  • If I remember correctly (it was a long time ago), the 1979 Cebu tournament was scored on how many hits you made rather than on the quaility of those hits. That encouraged speed over power. However, I can tell you from personal experience that Tom was very capable of hitting very hard when he wanted to. In our own Pekiti tournaments in the US back then, we used kendo headgear and used to bend the front bars on the mask and bloody the head through the side padding.
