this was one of my fathers first records, when i was 14 he discovered the magic of youtube and show this to me its been 3 years and i am still hoooked!
I love Danny Kaye, when I was younger I told me parents I wanted to marry him. He had so much talent that makes me laugh and cry. RIP: Danny Kaye, love you forever!
I saw this a couple of days ago in my Language arts class. This is my favorite part of the movie. I looked like such an idiot cause I was laughing SO loud and hard. I wan't to see if myy drama teacher could play this for class cause this guy is and AMAZING actor.
I love classic movies like this as the humor was a lot cleaner than it is today and they don't make movies like this anymore. I especially adore Danny Kaye--he was a true comedian artist.
I love this guy, I must admit I am curious...I've always wondered how many takes this took him to do and not crack up or get tounge tied, or both, lol
Danny Kaye was NOT gay...he was married to Sylvia Fine Kaye, who wrote a lot of his best skits...He had a daughter named Dena who toured with him, and they would perform his "Get it? Got it? Good!" routine from "Court Jester," among other things...
I remember "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" from my 10th grade english class in the 1986-87 school year. I was not a good student then & was just starting to find myself as a person (not quite as bad as "sitting on my do-nothing" & "doing nothing", but...) so I don't recall many of the details. Anyway, today, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 (the 21st century) I'm 38 years old & have access to Wikipedia. I see "Mitty" was written by JAMES Grover THURber (044-26-0726?). The Internet makes up for lost time
Other reading selections from that 1986-87 10th grade English class included "Our Town", about those gossipy busybodies talking about all of the town folks' business from a front porch. The class watched a stage adaptation witch starred CHARLOTTE RAE (beam attack); she's best known as Mrs. EDNA Garrett in the NBC sitcom "Facts Of Life". Unrelated to EDNA GARRETT: RIF HUTtON, the actor playing Lake EDNA KENtucky Fried Chicken owner RUSS BEELer in 1990s TV ads--but, he's not related to 246-62-0093
While "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" author JAMES Grover THURber was apparently assigned 044-26-0726 and "Our Town" writer THORNTON Wilder was apparently given 091-16-5905, the latter is not related to 241-20-7353 or 578-52-3300. Charlotte RAE (beam attack) is not NEW ORLEANS mayor, CLARENCE RAY (beam attack) NAGin, who was born on JUNE 11, 1956--exactly 93 years to the day after Winston-Salem State University (once W-S Teacher's College) founder, Dr. Simon Green Atkins' JUNE 11, 1863 birth.
Danny Kaye wasnt gay actually - he told his wife he had opportunities but never took them up- in fact he was a bit of lady's man. So often rumours spread and it's easy to interpret someone;s camp actions as 'gay'.
Nobody could do this outrageous comedy now except maybe Jim Carrey, but we all loved and respected Danny Kaye and I don't recall anyone caring that he was gay. We were trying to think of a gay actor these days who is as popular worldwide as Danny Kaye was. I remember first time I saw this film I was literally laughing so hard I was in tears. He was great!
@Bigman240 its very very sad that is has digressed to those. im glad im one of the few under 30 who appreciate the good style of comedy that is this ^_^
james thurber, the author of 'the secret life of walter mitty', hated this movie. many parts of the story were rewritten because danny kaye was starring. thurber felt the movie focused too much on the talents of danny kaye instead of the actual story.
personally i think danny kaye brought life to the story, the movie would not be as popular without him. =)
This routine was known as "Symphony For Unstrung Tongues" [by Sylvia Fine, Mrs. Kaye], but Danny, at the time, recorded it for Decca as "The Little Fiddle"...
thought he was great when i watched him when i was a kid. years have past and i have just tapped into my childhood thanks to these clips in youtube. danny had so much energy, i am most definetly going to get some of the old films to show the grandkids.
If you have kids and you want to show them the amazing work done during this period of American films, get them to watch Danny Kaye, Gene Kelly and a few other greats from this period.
My kids and my students (inner-city highschool kids no less) love this and it's so nice to show them something that is not about making them into consumers. They get to see amazing talent that is pretty inspirational.
