holy crap! that thing sounds amazing! i have a vtm 120. and i really want an old butcher. now i want to find one of these too! great playing by the way. great video overall! i love when people play their amps the way they are supposed to be played! haha
2 People dislike that Peavey is better than Marshal. Can't wait to get mine in a few days. Been wanting one for so long, never get the money in time to bid.
This thing takes some time to set up but sounds awesome when dialed in. I put some better tubes in and use the high gain input and high volt output to boost my tube power amp and it makes all the difference.
Hey I just bought one of these rockmaster preamps and i'm having trouble dialing in a good tone. I opened it up and the tubes are labelled "China" on them and I can't see much else on them. I'm getting a really fizzy tone which is there even with the gain on 1 in the ultra channel. Any suggestions on tube choices? What type were the originals? Btw i'm running a Peavey classic 50/50 power amp with it. I'm kind of new to tube gear and I just got the p amp last month.
@Guitarsoloist1: First try running the rockmaster through another amp to make sure the problem is in the preamp and not the power amp. Then you can try swapping the Rockmaster tubes out with a spare 12AX7. It can be any old tube, you're just trying to find if one of the existing tubes is bad. If one is, and you swap in a good tube, you should hear your problem go away. And make sure all your connections (cables and jacks) are good. Good luck.
Thanks for the info. I actually spent half a day swapping tubes trying to get the perfect tone out of it. I ended up with a 12AT7 tube in the #1 spot which from the schematic looked like the clean channel and another 12AT7 in the #4 spot which I think all the channels run through after their initial tube. The #4 was an old telefunken tube I luckily found and it made such a great difference. The tone became so much brighter and clearer overall.
The gain is still off the scale in the crunch and ultra channel although there is such better clarity now. For anyone that wants a crystal clean tone out of their clean channel I would recommend a 12AT7 in the first position.
i need a preamp for studio recording...and im wondering if i can use this preamp plugged directly to my firewire card and then add maybe a impulse-based cab simulator
YES in fact I actually came across a clip done with it and cab impulses on a forum the other day and it sounded extremely pro. I think it was on 7stringforum but I'm not sure, sorry!
cool ive heard it doesnt have enought power to use it directly thats why they use a power section...im new at tube amps XD...anyway the mesa studio preamp and this are out of production dunno if its a wise decision to take one...if it brokes im fucked :S...on the other hand the new one costs like 2000$ -.-
You don't need "power"/a power amp to do direct recording, preamps/pedals/etc only put out a weak signal. If you want to hear it through a cab you need a poweramp to amplify it.
Check ebay. Look for the rocktron piranha too, I'm also considering that one.
okay, what is a preamp? is it basically an amp? or do need something else to run it through? i have a marshall jcm 900 head and 4x12 cab. would a preamp be of any use to me? do you run it through the effects loop? does it have effects? does it add gain?
In an amp the preamp is responsible for the main sound character, it adds the gain, the distortion. The poweramp is responsible for amplifying the sound the preamp makes. Basically an amp works like this. Your amp also has a preamp stage and a poweramp stage. If you get this preamp you can plug it into your JCM900's return, this way you can combine the Peavey preamp and the Marshall's poweramp. I hope i explained it understandable
Run your guitar into the rockmaster then the rockmaster out into the JCM 900 effects loop return. Only the volume on your JCM with work like this and you dial in the tone with the rockmaster only. Put the rockmaster volume around 4 and set your JCM volume how you like.
I got the link but am having trouble registering. How can I get in touch with the guy? Are you already in the site? I can see your link, but can't communicate with the guy. Any ideas how I can get to him?
If you can get some of the original Peavey 12AX7's that came in the Rockmaster's they often sound better than just about anything you can buy. I changed mine out for Groove Tubes and ended up putting the Peavey V1 back in there to get the right gain and sound. Tone prblems may also stem from what you are using for a power amp. I am using the Classic 50/50 with EL84's and it has never let me down. You shouldn't have to play with these that much to get a great sound.
I just got a rockmaster and it sounds like garbage. I am shocked considering all that i've heard about it. Even my cheap ass Digitech Twin Tube sounds better, just not as much gain.
What tubes you using? Are you scooping out your mids or doing any funny EQ work?
If you can't get good Classic Rock/Metal tone from a Peavey Rock Master, then something is wrong, either with your guitar, the rest of your gear, or with You...
Thirdgen, thats a rather inflamatory statement, I'll choose to ignore it.
I actually like the JJ's on the clean channel. I am using a whole box full of tungsols, EHXs, and JJs for crafting various sounds. But yes there were non tube issues with the unit that have been resolved.
And I am using an EQ to lightly cut some annoying freqs, it turns the unit into a 9.5 out of 10 with a good EQ. Otherwise it's a solid 7.
So trust me it's not gear, guitar or listener. Every ear is different.
It's not "inflamatory" at all, it's a FACT, and a lot of other people are aware of it as well. JJs are NOT as good (OR as desirable) as the original Tesla tubes. Many people have installed JJs, and their sound turned to $#!t. JJ preamp tubes are Notorious for being microphonic...
Are you on the low or high gain input? And what's on the voicing setting section, the fontion. I have seen bottom on a pic but not the other one. Thanks!
I just got my rockmaster and love the tone, what will new tubes do for my sound. I read some good things about thr Eclctro-Harmonics also the tung-sol 12ax7's Did you replace all your tubes? Do these preamps have 4 12ax7's? Do you just take the top off to get to the tubes?
Excellent playing and AWESOME tone. I love my Peavey Rock Master (I wish Peavey would bring it back). it sounds somewhere between a Marshall and a Mesa, which I think is a nice blend...
Well, I KNOW what I am talking about. I had a Marshall for 14 years. I compared the two, and I know what a Mesa sounds like. It sounds nothing like a "combo amp". I'm running it through a tube power-amp and a 4x12 cabinet. HOW do you figure that could sound like a "combo"??...
Good playing. I used to have a Rockmaster. I don't know why I sold it. But I am happy with the rig I have now, have you ever played through an Aphex Aural Exciter Type C2 with Big Bottom? Every guitar player needs one of these things. Blows BBE crap out of the water. I would thgink that if you put one in your loop it would take your Rockmaster to new heights.
