I only recently discovered the Paul Simon officially released "Hearts and Bones" cd and I love it...knowing its history - that it was originally a Simon/Garfulkel reunion cd with Arts vocals erased.. Listening to the tracks I can get here on youtube...I have to say that there is a less produced more laid back and enjoyable vibe on the S&G version.
Heart's and Bones would have been a great as a Simon and Garfunkel album! That said at the time it would have been released I don't think it would have been accepted. The songs are good but I agree that they are not "commercial". Whatever "commercial" is ;-)
Has anybody here seen any video from this tour? I would love (LOVE) to see even the smallest bit of that--Hearts And Bones Tour--the band w/ Dave Weckl on drums, Anthony Jackson ob bass, Sid McGuinness on guitar, etc... I believe it '83.

Wow, what a treat! Thank you for posting!! I'm a big S&G fan and have never heard this one! I wish they stayed together for at least a couple more albums..
As good as Paul Simon is, believe me I think he is the best songwriter we've got, he is an amazing guitarist, and his vocals are much more than adequate, regardless, adding Art Garfunkel to the mix is not akin to subtraction by addition! I loved "Hearts And Bones" and "Song About The Moon" was always my fave! "If you want to write a song about the moon, walk around the craters of the afternoon, when the shadows are deep and the light is alien and gravity leaps like a knife from the pavement". A+
wow.....I'd heard about this when the album came out and some crazy rumours about how Simon was upset that Garfunkle wouldn't quit smoking for the album or tour. Anyway...so what! If they'd released this album as a duo, then it would 've got the exposure that it deserves. This and One Trick Pony. Possibly most underate of his albums....Thanks for posting it. I love that garfunkle solo vocal.....wow....
This is so heartwarming to hear both of them on this song. I love love love Hearts and Bones-- and now I love it more! Please consider posting all of the tracks! Thanks for a wonderful channel!!!
yea art might well have made it on the merit of the sheer physical talent of his voice but he needed the right song writer... someone like paul. paul was a creative genius but started without much stage presence, and i suppose it was reassuring to have one of best tenors on the pop-folk scene as your personal collaborator and friend. these arguments are like "did Sting need The Police?" or "did Ray Davies need The Kinks?" arguments. it was a moment, and the moment passed -- no one lives forever
Thanks for this, it is great. I love the warmth of vinyl. Paul Simon is the greatest musical genius of the last 60 years. So for my money he is entitled to have an ego.
This version is a squillion times better with Art on it, but Simon couldn't bear that fact so he removed Arts vocals. He prefered to release a crap solo album and pander to his pride. He destested the fact that without Arts voice, Paul Simon would have remained anoymous. But our pride/vanity always rules the day. The price for this vanity is all the amazing songs he might have written and sung with Art - but never did. At least he got to be "right". Good for him!
Simon and Garfunkel were great, unique. But Paul Simon can get along very well without Artie. . Anyway I don't consider "Heart & Bones" just a crap solo album, I think, on the contrary, that is a wonderful album, it was a flop, but only commercialy.
I agree with your first statement - Art at 2:10 makes the take for me. But come on, all the amazing songs he "might" have written? What about Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints? To me that was his best work to date, musically, lyrically and spiritually
I can't say either way on that, as it goes from one song to another, but along those lines, I submit that the creative tension that divided them, was crucial to the completeness of their music, as it was with Dennis DeYoung vs. James Young/Tommy Shaw of Styx, as with Paul McCartney vs. John Lennon/George Harrison of the Beatles. I find this concept fascinatingly ironic.
Thank you so much for this! This past week I've been listening to the hearts and bones album in the car...and of course it all came back to me slowly as it's the sort of album you've got to listen to several times. This is wonderful to hear these renditions, thank you!
Thx 2dannyc89 for sharing these great rare clips ... I am a great fan of Paul Simon and especially of Simon & Garfunkel .
But although it´s sad that the didn´t record these finally togehter ;
If they did it, it would be the weakest album the had made ... in my opinion nothing the made togehter or alone can beat there last 2 albums togehter ...
Would have been nice if the sound wasn't as rough, but I could care less. This song has the Simon and Garfunkel spirit. If only Paul's songwriting wasn't in the gutter as it KINDA was at the time and these two didn't have that one unfortunate disagreement, they could have made a great album
Songwriting in the gutter on 'Hearts and Bones'? Surely not! Wasn't 'Renee and Georgette Magritte and their dog after the war' on this album? I think that's one of Paul's best solo songs. It works on so many levels.
I just listened to it again. That really is Art's voice. I can't believe it. That's an ultra, ultra rare find since Paul dumped Art's vocals. I'm blown away!
I have the entire "dumped" album, All of the album was recorded, then dumped, but not many people know that some copies got out. I also posted "Cars are Cars" from the dumped album, Check it out. It is in better quality.
Will you post the entire album? I don't care if some songs are unfinished. I am a Paul Simon nut. This is great. Personally I think the solo version of Moon is better but the S & G version of cars is much better. Just my opinion.
I think that this song and mabye one other are the only ones that Artie sang on. The rest of the album was virtually identical to what was accually released as Hearts and Bones
@hammerofharpel: You've been missing out on a lot. This album - dumped as it is - has been going around in bootleg circles for years. It was definitely announced - and meant - as a "Simon & Garfunkel album". I even own a book from 1984 that prematurely and erroneously wrote that the album had already been released and had been a 'come-back' for the duo.
On the bootleg album, most of the songs are mixed in a different way than we know them, and only some have Arties vocal added. Still a gem!
@hminkema - as have I apparently. Everybody keeps saying how they don't understand where all the good music went. It's still here, but it's all about money and promotion now. I'm a great Paul Simon fan and H&B is one of the best albums he's ever made. Love to get my hands on the complete S&G mix. This is the first I've heard of it! Thanks for posting this 2dannyc89!!
I think that a good deal of the songs that made it onto Hearts And Bones were good and would have been great as S@G songs, but not all of 'em. And really, despite the personal and revealing lyrics and the gorgeous sound, it still wouldn't have been that great. It's more about Paul's life at the time. Art didn't exactly fit it with most of the tunes. Just my opinion
That's how Paul felt as well. He said in an interview that they were his songs and he felt threatened by having Art do the vocals. In addition he was exhausted and stated that he had little energy to do the album. Art said that in one day Paul said to come to his wedding and he decided to take Art's vocals off the album.

Just get a copy of one of their concerts, you'll find a lot of songs that never were
officially recorded but it's official enough for me.
