  • its not racial????? The man in the white suit is Fab Five Freddie!!! YO! MTV RAPS!

please stop pulling the race card it is 2010!

  • Okay everyone is arguing wether this is the first rap song, Yes!!! it is the first rap song ever released, NO!!!! the word rap does not come from this song and people were rapping before blondie she didnt create rap! she pays homage in the song to people before her if you listen and know your history, fab five freddie, grand master flash, "flash is fast flash is cool" it was the first rap song on an actual cd or video and the first #1 rap song ever on radio.

    any more questions?

  • sorry but this was the first 1# rap song, that said no it was not the first rap song on wax but neither was the rappers delight. You have to flash back way before that to "hot rod lincoln" Yeah it was by a white guy and you would have heard it on the c&w stations

  • glen o brien

    tv party

    rules

  • hip hop and graffitti was a kids thing in the 70s in brooklyn i was part of that seen, way before this song came out snake 1 ssb aka krazy snake

  • I don't care who said what... she DID have the first rap song... I don't ever remember anything before that and I'm over 50 nigga!

  • @BlizzDawg

There have been a lot of rap songs released before this. you don't remember because most rap was played on R & B/urban stations. judging by your comment, you probably were listening to Country & Western stations

  • I don't care who said what... she DID have the first rap song... I don't ever remember anything bvefore that and I'm over 50 nigga!

  • AS MUCH AS EVER ONE WANTS TO THINK BLONDE DID NOT HAVE THE VERY FIRST " RAP " SONG GOT TO GO BACK TO A YEAR OR SO TO " RAPPERS DELIGHT " WE SKATED TO THAT AT USA SKATE WAY , YES AT 50 I STILL CAN SKATE AND SHOOT THE DUST WITH THE YOUNG ONES!!

  • didnt believe it when i first heard it

  • TV PARTY glen o brien

    NETFLIX

  • everybody check out the video "TV PARTY N.Y."

    hijamecanica account

  • FAB FIVE FREDDIE WAS INVOLVED IN BLONDIE TECHNICALLY. as a youngster he was a part of the "Glen O'Brien's TV PARTY" Crew, also co host was Blondies guitar player. ALL ON NETFLIX, "TV PARTY" also debbie was involved. Wanna see a YOUNG NON PERFORMING TOTALLY "non-selfconciousness" (i forgot the word and spelling) being herself Debbie Harry on the show. Demonstrating the pogo, a terrible THE TIDE IS HIGH. Debbie is in the TV PARTY documentary... ALL ON NETFLIX INCLUDING "DOWNTOWN 81"

  • @agooTV

from the same soundtrack what about that other song "Wake Up N****s" by The Last Poets

    it was kinda rap

  • 3:39 GLEN O BRIEN "TV PARTY" also this may have been the first RAP video on mtv, technically. Not the first RAP song, but the first Rap video on MTV. Unlike most of you, I have the strangestr most bizarre memories from childhood because of this song. It is a story unlike anything you have ever heard (or read). A childhood friend was obsessed with this (in elementary school) because of "Man From Mars Is Eating Cars" also look up online "Glen O'Brien's TV PARTY "

  • Lol, wow

Why do whites alway try to steal Blak people music

First they stole Rock now the say this white bitch was the first rapper lol

    Im speechless

  • Comment removed

  • I'm going to catch alot of shit over this.... This video is racist.... Look how the black man is dancing, like black people were portrayed in the old times dancing in the fields. Notice the young black ladies dressed in white dancing. "House girls".

  • certainly the frist rap song by a female singer!

  • why is there even a discussion about if... of course it was the first rap, the word rap comes from this song.... 'rap'ture... ...cainers :)

  • @PSUDONYMOUS "rap" comes from before this, when people were doin it in abandoned ware houses, and irap stands for "Rhythm And Poetry".. this is the first widely known rap song... but yeah she prolly got told about what was goin on, and did it first..

  • Blondie was the 1st to hit #1 with a rap song ever and if it wasn't for this song rap would not be what it is today!

