Wally's explanation is actually a reference to how the one of the game's designers survived a car accident, he was thrown free and survived because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt.

Actually it is stated that George Lucas himself was the one who was thrown when he was a teenager. Only to be saved from the rolling car because his safety harness broke which he claims "Should never have happened in the first place"
