In what universe is Toby Stevens performance remotely comparable to that of Timothy Dalton's! There is no doubt that the best ever Rochester is Timothy Dalton. No no one can fly of the handle and then pose such restraint as he can
phew....i really didn't know that there were that many adaptations. the most important question is, however, where's MY Rochester? I will buy a ticked to England today! I wish that there were still men that noticed settled nuances, instead of obsess over not so settled obscenity.
the ones you missed out on well don't worry too much about it as the
1949 Charlton Heston this moved me to tears and not for the right reasons
1973 bbc series.... my advice don't watch it
1930's version the worst by far and i don't know who's in it (you tube it)
1970 George C. Scott not bad
toby stevens has to be the best and this is from a long time jane eyre fan, had tim dalton in the lead for years, even though i hated the leading lady in his version.. but your right tobys number 1 :)
Timothy Dalton was good obviously, but WAY to gorgeous and chiselled and perfect-looking - not to mention rather camp...... I haven't seen the 2011 version, but so far, Toby Stephens has got his portrayal the closest to the book - absolutely superb acting... not to mention sexy ;) x
Stephens' Rochester was not totally true to the character - more a kind of man that would apply to modern ideals. Brontë did her best in challenging the standards of her own time but she could not forsee that all the Victorian ideas about what a man or a woman "is" would be soo changed. But his performance was gorgeous. I believed in every word and every expression ^_^
Dalton was funny and Hurt was moving but even less true to character.
Yay for Orson Wells being mentioned! I really liked his performance, but Joan Fontaine was better in "Rebecca". It's odd since it's such a similiar role. Timothy Dalton is my personal favorite as is Zelah Clark as Jane but I totally understand your ranking of Toby as number 1. I also love William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg Hurt played a very realistic less gothic romantic Rochester. It was so easy to see his Rochester existing even today. Thanks for sharing!!
We need to make a new ranking list. JE 2011 has been released with Fassbender as Mr. Rochester.
TO me, Tim is the best Rochester, second is cutie Fassy. Toby's appearance is not suitable, honestly. His performance is fine but not his look. The others... no comment!
you´re right with tobys looking. But he gives such an emotional performance, i think he suits perfectly because he just can show Rochesters carecer soo well.
Like in the scene where Jane is coming back to him...he played it sooo gorgeous!
@windy2610 Yeah I prefer Tim Dalton too as he was the right age and had the dark look (I don't find him that good looking tbh) about him, he also did Healthcliff in of Wutherheights back in the 70s pulled that off really well. Toby was too young same with the new guy he is only 34. But as far as Jane's go Zelah Clarke and Mia Wasikowska (even though the movie cut out so much of the story) both can look plain as day the others were too pretty to play Jane as she was "Plain Jane".
Pozdrawiam Was serdeczne dziewczyny:))
Wspaniały przegląd aktorów odgrywających role Pana Rochestera. Ale jest tylko jeden - number one. Dla mnie nikt nie zagrał tego lepiej niż Toby. Taki Rochester jak on to marzenie...................................
TOBY IS THE BEST ROCHESTER EVER AND THE SEXIEST I CAN WATCH HIM EVERYDAY

Please give Michael Jayston from the 73 version a chance...he's definitely better than Hinds and Hurt. If you haven't seen it, give him a try.

Hinds... bleh! He turned Jane into a victim.
