has finished!!!! WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COMBINE?!??!'. They can just as easily make a script for HL3 that works with what's happened in the previous two games already. Plus didn't you defeat the big alien thing in HL1, hence saving the world anyway?

@ps3hater221 There wouldn't be much reason to. If the combine are beaten in episode 3, all that would remain would be the aliens scattered across the planet. The cities were made to protect the citizens from the aliens. So maybe Half-life 3 could have something to do with reclaiming the planet or something :3. I don't know why Gordon would go to the US, wouldn't have much significance to the story. And halflife took place mostly in eastern/northern Europe. Like estonia, finland, etc.
@liamjd1 I'm not so sure. They've made Portal, Left 4 Dead and are currently making a new Counter Strike, as well as a couple of episodes since Half Life 2. Instead of having just one successful series, they now have several. Doesn't look like they're in much of a hurry to make the next Half Life. (Which is just as well, since now the things in this video are more feasible!)
i had a tour of valve a few days ago, and... i saw some sweet stuff! A new combine prototype, new gordon weapons, new pictures as well... it was awesome!
@lightupmanproduction Look up 'GTC 2010 - Tesselation Lighthouse' on youtube. For in-game examples... well, since we still have the same consoles we did about 6 years ago, it's not really taken off. But Hydrophobia isn't too bad.

@BoxersUndies They say that it will happen, but have not said anything about it being in development, or actually being shown anywhere. It doesn't mean that the thing at e3 2011 was real. In fact, I reckon that Valve are busy developing CS:GO right now...
@tarrizzzzzzzzz I think the main problem is that hardware is capable of it, but consoles are the lowest common denominator, and we won't see it used in games until the consoles themselves are powerful enough. Give it until the next generation.

You were just pulling random things from the air when you made your post. Alienware does indeed have fast computers, but they're always overpriced. I'll ignore that for now, since I know what you're trying to suggest. It's just that you're wrong- the consoles are 5 year old technology. They're good for what they are... but are nothing compared to today's hardware.
@3kliksphilip alien ware is thouroly over priced, anyway, i was sort of assuming with the newer consoles, but I genually heard somewhere the gamecube had a 128-bit processor, so yes, I did assume the newer consoles were better...
@tarrizzzzzzzzz bit simply refers to the length of the data units. Graphics cards have had 128 / 256 for years, it really doesn't change much what so ever on the user's end. It is NOT a measurement of how fast the computer is. As far as I'm concerned, 64 bit simply means that I can use more than 4 GB of ram, and that I now have two 'Program File' folders. This generation of consoles have a custom-made processor, and their graphics cards are based on the Geforce 7000 / ATI X1000 series.
@3kliksphilip I read some more about it, and it appears you are right... though, why is it my 6gig ram, 2,7Ghz dual core computer with a decent graphics card can't run neither cod mw2 nor black ops without lagging? :(
@tarrizzzzzzzzz What's your graphics card and processor? What resolution do you have it set to? What are the graphics settings configured to?
Also, computers are at a bit of a disadvantage since they tend to run at a higher resolution than consoles. Apart from a handful of games, console games run at about 1280 x 720. Also, since most games are designed with consoles in mind, they are more optimised for their hardware configuration. If you'd like to know more, PM me and I'll send you some links

no they are really different from each other seeing how the spawns and number of infected change every play through and the specials are always spawning in different locations. so i do agree the bulk of the game.. the ambiance is the same but the game play in itself changes which changes your play style due to the enemies position. Death match is cute (cod) but l4d has more modes and if your adding mods to add to the games greatness than l4d has too many! you lose again

They are both good games and Valve is one of the best video game company's out there and I think we could agree on that but If there was a vote on which games was better it would be Half Life. L4D is already dead but HL2 Is already 7 years old and is not going to be dead for a long time. Best one wins and that wouldn't be you.

@BrokenShinChan Two multiplayer shooters, both very good. But I think that TF2 is probably better. CSS has bot support though, and since I've played it for so many years, I prefer mapping for it.

