  • Where does that kind of talent come from?

  • I'm in highschool and my english teacher is showing this, very funny.

  • i couldnt do this straight like him after a million takes..

  • this was one of my fathers first records, when i was 14 he discovered the magic of youtube and show this to me its been 3 years and i am still hoooked!

  • There is nothing that can even attempt to hold a candle to this type of entertainment today. Brilliant!

  • wat makes music music .... music duuhhh

  • at 0:34, you can see Robert Altman smoking a cigar at the bar in the background.

  • I love Danny Kaye, when I was younger I told me parents I wanted to marry him. He had so much talent that makes me laugh and cry. RIP: Danny Kaye, love you forever!

  • "chocolate molto..." haha....

  • Wow. He was perfect right down to the timing of the smallest facial tic.

  • @irishprince He died in 87, but if he or my gparents were alive they'd be the same age, haha.

  • I seriously have the biggest crush on this man, even though he's prolly as old as my grandparents

  • @xxizumisanoxx im afraid to say he passed away in the late 90's (dont quote me on the exact date)

  • I saw this a couple of days ago in my Language arts class. This is my favorite part of the movie. I looked like such an idiot cause I was laughing SO loud and hard. I wan't to see if myy drama teacher could play this for class cause this guy is and AMAZING actor.

  • I saw this in Italy as a kid almost 38 years ago, and loved it...

  • There isn't a single modern comedian who has as much talent in their whole body as Danny Kaye had in one of his eyebrow hairs. <3

  • I love him

  • i watched this so many times when i was small. unique movie, well acted by danny kaye.

  • I love Danny Kaye may he rest in peace. He was so freakin talented!!! This is real entertainment and real comedy!!

  • ur a grown ass man and u daydream all day????

  • I'm 14 and i love this stuff. i wish they still made good stuff like this:)

  • @oatmealloverxx3 just like me :D

  • Absolutely love. One of my favourite classics!!

  • Can anyone other than Danny Kaye do that? I can't do the last "drum roll" part to save my life.

  • @Veggieman87 lol...I can but I've been doing it since I was 12 or 13....My wife gets a kick out of my Danny Kaye...that's all that matters...:-)

  • There's no one else like Danny Kaye - my favorite comedien!

  • I love classic movies like this as the humor was a lot cleaner than it is today and they don't make movies like this anymore. I especially adore Danny Kaye--he was a true comedian artist.

  • I love this guy, I must admit I am curious...I've always wondered how many takes this took him to do and not crack up or get tounge tied, or both, lol

  • @celticgurl93 apparently that is something had been doing since childhood. he used to play word games with his sister i think it was.

  • lol funny.

  • Danny Kaye was NOT gay...he was married to Sylvia Fine Kaye, who wrote a lot of his best skits...He had a daughter named Dena who toured with him, and they would perform his "Get it? Got it? Good!" routine from "Court Jester," among other things...

  • Jeez -- How did this guy DO it? Did Sylvia Fine write this one too?

  • I love Danny Kaye because he'd always throw in little gems that you wouldn't expect.

  • this was just MOOOOOOD music

  • Great video. I love this scene. I found out about this movie when we read the story in English class.

  • YOUR ALL WALTER MITTYS!

  • I remember "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" from my 10th grade english class in the 1986-87 school year. I was not a good student then & was just starting to find myself as a person (not quite as bad as "sitting on my do-nothing" & "doing nothing", but...) so I don't recall many of the details. Anyway, today, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 (the 21st century) I'm 38 years old & have access to Wikipedia. I see "Mitty" was written by JAMES Grover THURber (044-26-0726?). The Internet makes up for lost time

  • Other reading selections from that 1986-87 10th grade English class included "Our Town", about those gossipy busybodies talking about all of the town folks' business from a front porch. The class watched a stage adaptation witch starred CHARLOTTE RAE (beam attack); she's best known as Mrs. EDNA Garrett in the NBC sitcom "Facts Of Life". Unrelated to EDNA GARRETT: RIF HUTtON, the actor playing Lake EDNA KENtucky Fried Chicken owner RUSS BEELer in 1990s TV ads--but, he's not related to 246-62-0093

  • While "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" author JAMES Grover THURber was apparently assigned 044-26-0726 and "Our Town" writer THORNTON Wilder was apparently given 091-16-5905, the latter is not related to 241-20-7353 or 578-52-3300. Charlotte RAE (beam attack) is not NEW ORLEANS mayor, CLARENCE RAY (beam attack) NAGin, who was born on JUNE 11, 1956--exactly 93 years to the day after Winston-Salem State University (once W-S Teacher's College) founder, Dr. Simon Green Atkins' JUNE 11, 1863 birth.

