Nice jump. Pilot chute wrapped around the wrist sucks. Did that once in a normal skydive and almost went in with it. Pointing up to the sky got it away though and life is good. We have a guy we call Spike who jumps from tandem gliders at altitudes of like 700 feet with a B.A.S.E rig... He shows up in Utah a lot.
Thanks for the comment. In retrospect, a BASE rig would have been a really good idea on this jump as I didn't end up in the saddle until around 1000 feet.
Well at least you waited till your chute opened to scream like a girl, j/k.
I've taken thermals up over 10,000' hang gliding, looks as if you could've used some thermic activity that day(weather doesnt ever cooperates, does it?)and got a couple thousand extra feet.
I have seen this done before, at Mt Hull in CA, launch is ~4,000' above the nearby landing area(a few miles away). You can get over the LZ with about ~3,000' of altitude, nearly 60% more altitude than you had.
Yeah - we had hoped to be up at least 2500-3000 for the cut away. I had intended to ride the hang glider down if we were under 2000, but I changed the rules on the fly. That was a dumb idea but fortunately I didn't win a Darwin Award.
Thanks so much for stopping by to leave a comment!
Nice one mate from Dan (paraglider pilot and ex-skydiver in UK). Moments like that are what makes life worth living. But yes, use a base rig next time! Love the scream best I've ever heard! Congrats.
Thanks Dan! My friend made fun of my shrill girlie scream, and so I tried running it through various sound editors to make it sound more masculine, but eventually gave up!
Tell me about it! I left the hang glider at about 1900 feet with a standard parachute/pilot chute and a roll in the nose to snivel my usual hard opening. I was in the saddle at about 900-1000 feet. I should have aborted the jump and gotten towed to altitude or used a base rig.
Do you mean the slider? After the parachute opens, I reach up and pull two cords down on the slider. The slider is an opening break to prevent hard openings. You can continue to fly the parachute with an open slider, but collapsing it with the pull cords after opening slighly improves parachute performance.
Dude - I opened at 1000 feet and if you watch the video frame-by-frame I had the pilot chute under my arm. I can't help it that I shrieked like a girl!
Cool video! What is the minimum altitude when you can still use a parachute on hang glider?

nice work mate ...think u should of went a bit higher but then again holding onto the pilot chute with the freefall is a feat in itself