  • Other than Rapper's Delight, which was a minor hit in the US, I was not aware that rap was that "hot" at the time. Not the first rap song (the lyrics even mention Grandmaster Flash) but an early and certainly very successful example. Rapture is in the end a very good song, but you see the kind of sensitivities that make people want to detract from it. And the ever expanding definition of rap/hip hop gets boring. Any song with rythming is not rap.

  • Cool Herc invented Hip hop

  • blondies cool

  • The debate of the first RAP song continues:

The first rap song that was ever recorded was 'Kinesiska Muren' With Swedish artist Evert Taube which was recorded in the 1920's.

Also consider: "Hot Rod Lincoln" written in 1955 recorded in 1955 by Charlie Ryan

First Modern day that most RAPPERS would consider RAP is probably: Rapper's Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang.

    The debate goes on...

I love Blondie's RAP, evene with the crazy 'Girlie' lyrics:^).

  • There is no debate among the asked!

  • 1st rap was rappers delight-- first

  • Not the first rap song

the first rap attempt by a white person tho.

not a fan of rap tbh, only know that because im currently workin on a huge essay on the development music in the last Century. interesting times :)

  • ah, yes.... this is totally the first rap song ever. it took me a second try to figure this out.

  • He will explain exactly how ignorant you and people like you sound like when they say stuff like like. Look at how many English people live in South America. Couldn't they have done the same? Dumbshit....

  • Ok to comment on the "1st Rap song" part, I think it was Tina Marie's Square Biz. And to comment on KoolMintable's Nasty Racist comment, Nobody had sex with a monkey you "Unkool Urinal mint" AIDS was started by the Government to control the Population You need to watch some stand up comedy from Dave Chappelle.

  • dis wasnt da 1st rap song u asshat it wuz da 2nd

  • Blondie didn't intro rap, she just brought it to the white ppl.........anywho.........the times she was hanging at cbgbs and basquiat stood in........classic moment in time.

  • But Blondie did have the 1st #1 rap song.....

  • @Tim777G , "the first white person to rap in a contemporary song" not that she had the first intentional rap song. That title goes to the Sugar Hill Gang - Rappers Delight.

  • @Tim777G

was this song a #1 hit? I need to read the book again. ALSO BACK WHEN THIS WAS A HIT, WERE THERE ANY WHITE RAPPERS?!?!?!

and you all know that MTV claimed they cant air black videos back in the beginning...

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen

I don't have to read a book to know, I a big Blondie fan and I know and remember that it hit #1 for 2 weeks, and at that time they was not any white rappers...

Rap was around, but no rap song did what this song did at that time. It was the 1st #1 rap song ever and by a white band, that was unheard of back then. Blondie broke a lot of ground back in 1981 with this song and it still played in clubs, video shows. Its also was 1st #1 from a punk band. They sit the tone 4 rap

  • @Tim777G more details in billboard of #1 hits. also have you notice the lurics? TV PARTY was name checked in here. Look up TV Party was a cable access TV show in New York City that ran from 1978 to 1982. Glenn O'Brien was the host. Chris Stein, co-founder of the pop band Blondie, was the co-host and Walter "Doc" Steding was the leader of the TV Party orchestra. Amos Poe was the director. ..A documentary by Danny Vinik was also created about the TV show.

    ON DVD

  • @Tim777G

Listen to Ball of Confusion by The Temptations

  • True. Rap nowadays doesn't make a lot of sense either. This was in my opinion, TERRIBLE and so is the gangsta bs of today. Music should either tell a story or make you concentrate on an emotion. This song just makes me say WTF!

  • definetly no tthe "first rap song"

  • Debbie Harry is the best rapper in the world, all the others are just 'wack'

  • This is the first rap song to go to #1 in the USA! Beat that!

  • Usa 4 life

  • How about "Trouble" by Elvis? What's the definition of "rap"?

  • This was one of the 1st "commercially successful" rap songs and came out in the time when Grandmaster Flash & the 3 MCs (Superrappin) and The Sugar Hill Gang were gaining success (Rapper's Delight). It was definitely not the first rap song as "rap" is defined as "spoken word over African drum beats" and had made its American appearance in Brooklyn's poetry houses beginning in 1956.

