Ford didnt make mavericks til 1970. I know because i have a 1970, the 19th one to roll off the assembly line in the new model year sept of 69. It boggles my mind to see them in this video if the title states fords drag team of the 60's. Anyway this video is cool as hell and i am true blue ford hence my you tube name mavman 351 and yes, mine has a 351w in it. Go ford!
anyone that sais that ford dominated drag racing is wrong..i was there..there was NEVER a ford engine that would compete with the 426 hemi..why do you think the hemi cars had to run extra ballast in drag racing and were banned from nascar only to be brought back for the short tracks only and allowed to run a very low profile intake..show me one ford that can compete in S/S with the hemi A bodies..the max wedge stockers ruled in stock eliminator..and all fuelers ARE chrysler based hemi design..
@superstock426 weight restrictions on fords part! in certain classses fords can race, this is a big reason why ford made the thunderbolt427 in 64. and it pissed on hemis, look at 68 428 winternat championship ford swept that, beating hemis, factory light weights fords 427 galaxies were pissin on hemis. SS/A classes ford won most races due to there engines the hemis had an advantage with better transmissions, but the 427 again pissed on hemis. 427hi-risers med-risers tunnelports and cammers....
@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI SS/A?..WTH?..Go to a NHRA event and show me a ford running in it...Show me a ford running with the dart and barracuda hemi cars..the damn things are running 8.20s...just recently they had to be put into a class all their own because nothing could compete with them..and yes the weight restrictions were added to the hemis in Pro Stock I believe in 1972..
@superstock426 sounds to me like your just rambling on about owner built drag cars instead of factory built race cars! perhaps this will piss your ass off more 1963-1973 ford had a near 87% total dominance in auto racing (AROUND THE WORLD)! meaning factory built or factory sponsered cars. ever heard the word TOTAL PERFORMANCE? the bottom line is your 426 hemi is just hype and yet 428s and all of the 427s ford was building pissed on hemis, your blocked get a life fat ass troll, ford hating virgin
Ford does not dominate drag racing...especially in NHRA Funny cars...the engine is Chrysler based ..all fuel engines are and John Force and Carl Edwards keep talking about their Fords.."BULLSHIT!!!..there is not one damned part in either one of those rigs made by Ford...someone needs to tell them both to STFU...it's all bullshit and many of the consuming public swallows that phony shit..I have dealt with Ford since 1964 and they are a bunch of cheap sons a bitches.
The 428 was a cheap excuse for a high performance engine..the 427 was an excellent engine( all 5 versions of them) but had the worst heads of any engine I ever built!!!..total junk...the rocker arm assemblies were even worse..now that we have decent aluminum heads and rocker arms..no one casts the 427 block... the 427 of today is a minute little 351 "W" stretched to the limits..a sorry assed excuse for a 427..but that is the way Ford does business...maybe that is why we run Mopars now
Um don't forget about the 385 series blocks that got far superior Hemi heads, wait a minute, call that cresent heads, when alan root bought the tooling to redesign the heads in the late 70s for truck and tractor pullers as well as the famed BIGFOOT, john kasse now has gotten his hands on the tooling, and built a 466 big block producing 750hp on pump gas, can that be said of any mopar head, NOPE, thats why ford dominated drag racing and NASCAR with BOSS 429 engine period.
@73elrodalexander..yep ..Kasse heads are great..if you are a Wall Street Banker..the average drag racer can't come close to afford a set of them...the same is true for Ford engines in general..they are too god dam expensive and for no reason...pound for pound part for part Chevrolet has kicked their asses for 40 years and the Ford boys are too dam stupid to figure it out..I still run 6 Fords but they are slowly going on the chopping block for Mopars....Ford does a bad job marketing their cars.
@raginroadrunner i can build a 460 with Ford CJ heads ($1.500) put in my 69 fastback and beat chevys! all for under $10.000. expensive? what a 427 cammer! yeah. a smallblock no! a 429/460 fuck no! a FE? not much more. and then it comes to how the car is built regardless of brand your a fuckin loser always talking shit about cars and saying fords are too expensive to build or race! what world are you living in? get a life jew bait keyboard commando
@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI oh and another thing! ford hasnt been backing factroy race cars since 1973 so techinically these superstock cars your talking about are not engines made by ford. they are all aftermarket! get your shit right nut gobblin
@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI..yeah..I know..i"ve been building Fords since 1963..when you were still jumping around in someone's nuts ....punk.. your all mouth...
Try shifting like that in todays cars and you will break the shifter off lol. Ah yeah back when they made real cars. The sound of that last one gave me goose pimples. What a beast!!! And there you have it...where my name here came from!
