Oh God! The soundtrack for this flick was what lead me to be a diehard fan of Elton John. I remember having my ears caught when I heard "Can You Feel the Love Tonight at the end of the film. I didn´t know who the singer was at the time, I was 8 years old then. A few years later I found out it was some guy named Elton John. The rest is history! This film brings pleasant memories.

@webeffect Zimmer did use bits of the songs in the score, there's the chorus of Can You Feel The Love Tonight when Zazu talks to Simba and Nala about getting married, then the start of I Just Can't Wait To Be King when Simba disagrees. Later, there's the Be Prepared outro as the hyenas turn on Scar, and a choral version of Circle of Life at the end.

He didn't use more probably because the songs' upbeat melodies were at odds with the sad/bleak scenes that make up a lot of the movie.