  • danny kaye was not gay. he had a wife who wrote all of his songs actually

  • @mindninjaz Danny Kaye was also in love with Laurence Olivier, the reputed greatest actor of all time.

  • @theScytheofGod Yes, I heard Vivien Leigh almost had a heart attack when she saw Danny Kaye and Olivier kissing.

  • @mahler71 That's fucking hysterical.

  • And wish I could find this movie on netflix!!

  • I love Danny Kaye.

  • Danny Kaye wasnt gay actually - he told his wife he had opportunities but never took them up- in fact he was a bit of lady's man. So often rumours spread and it's easy to interpret someone;s camp actions as 'gay'.

  • Nobody could do this outrageous comedy now except maybe Jim Carrey, but we all loved and respected Danny Kaye and I don't recall anyone caring that he was gay. We were trying to think of a gay actor these days who is as popular worldwide as Danny Kaye was. I remember first time I saw this film I was literally laughing so hard I was in tears. He was great!

  • Future director Robert Altman in the background at 0:33.

  • My mother loves this guy. He is cool!

  • Unbelieveable. Timeless. I think that would go over even now.

  • 4:48 is the best!!

  • Budda da da dau budda du du buddda da da da AYEEEE XD I love this!!

  • dude, with those skills he would be a killer horn player

  • Adore it...

  • Its like Adam Sandler, but not at all.

  • what ever happened to good comedy like this?

  • @kardiez you mean...naive humor?..nah it doesn't do it for me..maybe for the era...neither does today's toilet humor

  • @kardiez It's all sex, drugs and violence now. A sign of the times perhaps?

  • @Bigman240 its very very sad that is has digressed to those. im glad im one of the few under 30 who appreciate the good style of comedy that is this ^_^

  • @kardiez see also victor borge

  • This is one of my favorite songs. :)

  • LMFAO

  • te-poketa te-poketa te-poketa

  • Haha this was funny.:D He's America's Povel Rammel(look him up)

  • If you could that would actually be a real talent. ^^

  • funny as hell and i saw this movie in school

  • How can one heart throb hold so much talent??

  • this is an amazing movie!! this is my favorite scene!

  • Brilliant, I think he was a great influence on Jim Carrey. He (DK) was great in all his films.

  • Wow weee that was fabulous, and so funny! Don't think even Jim Carrey could keep up!

  • BRILLIANCE in action!

  • ''t,paka t'paka

  • Much missed Legend.

  • i LOVED that lol i read that in my freshman year but it was very diff.

  • james thurber, the author of 'the secret life of walter mitty', hated this movie. many parts of the story were rewritten because danny kaye was starring. thurber felt the movie focused too much on the talents of danny kaye instead of the actual story.

personally i think danny kaye brought life to the story, the movie would not be as popular without him. =)

  • the movie brought the book to life. i don't think it would've been as good without they way they did it

  • one of a kind, just brilliant!

  • Danny is so adorable <3.

  • when i first saw this in my english class my freshman year, i was trying not to laugh because it was so damn funny. Danny, you were a true genius.

  • A true genius, and a great humanitarian. Danny kaye was one of the few stars of his time truly untouched by his celebrity.

  • He was A true comic genius! I wish he and Betty Hutton would have done A movie together. Two of the greatest talents ever !

  • This routine was known as "Symphony For Unstrung Tongues" [by Sylvia Fine, Mrs. Kaye], but Danny, at the time, recorded it for Decca as "The Little Fiddle"...

  • thought he was great when i watched him when i was a kid. years have past and i have just tapped into my childhood thanks to these clips in youtube. danny had so much energy, i am most definetly going to get some of the old films to show the grandkids.

  • If you have kids and you want to show them the amazing work done during this period of American films, get them to watch Danny Kaye, Gene Kelly and a few other greats from this period.

