"Piano Man" wasn't that popular when it first came out in 1973. Joel wasn't well-known then, and the song never reached the top 20 on Billboard. Listeners became reacquainted with it when Joel achieved stardom with "The Stranger" in 1977, and it eventually became Joel's signature when he achieved fame with "The Stranger" in 1977.
I've come across Mr. Joel a few times over the years. He's a regular guy and doesn't insulate himself from the world as many celebrities do today.
Billy Joel and Steve Jobs will be in different parts of the afterlife. Billy Joel in the area where people with talent go, and Steve Jobs in the area for people who stole the talents of others.
i like this because it prooves he actually wrote it and he took time in this song not someone singing a song someone else busting his or her's ass and they take all the credit
This song is so universal......thats whats so amazng about it. Yesterday i went to make a payment to conn's and they were blasting this song, i was slowly singing it and the old lady that was processing my payment started singing it with me. That my friends is real music that anyone can relate people together and bind them. Thanks Joel.
I love the raised eyebrow just before he jumps into the jazzy lil solo, as if to say, check me out, and my dexterously spider-like fingers of epicness.
This song reminds me of my visually impaired son whose classmate was a savant that knew the lyrics to this song and sang them and played them on the piano and it was just great!!!
Great rendition of his song. And it is really truly live before auto-tune, click tracks, and other garbage technology sucked the very life out of music. Most "rock stars" or "country stars" of today cannot do this. They cannot sing their own song, on pitch, in a live setting. Billy can, and he seems a genius in comparison.
He IS a good egg!!! I've met him, as well, and he is just a normal guy. No ego, no fake head nods. The next time I ran into him, he even remembered my name!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Think if Billy Joel's 1975 self auditioned this song for American Idol today. They'd have to cancel the show right then and there because they'd never find a better voice than that.
@Rift1d To be honest I wouldn't bet on it these days. He'd probably get told to change everything that makes him him, and then get pipped at the final post by a girl with a mediocre voice, but good looks.
Ron Jeremy? I thought it was Freddy Prinz. just kidding, lol. I love Billy Joel! He is sooooo talented! I'm glad that he came along in this part of history. If he were around a couple of hundred years ago, not as many people would be able to hear him & appreciate his gifts. Thanks Billy!!
yea the reason he dosent have liberty is he used studio musicians for the first three albums and in 1976 the year of turnstiles he finally got his band together for the studio and on including liberty
I was so sad..... I'm fifteen and I had the chance to go see him in Boston and he had to pull out of his tour and go back to alcohol rehab........ It's so sad to see such a great musician struggle with such an unpredictable illness.
He may not be pretty, his singing voice may not the world's greatest, but I'd put this man up against ANY singer / songwriter / musician of the rock era.
Indeed this man is a musical genius. One of a few of the best.
He is also genius of science about society.
Better than most professors.