  • yessir

  • In any case, the first "rap" song by a white artist was Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues"!!!!!!!!!! (1965)

  • White folk dancing is surreal enough, but then they up the ante . . . maybe the protestants had it right Xb

  • she was hot in her old god days.....fucking time don´t waits for anyone

  • Hip hop used to have a sense of fun anyway

  • this isnt the first rap song...

  • this is the first rap song... fact... you guys don't like the truth because she's white...

  • Even though I'm a fan of Blondie, you have to notice that Debbie refers to Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash, both hip-hop artists who were already doing their thing. She didn't mention them because she was the first one to teach them how to rap, but rather, because they were already somewhat established on the rap scene.

  • hahhahah (: thats funny lol .

  • Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "Supperrappin," 1979.

The Sugar Hill Gang, "Rapper's Delight," 1979, and then "Freedom," 1980.

    Blondie, "Rapture," 1981.

If you want to talk about rap history before rap songs were recorded, Blondie did not form as a group until 1975, but rap was already happening in clubs and house parties in NY and other cities during the early '70s.

    .

  • vince is 100% right. blondie may have helped popularize rap in the mainstream, but she sure the HELL didnt make the first rap song. If you think that, and go around saying that, you are embarassing yourself.

  • Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" predates Blondie and is pretty close to rap - so close that Run DMC sampled it! "Walk This Way" is 1975.

  • Cnce upon a time no one gave a shit about delivery, when it came to love, music, unity and having fun. Blondie was the prototype of the Wild Style blond lady, Grandmaster Flash respected her, so everyone should: respect the architect!

It's not the first rap song, though!!!!

  • this isnt the first rap song.. lol its the first time a rap was performed on a music video check out krs one -step into a world this is sampled

  • get your fact straight.. debbie was doin this shit in the 70's.. there was no RAP til way after blondie!! dah!

  • GET UR FACT STRAIGHT STEVE. rap started in the 70s dah "steve" dah !!!!lol. Just playn. But NO serioulsly, rap started in the 70s.

  • Blondie started rap! Go white girl!! :o)

  • The Sugar Hill Gang started rap in 1979...

  • that was painful

  • Its not Rap but she starts rapping...

  • Got some news y'all. that's RAP. Might not be very good but all aspects of rap are in this. I know it hurt to know a White girl started rap...LOL

  • Ummmm... get your facts straight. Rap has happened way bofore blondie did it... she was simply part of the movement...

  • maybe the right subtitles is Rapture the first rap-song at n. 1 in the official charts.

  • Comment removed

  • I dont think Debbie was the first person to ever rap... But this was the first commercially successful song with a rap in it.

  • You must not have been paying attention then because the culture started with the emceeing and deejaying at parties in the early seventies. When did you think the "hip-hop" culture started? Fifteen years ago with Biggie and Tupac? Come on man.

  • First rapper, Second rapper huh we still pist about this! may god bless you for even caring! check my channel. PEACE.

  • So the first rapper was actually a White girl? Well, that should please Anne Hathaway and Kendra Wilkinson to no end, I suppose.

  • rap started in jamaica early 60's look for sir lord comic.

  • tim king even came out after this this was aired in 76 blondys the shit

  • I saw her do this song on t.v. probably late seventies. She explained about the rap stating its a new form of music developing. She was the first major artist I heard rap but I would'nt say she was a rap pioneer.

  • not first rap song first white rap artist..very surprising from rock group..but thats how it has always been a part of hip hop culture..sequence featured the now very succesful angie stone..

  • show me an older rap song then dude. wtf are you talkin about ive researched it and this is as old as rap gets as far as being recorded.

  • Haha...um, how about Bowfly with Dirty Rap? Coke la Rock was the first Emcee back in the summer of 73...rapper's delight was released in 79. Late 78 or early 79 the Fatback Band released King Tim III...but you were close dude! Research a little harder next time.

