lithops can be grown by beginners very easily - i got high quality seeds of lithops from a small nursery from Berlin-Bohnsdorf/Germany (google for "lithops Berlin-Bohnsdorf")....
I grow all my mesembs in a mixture of good garden soil (a sandy loam) mixed with coarse sand. I mix it until it 'looks' right, roughly evenly proportioned, or sometimes a bit more sand. I have found that paying attention to watering in conjunction with the plant's life cycle is more important than soil type.
Actually, the inspiration came from having seen many similar things from as far back as I can remember. When I realized I had the ability to do it myself, I picked a plant which I could easily predict the flowering time.
I'll admit Private Life of Plants has the most spectacular timelapse I've ever seen (though I thought some of the sound effects they added were a bit over-the-top). The conophytum sequence was especially good, going from dormant to flowering (I'm not so patient).
nice! =P, much better then the "Lithops capsule" vid by kosmosTB cuz that one's really boring -.- lol =P