My kids and my students (inner-city highschool kids no less) love this and it's so nice to show them something that is not about making them into consumers. They get to see amazing talent that is pretty inspirational.

  • good point. just plain talent. the actors of this era could sing, dance and act. and these movies were not highly commercialised.

I would much rather my children look up to talent and creativity, rather than a face and what is fashionable and trendy and 'in'.

  • lol

  • This is a great musical and unfotunately I had the displeasure to watch an AmDram performance in Dutch the other day..... good God.....

  • Amazing man...one of the funniest people to have ever graced the silver screen.

  • What a talent. He was truly a national treasure.

  • one of my favourite movies! i watched his films a lot as a kid. i'm half englisch, half german, so i especially could relate to those scenes (see "up in arms" as well) where he takes the piss out of different accents. :) an all time favourite!!!!!!

  • Man, I love this scene. Danny Kaye is awesome.

  • I remember watching an old matinee movie one saturday morning as a kid-it wasn't this one but danny kaye was in it and I remember thinking he was wonderful, even aged only 6 or 7. And after seeing this, I still think so,lol.

  • I like this, it's cute, but I don't think that it is funny. Is it supposed to be funny? Nothing against it if it is, I'm just freaking difficult to entertain. I was told it was funny.

  • Jacklgf, you don't need to apologize for something you feel. Everyone's different.

  • well people on youtube are touchy with blunt feelings. They can not take contructive critisizum, nor rejection, or disagreement. Especially with Obama. People are worshiping him. I am intitled to my own opinion, but wow, they get offencive when I say that i believe that we voted for the wrong man.

  • True, you can say the smallest thing and someone freaks and comes back and writes a personal attack, laden with all sorts of assumptions.

As for Obama, just remind them that your country's Constitution guarantees the right to free speech. Ask why things can't be discussed maturely.

I'm sorry if I sound preachy, but not allowing for a difference of opinion is just immature and, in the long run, limits growth. Not your problem...it's theirs. Don't let them shut you down.

  • ROTFLMHO how can he breathe?! haa haa now I can't :P he is sooooo funny I just about fell out of my chair ^_^

  • Watched this in english class , my favorite part i laughed so hard

  • Truly Amazing one of the most talented actors to ever grace the big screen Gotta love him

  • Maybe Monty Python's Johan Gambalputty skit originated from this scene? :)

  • What was the last thing that is played in the piece, the "Hooray the bad old glockenspiel is dead" thing? I think I heard it somewhere in an SNL skit (Ed Grimley, to be precise, he plays along with this song while practicing his triangle)

  • 5:36... his complexion is shot so clear. the whites of his eyes and his teeth so white. I understand that the tecnology we use today makes our movies amazing but I think that these old movies just had this special aura

  • Mmmmmm... I have always like Danny Key he was so funny and abel.

  • the short story is so sad...

  • how does walter get into these daydreams?

  • I love Don knotts to..But Danny Kaye was wonderful in this movie..

  • ABSOLUTELY AWESOME what a vocal talent Danny Kaye had, not apprieciated fully I feel... brilliant... post more please...

  • 5:33 Omg!!! he's so funny

  • Danny was one of my Fav's a kid. I'll still watch his movies anytime I catch them on TV. OK. Here is a trivia question/answer for you folks... "Who was one of the original owners of the Seattle Mariners baseball team?" back in 1976?

  • Danny Kaye

  • Danny Kaye was brilliant! A true talent. Actors/comedians today should take notes. I love how he always mixed music with his comedy!

  • DEfinetly, he was very brilliant in his acting..

  • Ok, I'm 14 but I still love him..HOW THE HECK DOES HE DO IT?!?! I LOVE IT!

  • You and me alike kiddo XD. He's incredibly charming...and funny...and handsome. XD

  • fantastic!

  • James Thurber protested what Sam Goldwyn had done to his perfect litle short story, to no avail. But he DID keep Sam from making an overblown version of "The Catbird Seat" by aborting the deal to sell him the rights to THAT one. And what happened when Goldwyn turned J.D. Salinger's brilliant short story "Uncle Wiggly In Coonnecticut" into a soap opera/weeper called "My Foolish Heart" (1950)? Salinger felt so burned by that deal, he never sold the rights to ANY of his stories to Hollywood again.