  • lol

  • Blonde is yummy

    great song

  • she is not yummy, she is tasty and sexy in her 60s.

  • damn she was hot back in the day !

  • this is not the first rap song. possibly one of if not the first song with rapping to hit so big and expose alot of people to it. Im glad it was Debra!

  • I have this video from many years ago. I liked Blondie from way back. She was such a hottie and so very talented. I also like her singing Union City Blues and Atomic

  • blonide is hot ! :p

  • I would not call this rap. rap is somthing that makes no sence what so ever.

  • Kids in kindergarten have been "rapping" since the dawn of public education - kids on Sesame Street were doing it while blacks (and suspected blacks) were still riding in the back of buses. Niggas just ain't ever evolved past being little punk ass juveniles. And well, Blondie? The word blonde says it all! LOL!

  • the first female, perhaps even rap ever. fuckin rapture

  • Very doable Debbie here. Major wood attack at 2:10

  • Debbie and Chris got this from a song by a rap band called The Sequence. An all female rap band back in 1979.

Debbie and Chris got inspired because the lead female vocalist called herself Blondie. It was called " Funk You Up"

If you don't believe me ask Debbie and Chris. " Gonna Funk you right on up . Gonna funk you right on up"

  • If you dont know 1% of $hit Wikipedia is probably correct!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The first rap songs were nursery ryhmes!!!

  • Guy in white tux is Jean Michael Basquiat 80's Haitian Born, New York Graffitti artist, Painting &Neo Expressionist AKA SAMO. One of his work sold in 2002 for $3,302,500 @ Christie's

  • Kool

  • the guy in the tux is not basquiat- basquait is the dj, in this vid, much much younger than the dancer in the tux.

  • "rappers delight" by sugar hill gang in 1979 was the 1st rap song. by september '80 the market was flooded. and that's when this song came out

  • But I heard that this was the first rap song played on MTV

  • MTV Hmmm there you have it!

  • it was the first US No1 to feature rap-influenced music

  • here is a fact that very few people know about this video.

the guy in the white tux is flavor flavs father.

  • The guy in the white tux is Jean Michael Basquiat, ( 80's' artist)

  • Basquiat is the DJ

  • Wikipedia it!

  • yea b/c we all know wikipedia pinnacle of accuracy and authenticity...

  • If your accuatly wrong wikipedia is probably right.

  • No . It is not. Nor is the guy on the turntable.

  • As a replacment for Grandmasterflash Jean appeared in this video.

  • I remember seeing --Blondie in concert and Deborah came on stage wearing trash can liners tied with electricians tape ...i miss the old days....

  • Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan was the first rap song ever recorded

  • the word "cars" brought to us by this video

  • krs one?

  • srry not the 1st.that belongs to fatback.

  • everyone knows that "rapture" was the first rap song, but did you also know that it was the first song to use guitars? and that this was the last music video ever made? or that top-hats were invented just so they could appear in this video? now you know!

  • Black people were invented explicitly to appear in this video.

  • lmao

  • plz tell me that ur jokin about the first song to use guitars cuz this was made in 1981, which many bands used guitars in the 70s, if this wasa joke, then u think of shitty jokes

  • of course i'm not joking. neither is OptionallySavage. in fact we were there. we were really on a roll that year. if i'm not mistaken we also invented photosynthesis and sharks.

  • tooo easy... oh, and thanks for armadillos... :)~~~

  • For some reason the chimes in this reminds me of ending theme song of Sesame Street.

(In the voice of Grover) "Blondie was brought to you by, the letter B."

  • cool song

  • in fact, the first rap song that i know of was in the 1930's with george burns and someone else. i can't remember. well, i wasn't there. but, its on a radio broadcast of maybe your show of shows. i hafta look for it now.

  • Oh c'mon people, it was the first 'rap' song to chart... Fab Five Freddy existed before the song.

She did good though, it certainly didn't hurt the cause....

  • Gotta love Debra Harry!

  • Debbie H. is an O.G.

  • Massively ridiculous video, but what a cool, pioneering song... Blondie is great and Deborah, well, she was a hottie indeed.

