Heard this morning on the radio. I had forgotten how much I really appreciate this song. I like how it goes soft to hard, back to soft sound again. It's this era of experimentation that is rather lacking in much of today's music that makes Led Zeppelin so iconic.

I think this might be the greatest guitar solo. It's not overly complicated, but it builds both in dynamics and by gradually raising pitch. It's effective. I've heard it a million times, and yet I sing along to it every time. To say it's brilliant is an understatement. It's one of those artistic creations that inspires and invigorates. The production makes liberal use of stereo as the guitars pan back and forth between channels. The vocals were phased during Robert Plant's screaming part.

This was one of Plant's first songs recorded by the band, and also marks the first appearance of drummer John Bonham's Chinese gong, which he set up as part of his drum kit in concerts. The gong appears in the middle part among Jimmy Page's guitar riffs.

Led Zeppelin played this live from 1969 to 1972.
