voltron 3D was awesome and i hope they dont screw up the live action movie, i own all of vehicle and lion voltron on dvd and vhs both in their original releases, the vehicle series though got ignored when fleet of doom was released, but i own the toys and play with them alot still against my transformers combiners
I think that 4 mayor reasons they decide to completely change the story (I think was a bad idea btw) are:
1)Lack of good translation
2)Copyright issues
3)Try to avoid mature and inapropiate situations presented in some episodes like killing, and sexual content "not recomended" for younger viewers on that time (in the U.S.).
4)Runing against production time (is easier to change the whole story and simplify it than try to re arrange the original).
I don't quite understand why the there is a demand to change up things when it comes to bringing a property to the US Marked. I'm not talking about editing out violence and death, I'm talking about completely restructuring storys, to splice together several animes to one like dr. frankenstein and then sell it to several other markets in the world. I'm sure kids can still relate to the storys and characters that were shown in japan.
A good story is a good story no matter where you live.
I think they have improved with this in recent years at least with the teen anime. I've never seen Pokemon in Japanese so I'm not sure about the kids shows.
Hmmm I have heard there have been some edits and dialogue and even plot changes (to maintain the rating), but I don't know anything for sure.
But yeah it has gotten way better. Especially since DVDs.
But hey, in some countries even Disney Animated flicks get cencored or edited to maintain a certain rating. The German edition of Tarzan and Lili&Stitch comes to mind =/
@Neoguest maybe i'm a purist here, but i doubt that by making up a story as well as mashing some properties together, like a child with a box of random action figures, has improved anything.
Or would you say those Godfrey Ho pictures were decend?
BTW @WorldEvents it confuses and infuriates me that a video that once was globally accesible, and is obviously ment for education, is now region protected.
What about Robotech, though not done by World Events, It had combine three un related anime into one, it wasn't made for a kids, it was made for teen and adult as well, look how it had turn out. Let not for get about Samurai Pizzia Cats, not a true dub to Teyandee, but a funny comdey.
@marvelmania anime wasn't very marketing at the time in 1984. The original story might had been confusing. Golion and Dairugger XV did had similar animation which is why they made them related each other. I don't even care about had they handle the two anime. Voltron did got me interested on the original, like Power Rangers had gotten me interest in super sentai.
i am sorry but they did not made it, they just bought the rights to have it shown in America and other parts of the world, these animations were created by Japanese animators, just like transformers and the G.I Joe and also astroboy, most of these are from TOEI animation
I remember the toy, the cartoon would have flashing parts on the robots that would interact with the toy and you could shoot at the flashing parts on the TV. I had one of these but got boring real quick.
I remember having the Lion Voltron and my brother crying over having the vehicle version. I don't remember anyone that liked the Vehicle version. I don't remember anyone that liked Denver either. It was too cheesy for me at that time.
It's funny how in Saber Rider the US dub of Bismark, they made the British member the main character instead of the Japanese while they could've chosen the American member since he had a rivalry with a major and the coolest villain of the show .
I have vehicle force voltron the original toy and will be doing a toy review of him soon, what people dont realise is that the Voltron movie is going to be huge and just as big if not bigger than transformers.
I'm right with ya, friend. I love the English dub of the lion force, but I'm also gonna order the King of Hundred Beasts: GoLion and also Vehicale Voltron (real Japanese name Dairugger) sets. I'm a big fan of both dubs and of the Voltron universe (though English-language Voltron is my favourite, of course).
I agree! If you import the colour'd sets from my Region zone, they make mention of the movie on some of the special features and I also can't wait! I'm gonna see it twice to support it.
I so agree. :D Over here in North America, with the release of the Region-1 boxsets, they have sold well and it is also on The Cartoon Network syndicated again (the last time was in the late '90s with Toonami).
I'm also enjoyin' talking to another very kind Aussie about Voltron. I am glad your great nation has such great taste in anime. :D
To quote Koran from the Ghost and Four Keys episode, "Voltron shall LIVE AGAIN!" ...
damn i just bought lion force voltron and realised its the 6 inch one :-( , oh well i will keep hunting around to get the 15" inch to suit my vehicle force - hey did you know there was a voltron anime movie ! oh yeah its in this video i forgot ! its like transformers how they made a movie in 86 .
Yeah I have it. It's finally on Region-1. It's called the Voltorn: Floot of Doom movie, and it's a must own for any fan of the two Voltron's. :D
good luck on that over 15" Voltron. I'm still sadly Voltron-toyless as of now. :( I do eventually wanna get some stuff to pose next to my media shelves with my Voltron boxsets, and also some more Gen-1 Transformers. Peace ...
LOL, "Ramrod Equalizer Unit"! Sounds like something a male pr0n actor would co-opt as a name for his, um, unit.

kobewild1 1 year ago
Based on a letter I received from Marc Handler, one of the writers for Voltron, the edits and changes were primarily for the following reasons:
1) violence (all those robeasts and robot men? Yeah, in GoLion and DXV they were living beings)
2) sexual content (like one episode of DXV were a nude painting on a wall is edited out)
3) graveyard / mourning / honoring ancestors - while very important in Japan, these scenes do not resonate with American children / American audiences

BTW this is not intended to be flaming hate. I just don't get it. Redubs would have been just fine and more cost effective.

That (edition/music) is a big effort, cant deny that, but still the original art, desing and history were japanese.

Anyone remember the LJN version of Voltron, with MASSIVE cockpits, cheap plastic and fixed legs?
I liked the robots in Saber Rider, but the show was like the poor man's Galaxy Rangers of the time.
It's over-Americanization ruined it's chances of popularity.
...Does the guy talking about his childhood in this like EVERYTHING?...
Never liked 3rd dimension. The toys started to look like kids designed them (VOLTREX?), stories were AWFUL.
And Hagar was BAD again? She turned good at end of old one!?!

Yup I remeber the LJN version, it sucked.

I wonder if Voltron/Golion is much popular in Japane as it is here

Its how the old saying goes: Big things come in small packages
The meaning: World Events Production was a small time studio, but they gave us the phenomenon known as VOLTRON