  • brava anche nel rap

  • @bc2358:

Taken from wikipedia: "... the rap-flavored "Rapture", which was the first song containing elements of hip-hop and rap vocals to reach number one in the U.S. ..."

  • billboard ratings mean nothing

  • Go in blondie!!! 16 bars of fire

  • Blondie rulz!

  • HEY LOOKS ITS FLAVOR FLAV LOL.

  • Thought this was so freaking wierd when it first came out wayyy back when...now it just cracks me up..makes me think of putting a nightmare to music for some reason

  • this song was the shit back in the day i wish i could go back in time for one day

  • ohhhno .....i hate to say that but the musik rape s my ears !!!

  • you na simna sim are an ignorant ass to call a race a bad derogotory name.

  • at 3:20 a ballerina and a mountain goat.. very lovely...

  • omg! I LOVE THIS SONG! i remember listening to this growing up!

    great song!

  • no, rap has it's roots in jamaican music. jamaican's were using turn tables and dj's. DJ Kool Herc was from Jamaica and he introduced Jamiacan music to the Bronx. This is how rap started.

  • ya'll need to check out King Tim III- fatback Band. This was the first mainstream rap song. You can date it back before Deb Harry and Sugarhill Gang. Check it.

  • Rap is generally recognised as beginning with the legendary Chicago bluesman Andre Williams 1957 single "Bacon Fat"

It is of no relevance, but he is black.

  • get a clue. the significance of this video lies in the fact that this was one of, if not the first time graffiti was shown in a music video. anyone who thinks this is the first rap song should be shot, and anyone who doesn't know who LEE is, should also be shot.

  • so does this mean that rap was created by whites???? then history is wrong.

  • oribably blondie didn´t had the idea... for sure

  • the first time i heard this it was a snippet and it sounded hot but after listening to the whole vid it really isnt that good but i still love blondie and it was a cool vid just not the lyrics

  • it wasn't the first rap song at all - but it WAS the first rap music VIDEO. At the time rap was mostly underground or "indie" for all the kids. But surprise surprise only white artists had the budget to produce music videos at the time... fab five freddy cameos, and lyrics reference grandmaster flash. not the first rap song, but maybe the first commercially successful rap single.

  • Gahahaha. First rap song my ass. I suppose nobody remembers rappers delight? Rapping comes from the 'slave times, when the slaves made rhymes.'

  • This is the 2nd ever rap song as any fule kno. The first woz by fab five freddy who she rpas about in the rap part of this rap.

  • This is not the first Rap song ever produced..But Maybe the first one that was done by an 'white' artist, but not the first rap song ever to be produced.

  • is it called rap beacuse this song is called rapture?

  • wow Debbie Harry invented rap music!!

  • I love blondie and Debbie Harry, but all I can say about this song is LMAO!

  • to bad blondie wasnt a rapper mmmmmm.

  • She was Rappin before most of you were even thought of!!!!!

  • blondie invented rap, duh.

  • fuck nas,biggie , or any other mc....blondie is tight.ha ha

  • lol. possibly the first rap song.

  • I just love the sound of the chimes in this song (lots of them throughout the song) and everything else about it....beat, music, rhythm....and the way Deborah sings it. Also think Clem looks great with the dark beard!

  • They introduced "rap" music to a much wider audience. In California, this was the first "Rap" video I ever saw. I did not pay attention to it. When this song broke Rock was still dominant.

  • how could blondie make the first rap song when rapture was released in 1981 and the roots of rap extend as far back as the early 1970's when the leaders of the old school were doing their thing.

rappers delight by sugarhill gang was the first rap song to hit the mainstream and it hit in 1979, a whole 2 years before blondie's rapture.

  • the way i heard it is that this was THE 1st rap song . however,i think that music initself is too broad in the sense that BLondie was probably influenced by some other band or person she knew or seen at the time. so maybe its safer to say that rap possibly originated in the NY area around this time....we wont really know for sure....

  • Stop fighting YouTubers. It's Blondie. The Music is Great. What more could you want???
