i was privileged to be able to hear Gilels play this sonata when he came to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles....honestly, his performance that night trumped this one...in his expert hands, the primary theme became increasingly intense and agitated until everything exploded in the coda! every note was so well articulated that it seemed each finger had a separate brain....
TV-translation from Moscow Conservatory 27.12.1977, just the final of Sonata No 3, made me a lifelong fan of Chopin. It was a great emotional shock, purification and rebirth for the Light.
each of his notes was so bright and clean, in every piece he played, i love that. his way of playing chords is astonishing, just like richter's one.. neuhaus' influence?

it doesnt sound like chopin,a bit too slow.his technique is qualified more for prokofieff or rachmaninoff.actually gilels´ chopin seems too heavy and not elegant enough.particularly the fast parts could be played more in a virtuoso manner, too static in dynamics i think.
Che splendore

It is good to know that Gilels was Rubinstein's favourite pianist... :)

Umm Giles' Chopin is just as good as Rubinstein's...

lol at your comment... Gilels was Rubinstein's inferior in one thing only - popularity, esp with Americans

What a great Artist he was... unique! And, the older he grew the better he played...
