Michael McDonald (one of my all time heroes) is brilliant here... Not forgetting Freddie Washington... Please check out the Brilliant groove he laid down with Joe Sample doing 'Streetlife'
Keith Cralock is in my book the best drummer on the scene he has more space & feel than any of the chop merchants out there he is a joy to watch. (I only wish he would replace my 18" crash he cracked on his NZ Auckland gig while I was on tour.)
@1960COB at last i've found another drummer who isn't just interested in chops! After hearing 3,000 drummers do the same thing I just want to hear some musicality!
@1960COB Saw this same show a few weeks before this recording, Keith Cralock's feel was breathtaking. Just a master. I wish I could play live with him, but just listening is a joy.
I started playing drums when i was 12 yrs old and i am now 60.....still playing!
So i feel i am qualified to comment on the sheer brilliance of Keith Carlock, this guy is not just a fabulous technician but has musicality, and total feel. It gives me such pleasure to see this level of musicianship.
Donald being the star of the show feels free to elbow Michael out of the lead vocal and I'm sure that Michael's look on 3:56 reveals some irritation noticing that Donald is squeezing out some bum notes. Michael is a legendary skillfull vocalist, Donald should have taken a back seat there.
I like the new chord changes in the song - it's a very updated sound for this tune. SD has always been a favorite band. Saw them live in 1974 and again in 1992 - vastly improved, and here again!
I remember the original version, with the redoubtable Denny Dias on guitar, but I think Jon Herington's solo is just a wee shade better. Now if Herington could play with his eyes closed.
Donald Fagen declared that his songs were like paintings and, that his canvas was a recording (on magnetic tape).
This is the very reason that Steely Dan never toured was that Mr. Fagen and Mr. Becker felt that their artwork would be (could be) diminished by a live facsimile of their recordings. I believe Donald Fagen was satisfied with the integrity of this particular live attempt at his 1974 recording.
I think fans need to understand that musicians, being creative creatures, would rot on the vine, if 35 years later, they toured, only to re-create what was a performance & arrangement that was THEN,
This is now, and creative people don't like tracing & re-tracing their tracks ad infinitum.
For those who wish to hear songs EXACTLY as they were when first recorded, that's what records, CDs, and now mp3s are for....
@StevenCharlesJazz@StevenCharlesJazz Really agree with this comment. In this respect, modern composers and performers are not so free as their counterparts before the recording era, many of whom would revise their works throughout their lives, as their musical tastes changed. Without a recording of the piece as a reference for comparison, the audience could fully enjoy the "new" version.
@StevenCharlesJazz Well said. If the creative rearranging works (like it does here), it adds a different dimension while not losing the song's original form. As I watch this, I can't help but wonder what would have happened had McDonald stayed with Fagen & Becker. I guess we can just enjoy the song.
By the way, I love how this video ended. Fagen giving his best Yogi Berra- "deja vu, all over again"- priceless.
McDonald is an excellent vocalist. He does this well. It just doesn't sound enough like the original in terms of arrangement or voices. In that way, it disappoints. Still, it's enjoyable.
These guys live in a creative world and anything that stands still will be stagnet. If all you desire is to listen to the original, best to simply listen to your recording and forget live performances - as D F says "1974 deja vu all over again" which means "already seen" - a sensation you have witnessed previously but not a carbon copy. It is helpful to know that these guys desire to advance into new inviting territory - same tune but w new interesting twists - boring otherwise. Live fr today
I love Mr. McDonald and wouldn't intentionally hurt any feelings. I'd like to be 1/2 as talented as he is. It's just that I prefer the original singer-that's all. I did love his work with the Doobie Brothers though. Damned good musician.
Hey Kniteflyte, or whatever your stupid name is, you must be a really good singer yourself to be able to comment about Michael Macdonalds voice in such a derogatory manner. Somehow I just guess that you aren't. Ant Rivers - keep up the positive comments, and don't you dare lighten up!
