darn nice thanks for the tutorial, jeez I've been running constantly and i didn't know you had to take two steps! it actually helps, thanks so much! i luv using aerial techniques :D
hey man good job you should lean your body straighter for balance, yu'll find that when you do you will have more balance when you land and when you perfect it you'll be able to move anywere or attack again.
i love this guy (no homo) all my friends say oh look at me, im so strong, i can do a flying sidekick so high, but i told them that its easier to evade and counter if a kick is too high
lol TKD isn't just for sport or 1on1 fighting...it's used for war...there may be an obstacle with the target on the other side busy with something else o.o
@animenolifer2 no empty hand martial art is used for war anymore, youll always have some weapon and there is very little face to combat in modern battles.Tkd would be terrible choice if there was
It's very easy to do to people that are turned around and fighting someone else, so if some people try to jump you and your friends, you can do it very easy to someone whos not looking =D
ballet mans awesome flying sidekick seems to me like a very good assualt technique like i mean for throwing at someone who isn't even expecting to be attacked.
The only time the realy high flying kicks are usefull is when you need to knock a guy off a bike or something. I heared that ninja used to knock samirai off their hourses with flying kicks. Maybe if there was a steping stone in play that would work
good video... i never do flying sidekick during tkd competition.maybe have to train more.
beside, my points were gained from my sliding side kick in the rite time and the accurate target between chest and waist area. lucky TKD competition not allow pasticipants to do catch or leg trap for takedown like what i had to face in pencak silat competition.
the main things for me to do whatever type of side kick is understand about the concept of blind spot.
you are going for a blackbelt and you dont know how to perform a jumping sidekick at all? how long have you been training? you need to get out of your McDojo who hand out blackbelts to anyone. get into a real style thats not a sport. black belts should be earned with ALOT of hard work. where i train blackbelts are given to people who have been training for at least 5 years and the grading or "test" takes an entire day and entry is by invitation from the grand master only when he "thinks you ok"
huge flying kicks in demostration are just a show of skill ...p.s you suck at fighting your kicks in your mma ''fights'' were hilariously shit ...what a ridiculous video ...in one of your videos there is you breaking bricks in a DEMONSTRATION .....BUT DO YOU USE BREAKING BRICKS TO WIN A FIGHT ......OBV NOT COZ ITS A FUKIN DEMONSTRATION .....get it?
Say if ur god of flying kicks? say if theyre sufficient enuf to to jump high enuf fast anuf powerful enuf to beat that typical hook punch? dont u dare say flying kiks aint nothin in a street ifhgt..only if ur shit at them...i had a gang fight the other day wid are lots and i flew kik and won.
this technique is very dangerous. I've seen a guy tried that and got slammed on his head. The defender steps in blocks and grab the kick leg and lift it in the air and slam. I've also seen this wudang guy tried it twice on a bigger opponent and just bounced off the guy's chest and fell on the ground. This happened twice during the fight. I forgot the name of the show but it matches different chinese martial arts against each other. These are some points to watch out for when using this technique
I am more of a Karate fighter, actually my main fighting style is Japanese archery and sword... But I have done Taekwondo for fun, and I just wanna tell you, that I landed an axe kick in my MMA class, so it works, you just gotta intergrade it into your fighting, as opposed to fighting like you're in a Taekwondo tournament =)
@GuamKomudo the word is integrate. The only axe kick youll be landing is on useless students ,you could land almost anyting on them, the axe kick has very low percentage in mma style fights.
@NinjaKrow i think youll find the majority of it is useless. Some kicks will work on bagels(useless hures) but tkds problem is tat they dont set up kicks with the hands ,if ye do that it can be effective if your timing and speed are enough. The flying side kick has no palce in any match, its too slow and results in a pushing motion with little impact.Cung le uses comon tkd kicks like lead side kick and spinning back kick well but he has gifted timing and a complete game.
Who was that idiot at 0:08? What the hell was wrong with him for him to just shake his head like that with his eyes closed in a middle of a fight, and well within your kicking range?
Thought I just clear this up, not all cage fighters are these fighters that fight for these big organizations like, UFC, Pride, Affliction, etc. Lots of small towns have their own little cage fighting organizations in their community. Not to mention there are alot of fight clubs everywhere. There's probably one near your home as well.
You're welcome. You won't find the song online. "Goodbye Kelly" was my band in college. We never found a distributor for our CD. I use my songs in a number of the videos I've posted.