one of my favourite movies! i watched his films a lot as a kid. i'm half englisch, half german, so i especially could relate to those scenes (see "up in arms" as well) where he takes the piss out of different accents. :) an all time favourite!!!!!!
I remember watching an old matinee movie one saturday morning as a kid-it wasn't this one but danny kaye was in it and I remember thinking he was wonderful, even aged only 6 or 7. And after seeing this, I still think so,lol.
I like this, it's cute, but I don't think that it is funny. Is it supposed to be funny? Nothing against it if it is, I'm just freaking difficult to entertain. I was told it was funny.
well people on youtube are touchy with blunt feelings. They can not take contructive critisizum, nor rejection, or disagreement. Especially with Obama. People are worshiping him. I am intitled to my own opinion, but wow, they get offencive when I say that i believe that we voted for the wrong man.
True, you can say the smallest thing and someone freaks and comes back and writes a personal attack, laden with all sorts of assumptions.
As for Obama, just remind them that your country's Constitution guarantees the right to free speech. Ask why things can't be discussed maturely.
I'm sorry if I sound preachy, but not allowing for a difference of opinion is just immature and, in the long run, limits growth. Not your problem...it's theirs. Don't let them shut you down.
What was the last thing that is played in the piece, the "Hooray the bad old glockenspiel is dead" thing? I think I heard it somewhere in an SNL skit (Ed Grimley, to be precise, he plays along with this song while practicing his triangle)
5:36... his complexion is shot so clear. the whites of his eyes and his teeth so white. I understand that the tecnology we use today makes our movies amazing but I think that these old movies just had this special aura
Danny was one of my Fav's a kid. I'll still watch his movies anytime I catch them on TV. OK. Here is a trivia question/answer for you folks... "Who was one of the original owners of the Seattle Mariners baseball team?" back in 1976?
James Thurber protested what Sam Goldwyn had done to his perfect litle short story, to no avail. But he DID keep Sam from making an overblown version of "The Catbird Seat" by aborting the deal to sell him the rights to THAT one. And what happened when Goldwyn turned J.D. Salinger's brilliant short story "Uncle Wiggly In Coonnecticut" into a soap opera/weeper called "My Foolish Heart" (1950)? Salinger felt so burned by that deal, he never sold the rights to ANY of his stories to Hollywood again.
I know when this movie is going on it's going to be in September 24th on TCM @ 3pm. But I don't know how along can you wait until the movie comes in September.
The movie is based on the short story, but they're very, very different. If you haven't read it, the short story is about a few very ordinary hours in the life of mild-mannered man who escapes into fantasies. It's far too brief to have much of a plot. It's a character sketch, more of an idea than a story. It is very easy to find online. Just search: Walter Mitty James Thurber (Thurber is the author.) The movie has a fairly involved plot revolving around a conspiracy and missing jewels.
Reminds me of that episode of Scrubs where that Russian surgeon comes and upstages Turk. He writes his name on the board and it's so long and he goes "I'll finish later". Hehehe.
True, the movie was only loosely based on the classic James Thurber story. Still, it's an entertaining film in its own right, and a must for Danny Kaye fans.
"this represents a young girl who is living with her wicked guardian who is a french horn..." hahaha! I wish Danny Kaye was *my* conductor!! Thanks so much for posting this!

Reminds me of that episode of Scrubs where that Russian surgeon comes and upstages Turk. He writes his name on the board and it's so long and he goes "I'll finish later". Hehehe.

the acucall story is rather tragic
this movie is a complelete opposite of what the author wanted

True, the movie was only loosely based on the classic James Thurber story. Still, it's an entertaining film in its own right, and a must for Danny Kaye fans.

I am 31 years old and think it took until our generation to get a comedian that could do as much with his countenance and voice as Danny Kaye.
the trick is Kaye could sing and dance... he so ruled.

*Bows in worship of Danny and to retrieve jaw from the floor*
Though I have to say that creepy lady spying on him at the end sort of ruined for me. But only a little : )