No way. This isn't 'Do It again." No Sitar solo? The song is not the same without it, and what's up with Michael McDonald? The guy sounds like Joe Cocker with a vocal range of 5 notes.
For being one of my favorite songs I'm very dissappointed in this rendition.
I hear what you are saying but I think you have to cut them a little slack, playing a song exactly the same way for 30 odd years could drive you nuts!
I've read many comments on youtube over the years but yours is without question the single stupidest thing I've ever read. Michael McDonald with a 5 note range?!?!?! Clearly you've a great knowledge of singers. Absoloutely hilarious.
Glad I was able to entertain you. I'm quite sure you've read much more stupider comments than mine. You just lack the intelligence to recognise it. Pity. Life must be hard for you.
I'm sorry. You're right. He has a range of 8 notes. I forgot the sharps and flats.
Lighten up. It was only opinion. I didn't care one bit for McDonalds performance in this song. And if you really think McDonald is all that, you're the one that lacks the knowlege of good singers.
Think you'll find if you include sharps and flats you'll get around twelve notes. Just thought your original comment was ridiculous. Listen to What a Fool Believes and tell me about his range. As for singing the song, all he actually did was sing the original tune. Would you have preferred him to scat all over it?
But if I only included 5 whole notes (which was my original intent) the #s would add three depending where on the scale I start. 8 sounds about right. :o)
It's only an opinion guys. That takes nothing away from your enjoyment of Michael McDonald. I liked him with the Doobies. I wouldn't have gone to several of their concerts had I thought they and he were so bad. I think his skills have decreased a lot. What a Fool Belives was 30 years ago. We all lose it after time. I think MacDonald has.
Michael McDonald does a good job with this adding the blue eyed soul touch. He shows he can be a team player with Fagen who I hear is tough to get along with. I would left out the horns and added more of the electric piano from the original. The song was enjoyable notwithstanding.
listen to the horn licks behind the vocals - stunning. And Carlock is god. No better drummer playing right now, period. I have to say that the Irvine '06 show that I saw was just so-so. The '03 tour dates in SD and LA were jaw dropping. '08 was very good as well, but '03 at Universal Amphitheater was sublime.
I was at this show. It was the best show I have ever seen. Better than DMB, John Mayer, Rush... It was unreal, the musicianship. When Mike came out and sang this song it was fantastic. You cant really explain his voice live in words... Videos do it no justice. It just has a strength and emotion to it that just sends chills down your back. I remember when he sang the first line of this song I FLIPPED out! Like I said, the videos of this show do not do it justice. You had to be there!
That guitarist that plays the solos is good, but he doesn't capture the feel of the songs he plays, ever.. He destroys kid charlemagne in the vid in my favs. This is overall pretty damn weak, though I want to bang that brunette backup singer, at least we get to look at her for a while.
he's a studio musician. Yes he's very good at what he does, and I think he captures the feel well, but he doesn't really have the showmanship of a live musician... he's used to sitting in front of a microphone.
She (Carolyn Leonhart) and the trumpet player (Michael Leonhart) are actually siblings. Their father was a famous Jazz bassist. Carolyn is married to Wayne Escoffery, an English jazz trumpet player. She fronts her own band in NYC as a jass vocalist. Still...definately bangable.
Just as long as Carolyn Leonhart isn't banging her "brother" Michael Leonhart, then everything is above board on my tally sheet. Half of The Dan's lyrics are about creepy stuff just like that scenario, which gets me wondering about Walter and Donald.
Especially Walter. He seems to me, personality-wise, to be an "unknown quantity"... hmmmmm....
Actually, Wayne is a black American tenor sax player... He currently plays with Tom Harrell and has his own group here in NYC, as well as playing in his wifes band
Actually you should have heard in on the '00 tour - he played his Tele instead with a lot more grind and tore this song up. He's got a tough job covering these tunes and strikes a pretty good balance between doing his thing and honoring the original. But this particular one is a bit laid back.
