It seems to me Lendl had more self confidence than in 1984, while McEnroe almost the opposite. I think that between Ivan and John, at least till 1985, psychological factor had allways been determinant.
mcenroe looked SPENT from the 1st pt of the match - lendl, fresh as a daisy
mac had just played a marathon match against wilander the day b4, while lendl was well-rested after cruising past a washed-up connors (just like at the french)
in '84 they BOTH played a long semifinal -
mac said b4 the '84 match he saw lendl in the locker room and lendl couldnt even touch his toes, which gave mac a jolt of confidence
im sure the same thing hap with lendl in '85 after his easy semi
this match turned out to be pivotal in '80s men's tennis
b4 '83 lendl beat mac many consecutive times, then mac raised his game and won many consecutive times... but after this match, lendl knew what he had to do to beat mac & mac didnt have the answers (changes in his personal life/confidence/focus contributed to the drop in his game... not to mention his disastrous sabatical that destroyed his game forever)
the opposite hap to lendl after this match - his confidence/game shot to the moon
R F N S First of all, this was an incredible win for Ivan Lendl and lead to his rise in the game. He turned out to be on of the greatest Tennis players of all time.
I think this is similiar with what happened to Bjorn Borg when John McEnroe came on the scene. I think Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe both got burned out by then. Bjorn eventuallly quit the game while John also kept going away from the game little by little. Probably both were burned out
MCENROE SURE TOOK A LONG TIME TO REACH THE NET TO SHAKE LENDL'S HAND

Having Tony Roche as coach is key. Roche coached Kevin Curren who beat McEnroe and Connors in straight sets in the 1985 Wimbledon.

The commentators really sounded like they didn't care for Lendl winning

so what is your reasoning behind Mcenroe's 10+ consecutive losses to Lendl after this match?