  • if i to meet 1 famous dead guy, it would be danny kaye

  • Me too, ether him or Gene Kelly..Or fred astaire..Or jhon wayne..Dang! There are way to many great actors!

  • danny k is an outstanding actor and i luuuv this movie. it's a total classic! : D

  • PURE GOLD. Where can I get the lyrics to this song? googled "The Little Fiddle"; the lyrics are similar but not quite the same.....

  • is there anyway for me to upload this to my computer and on to a jumpdrive?

i want to show my kids what it's like to really get into your charater like danny kaye!

  • Now THAT took me back over 40yrs! I'd forgotten where I'd heard 'poora poora poora eh phuutt ee' from. Now I know. Thanks.

  • Is this movie the same thing as the short story of the same title?

  • The movie is based on the short story, but they're very, very different. If you haven't read it, the short story is about a few very ordinary hours in the life of mild-mannered man who escapes into fantasies. It's far too brief to have much of a plot. It's a character sketch, more of an idea than a story. It is very easy to find online. Just search: Walter Mitty James Thurber (Thurber is the author.) The movie has a fairly involved plot revolving around a conspiracy and missing jewels.

  • The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is Danny Kaye at his best! He truklly was Walter!!! Such a delightful, and one of my favorite, movies!!!

  • wot! seen this years ago on tv! unbelievable! feckin class

  • No way can one man be so talented.. I refuse to believe that Danny Kaye was Human. He was more than what a human can ever be.

  • I totally agree! Tupucata, Tupucata, Tupucata!!!!

  • Absolute Genius!!! Danny Kaye was amazing!!!

  • MLMN./M,.NVCNBJG

  • MLMN./M,.NVCNBJG

  • very good very good ı love this movie and this part too...:)

  • I love this movie! Wish I owned it but no! It's not out any more

  • Reminds me of that episode of Scrubs where that Russian surgeon comes and upstages Turk. He writes his name on the board and it's so long and he goes "I'll finish later". Hehehe.

  • How was that funny? I mean its a great short story the last part of it is great.

  • How come everybody had to watch this at school? is it based on a novel or something?

  • yyyyyyyyyup.

  • Based on a classic short story by James Thurber. You might want to read it.

  • DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE THE WHOLE MOVIE The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? WHAT DOES BORRIS karloff DO IN THE MOVIE AND WHAT IS THE MOVIE ABOUT

  • This kind of thing happens to be people in arrainged marriage because the guy can't get a girl on his own.

  • i had to watch this movie at school & i laughed so hard at this scene

    loved the movie too =]

    he is delightfull

  • He is a riot!

  • danny kaye!! what a talent this has to compete with the best (mirror scene groucho marx, duck soup) jerry lewis typriter song , you decide

  • Haha. Love this part. I need to watch this movie again, I've only seen it once or twice.

  • this was my favorite part of the movie when i saw it at school. ^^

  • Classic and BEAUTIFUL!!!...:) Karen

  • I ansolutely lvoe this movie. We watched it in english class.

  • haha me too

  • same here!

  • we did too!

  • the acucall story is rather tragic

this movie is a complelete opposite of what the author wanted

  • True, the movie was only loosely based on the classic James Thurber story. Still, it's an entertaining film in its own right, and a must for Danny Kaye fans.

  • BRILLIANT MASTER OF ALL TIME !!

  • I am 31 years old and think it took until our generation to get a comedian that could do as much with his countenance and voice as Danny Kaye.

the trick is Kaye could sing and dance... he so ruled.

  • I LOVE this scene!!! Thanks for posting!!!

  • Most excellent! Thanks.

  • thanks for sharing. all his movings are good but i am having trouble of getting one of his movies that when he has a brother called buz

  • That movie is called Wonder Man... email Filmgenius89 at gmail dot com for info on how you can get a copy.

  • aka: rubio

  • This is a really funny part of the movie stop critizing it.

  • corection my narrow minded companion. This is REAL comedy.

  • "this represents a young girl who is living with her wicked guardian who is a french horn..." hahaha! I wish Danny Kaye was *my* conductor!! Thanks so much for posting this!

  • *Bows in worship of Danny and to retrieve jaw from the floor*

Though I have to say that creepy lady spying on him at the end sort of ruined for me. But only a little : )