There are five aerial techniques that I use regularly in combat sports, including MMA: The flying side kick, the flying knee, the tornado kick, the hopping back kick, and jumping front kick from an outside clinch.
While most people are not proficient enough kickers to pull those off successfully in competition, I believe that each of those techniques is viable and practical. Like all techniques, it is a matter of practice against live opponents.
I take Chung Do Kwan, and while we do practice jumping/flying kicks from time to time, my instructors have been very clear that aerial techniques are mostly useless in real life (street). Anyone with any amount of skill is going to move to the side, and while your in the air grab your leg and throw you to the ground.

Good tutorial, after watching this and practicing I can do it now. Haha, and I love the blood mist when the stick guy gets kicked.
Also, a question comes to mind. Someone asked earlier if this could be used in mma. I thought about it and realized I've never even seen regular side kicks in mma and wondered...why? A good sidekick to the gut or solar plex could do a lot of damage, yet I've only seen mma fighters using thai kicks, straight thrusts, or sometimes spinning heel kicks.
you want to see gd side kicks in MMA just look at the undefeated Strikeforce middle weight champion Cung Le he is a blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do and Sanda/San Shou with a wrestling background and my fav fighter, i even made a highlight of his last 3 fights.
I've both used and been hit by side kicks in MMA. One of my opponents used the side kick very effectively as a counter to a roundhouse kick. Also, if you miss with a round kick, you can follow it up with a side kick with the same leg, which basically works like a jab to keep your opponent at a distance before he can counter. A lot of people say kicks like that compromise balance, but in my opinion it's only a compromise if you're not a skilled kicker.
After posting the comment I've looked it up and seen some good examples (including Cung Le). The only MMA I usually see on tv is UFC, and i seldom see sidekicks used there for some reason, so I guess I assumed the same for all MMA. Maybe it's time I broaden my horizons and watch other organizations as well.
Hey Ramsey, who's some of your favorite MMA fighters? I personaly always enjoyed Randy Couture, Liddell, and I really like Diego Sanchez. P.S Whats your pro MMA record?
BJ Penn, John Lewis (back when he was still fighting), Georges St. Pierre, Fedor Emilanenko, Anderson Silva, Genki Sudo, Hank Weiss, Jeremy Horn, Demarques Johnson, Wanderlei Silva, Quentin Jackson, also Couture and Liddell... this list could go on and on you know.
good vid, i never thought about the practical application for flying sidekick, i always thought about just using it for demos, so i never took it seriously (or at least as serious as the basics).
Never ignore the basics. Everything else is based off of them. For example, you can't master the flying side kick until you've mastered the side kick. This isn't going to be a "bread & butter" move in TKD, but when used properly, it can be a devastating addition to your arsenal.
My favorite KO to this day came from a flying side kick aimed at my opponent's chest. He saw me jump, he ducked, I nailed him in the head. I wish I had that on film.
When i talk about basics i also mean upper body basics (like poomse/forms/patterns/kata). There's many blocks and stances as well just like Karate so why don't people treat TKD like Karate? There's so many different blocks and strikes that aren't kicks. You only look at the sparring aspect of martial arts, and it's really the instructors fault for turning Tae Kwon Do into a kicking sport VS. just fighting. I love your intro BTW.
If you posted any comments on my grappling dummy video, I had to take down the video and repost it. Sadly, the comments were deleted with the original video. Other than that, I haven't deleted any comments.
You make some good points. Technically, TKD and karate are the same punches kicks and blocks. When they become sports, the strategy changes depending on the rules.
Thanks for the reply. Sometimes i get a little annoyed when my instructor teaches a class with only kicking, not that i'm bad at it it's just i feel like alot of it can be unrealistic such as the double roundhouse kick. Also I think that because the martial art has become an olympic sport it's lost its martial artness and was turned into a sport but luckily there are still good schools they're just hard to find.
I think all three aspects are important. Combat sports, while not always based in reality, give experience against live, resisting opponents. Real fighting is practical. And art is what makes us human.
Trigger movements.

Hi Ramsey,
would you recommend the use of the flying side kick in an MMA match?
Raphneckone 3 years ago
I have yet to try it in an MMA match. Mostly because most of my MMA fights have ended up as clinch battles and submission fights on the ground.
I have seen a few fighters try a flying side kick in MMA, but they all made the mistake of aiming high, their opponents just ducked.
Like any technique, however, if you have an opening, use it- but aim low.
