This movie was released on March 10, 1978, almost ten years after the U.S. Navy's last maritime disaster, which was the loss of the Skipjack-class nuclear attack sub USS Scorpion on May 22, 1968. Unfortunately, there would be another maritime sinking, this time involving the U.S. Coast Guard, when the USCGC Blackthorn was accidentally sunk on January 28, 1980, by the tanker SS Capricorn.
A damn good and underrated movie. Thanks for posting the clip!
The minute the guy announced that there was a ship ahead, I would have turned on the foglights at full power and let out the signal. He should've warned the ship that they were getting too close.
I am listening to the bearings and course info provided by the watchstander and I am having trouble visualizing this scenario. Did the scriptwriters get it right?
USN nuclear submarines don't perform "emergency deeps" or "crash dives" from the surface. They are capable of diving in a hurry but, they're usually planned dives.
The captain waited too long to blow the tanks. If he would of blown his tanks at 100 feet they might of made it to the surface before they took on too much water.

@traingp7
but if he had blown out his tanks at 100 feet, the movie would be over after 5 minutes ;-)

ok, so why the fuck didnt they just preform an emergency dive and go under?

The freighter was probably too close to be avoided even with an emergency dive. At least that's my guess.