I need a restoration. I am the original owner of a very rare first edition mode 1970 Torino Cobra. Am about to lose it. How rare is it? It may be the only one made with only one side view mirror from the factory. I bought it brand new when I came home from the war.
Now this is REAL drag racing! No automatic trannys, no air shifters, no delay boxes! Just you, the car, a shift lever, and a clutch pedal that gets very abused!
@Trav450ER.......... a well prepared automatic will out perform a manual transmission....I worked with automatics since 1964...better transfer of power to the rear wheels.....
@Italianrocker81 Trust me it won't break. I used to race my '70 Torino in the mid '70s putting out about 550 hp come off the line at 6 grand and still have the same U joints in the car today, had the car weighed just like it came from the factory with beams to tie the frame together, it weighed 4,080 lbs. Ran a best 12.27/109mph. And yes I have a top loader also.
@bubblejomay thanks for your comment, do you mean with 1310 or 1330 U joints? I have a 1310 greasable U joints on my shaft, I don't know if it came from the factory with the 390 engine in 1969 but they have the same size of a small block U joints
@Italianrocker81 Oh no I have the big U joints, the small ones will not stand up, I have a 429 that has an aftermarket cam, headers, the engine has been balanced plus a multi angle valve job, aftermarket pistons plus it was built by a Master and I do mean a MASTER engine builder.
I was a T-10 gear jammer like this in my 425hp 67 mustang coupe when I was 18. I never used cheeta slicks on the the rear, just a set of AR-78 recaps every month for the street.
@DeleteMeOnline i worked to a standard gas station (chevron now) back in the day and put a set of polyster tires on the rear of my 66 stang (small block) and you could lite'm up almost at an idle!! it made for one hell of a burnout - what a wonderful time to be alive in america - the things we could do back then-
Any of the younger people who are trying to race a standard today needs to listen to this video very closely. This is how you shift. Nothing I hate more than some kid trying to race his GT Mustang lifting off the gas AND punching the clutch to the floor the whole way. Pedal to the floor, never lift... Maybe enough clutch to unload slightly... YANK and PUSH that shifter like you are trying to rip it out of the floor. GEEZ, back in the day people were breaking their arms if they missed a shift.
@capriracer351 back then you shaved every other tooth off 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears for a crash box. The power shift gift is lost today on automatics and lencos.
@speedskiff2 Yeah, I know. My Dad could shift like this even in the last couple years of his life when he was ill He started out in the early 60's..... Really knew how to make a Toploader work. Today, I do C4's instead. That is the reality of bracket racing I guess. Wouldn't mind having a Lenco, but a used one would cost more than my entire car.
@capriracer351 I only ran a Q/S slant six back in the day and had to run against 265 and 283 sbc. Only one I couldn't beat was an $8,000 Truppi-Kling 283 2 bbl that could run under record if he had to. If I could do it again, only change is make it go faster...........lol
Those Truppi Kling guys really had it going on back then. I think Ralph Truppi died a couple years ago, too bad, a great talent even if it were Chevy stuff. One thing I've learned is you can never go fast enough!!
Those slant sixes were pretty impressive. Did you ever see the ones that the Aussies had? They were giving SBC's and SBF's a run for their money right from the factory. If I remember right, they were a Hemi head engine. That would have opened some eyes over here.
@capriracer351 had located an aluminum block in a Valiant wagon and an OHC head in MN but didn't pursue. Friend had a 260 in a 61 Falcon w/289 heads and motor by J.J. Bolander in North Jersey. TL and 456 gear was going 12.8s on F70 tires in 1968. Combo was pulling rear spring mounts out of unibody. Ford made a lot of mistakes with right engine in wrong car, but that Falcon wasn't one of them.
@capriracer351 Amen Brotha, I got a toploader in my 63 Galaxie and nothing makes me happier then to hear that FE being pushed to redline as I yank the next gear with the 4500 lbs boat jumping to the side and tires hollering....but that's just me
I am going to buy a pair of Wingtip shoes after seeing this. It puts a whole new badass spotlight on Wingtips for sure! .... the powershifting sounded great too!
Ah man! This brings back cool memories! I raced my small-block Falcon & I was proud of it's consistent 15.3 times, although I had to be careful not to break out in the cool night air. It was really fun racing the brackets. I enjoyed watching the big boys run their SS CJ Mustangs, pro stock SOHC Mavericks, & AA/FC SOHC funny cars. Those were the good ole days! Damn! Too fat to race now-a-days! Lol.
