Thanks!!! I got the whole coconut open, broken into pieces and all the fruit out, and put it in the blender with the water, I'm gonna blend it up and make coco milk!
@nicedayvince PS- I found that the flexible knife didn't work for me, instead my dad showed me how to use a really strong butter knife and place the shell down on a cutting board and then pry the fruit out from around the edges starting at the points.
or you can hold the coconut while trying to attack it with a hatchett (I DO NOT recommend this... nearly got my hand). Managed to open it but this looks way easier.
I was watching Sherlock Holmes after months of wanting to and when I get to watch it, halfway through I'm wondering how to crack a coconut properly other than bashing it with a hammer
I would never do what he's doing. After draining the water out, put the coconut in 2 plastic bags. Line a bed with a plastic sheet. Blugeon the coconut in the bags with a hammer on the sheet until it smashes into pieces. Most times the meat of it will fly off the shell. The mess is contained in the plastic bags. Done.
It actually worked for me! I hit it a couple times along the groove and it cracked in half almost completely. Only problem was the coconut inside was bad :-( I'm gonna get another coconut this weekend.
One little tidbit of information that he skips right over without saying is that he's hitting that thing with the back of the knife, not the blade. Seems like more pertinent information than water vs. milk.
So basically you need an expensive butchers knife to make the process less tedious. I have one just sitting in my fridge that I'll never get open unless I go out and buy a hammer or something.
@PsychedbE actually, that's a cleaver. butcher's knives have smaller blades which are good as disjointing poultry, etc. they don't cut through bone well, only the joints. that guy's cleaver has a weighted blade which makes it possible to chop through bone, or coconut
bought a coconut today and looked up how to open one. this is an awesome video. made it real easy. Waaaaay better than dad's way of going at it with a hammer and loosing most of the water in the process.

I'm whacking away at it with the back side of my heavy chef knife and nothing is happening. Isn't there like, some kind of sweet spot where the crack starts to form? This video skips that entirely.

The idea that cocunuts kill 15 times more people than sharks started wih a study by Dr Peter Barss. He stated that in four years only five people were killed by coconuts. The research got misread to become 150.
Note that he's using the blunt edge of the cleaver in the video. This would prevent damaging the cutting edge of the cleaver as well as make the procedure a lot less dangerous.
first, take a oversized hammer and coconut in the garden, smack the coconut way to hard so it breaks down the middle in 1 blow, then put the tip of a knife between the shell and meat to loosen it up do this all around the half now insert the knife again and wiggle the meat out, works great.
If there's the outside of the coconut (the brown stuff) in your drink (I mean a lot of it, about 25% of your water) and some brown outside powder in the meat, is it still good?
Neither me or my husband got it in one whack, but I continuously chopped at it and it finally cracked opened. It wasn't hard nor exhausting- thanks for the video :)
Anyone who has seen a walnut tree will know that a walnut is a fruit also. The seed is the nut--the same way a coconut is surrounded by fruit before it is the round hairy thing that we mostly recognize. By the way, the peach is related to the almond. (The almond is also the seed of a fruit.) If you crack open the peach pit, the seed will look like an almond.
I think your right about the walnut. I'ts surrounded with green fruit meat that leaves yellow/brown stains on your skin when you peel it, but you can't eat it.
wow! cool! i used to hammer one of the 3 holes and drink the water from the hole. After that i wrap the nut a newspaper and a plastic bag and I throw it on the window :)) Its not very fast but it's fun xD
Worked perfectly. Was afraid I might need more force and it would be too loud but that wasn't the case. His way definately works better than survivormans, cause I tried that out and got frustrated.

also about the comment at the end of the video saying coconut saturated fat is good because its not animal saturated fat is off
coconut and animal saturated fat are both good for you the whole saturated fat being bad for you has been a lie
people who eat diets with loads of saturated fats like say eskimos have 0% heart disases 0% obesity 0% type 2 diabetes
while 1 in 2 amaricans who eat low saturated fat diets will have or die from a heart attack
