More of a homage, I think. Basing solos or entire charts off of classical music excerpts was pretty common. It wasn't so much using a successful bit to be successful as using something the audience was probably familiar with, just as Tchaikovsky used popular folk songs in some of his works.
@Amandacelkins I wonder how he would feel about his songs being used in crappy commercials? And what tune is this stolen from? Iam almost positive Tchaikovsky had nothing to do with this song.