@Grimdopple DMM is, though I believe that havok have their own version. Half Life 2 used havok. I think the same applies to quite a lot of these examples, plus Valve have the money behind them to make their own versions if they want to (Think faceposer for Half Life 2)

Little FAQ: Why not load breakpoints in-game when you break stuff? Well, when this happens then if you throw a grenade at a wall and more objects, the game can get an overflow or freeze when loading and visualizing physics and points together.
Also materials like wood need to be elastic to a certain degree. (Hooke's Law: Elasticity; to define elastic -> vector strength on objects). Just like as you add glass in hammer editor it would automatically break as glass. And wood would splinter.

@3kliksphilip So many people want to make Valve realize that DMM is a great feature that shouldn't be to expensive in processing. My idea to keep the process rate fast:
Model should not contain various extra models as pieces as done the way in func_physbox in hl2, which is expensive. Instead various break points is randomly placed on the models when the map loads, when you break it, it should snap with the break points. Just as linking info_nodes, points are linked too.

@BlackElite123 DMM is very intensive. I don't know if Valve are looking into it in great detail, but it's evident from the limited support for physics in HL2 that people enjoy messing about with them, and that they want more freedom to do these things. HL3's still a long way off.

@3kliksphilip Half life 1, was about the marines "containing" the science facility while the combine use the vortigard and other creatures from an alternate dimension to conquer the world and cause chaos. The were the combine. yes the script was half way re-written but the bones are the same.
the combine you see in Half-life2 are human augmented ones, and once they fully assimilate earth, they would of moved to the next dimension or universe.

@digimbyte My point is, they easily made the Half Life 2 script work with the Half Life 1 storyline, despite nobody really going 'omg HL1 has finished!!!! WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COMBINE?!??!'. They can just as easily make a script for HL3 that works with what's happened in the previous two games already. Plus didn't you defeat the big alien thing in HL1, hence saving the world anyway?

@ps3hater221 There wouldn't be much reason to. If the combine are beaten in episode 3, all that would remain would be the aliens scattered across the planet. The cities were made to protect the citizens from the aliens. So maybe Half-life 3 could have something to do with reclaiming the planet or something :3. I don't know why Gordon would go to the US, wouldn't have much significance to the story. And halflife took place mostly in eastern/northern Europe. Like estonia, finland, etc.

@liamjd1 I'm not so sure. They've made Portal, Left 4 Dead and are currently making a new Counter Strike, as well as a couple of episodes since Half Life 2. Instead of having just one successful series, they now have several. Doesn't look like they're in much of a hurry to make the next Half Life. (Which is just as well, since now the things in this video are more feasible!)

You were just pulling random things from the air when you made your post. Alienware does indeed have fast computers, but they're always overpriced. I'll ignore that for now, since I know what you're trying to suggest. It's just that you're wrong- the consoles are 5 year old technology. They're good for what they are... but are nothing compared to today's hardware.

@tarrizzzzzzzzz bit simply refers to the length of the data units. Graphics cards have had 128 / 256 for years, it really doesn't change much what so ever on the user's end. It is NOT a measurement of how fast the computer is. As far as I'm concerned, 64 bit simply means that I can use more than 4 GB of ram, and that I now have two 'Program File' folders. This generation of consoles have a custom-made processor, and their graphics cards are based on the Geforce 7000 / ATI X1000 series.

@tarrizzzzzzzzz What's your graphics card and processor? What resolution do you have it set to? What are the graphics settings configured to?
Also, computers are at a bit of a disadvantage since they tend to run at a higher resolution than consoles. Apart from a handful of games, console games run at about 1280 x 720. Also, since most games are designed with consoles in mind, they are more optimised for their hardware configuration. If you'd like to know more, PM me and I'll send you some links

no they are really different from each other seeing how the spawns and number of infected change every play through and the specials are always spawning in different locations. so i do agree the bulk of the game.. the ambiance is the same but the game play in itself changes which changes your play style due to the enemies position. Death match is cute (cod) but l4d has more modes and if your adding mods to add to the games greatness than l4d has too many! you lose again
