I never really thought about getting licensing for music that is playing in the background, such as in a bar scene, but I guess it makes sense. It is kind of like product placement in films. Like a refrigerator full of Coca Cola or scenes taking place in a Starbucks. Although, in product placement, it is usually the other way around, in terms of who gets paid.
Any changes to a script can change the timing of the scene and in turn change the feel of the music playing. this can create major headaches for the composer, in an attempt to reconsturct the scene. A good example is in the film Farris Buelers day off, in the scene during the parade when he sings the beetles shack it up baby.
Music, artistic flare, and acting should be first and foremost something you want to do and something you love to do rather, than something you have to do or else you won't get payed.
You wouldnt really think of all of the problems that would exist in something as simple as changing a character from an actor to an actor/singer. Amazing!
I can't believe there is so much legality that goes into the songs put in movies. You almost think that if you could find up and coming artist that they would want to pay you to put their music in a film for the exposure.
I agree with Izumikage. Being a good composer has lot of benefits for the job . LIve concerts sell out and movies or video games go crazy for your music in their scenes
It is ridiculous how everyone's trying to get their money's worth over some stupid copyright issue. I agree with theabnormalalli: more people should care about the PASSION instead of the money! Personally as a vocal performance major, I don't care how much money I'll be making. As long as I'm happy, that's all that matters.
There needs to be a balance. I see nothing wrong with musicians making money from their art. But the art/music should come first. I know as a writer/filmmaker that the stuff I enjoy making often does better than the stuff I try to make for other people. Being true to ourselves and our art form will always make us more satisfied at the end of the day and others often like it too.
A chef ceases to see the beauty in his dish after the thousandth time cooking it. A counselor becomes desensitized to his clients after thousands walk in and out of his office. It's business. You can't expect anyone to retain that initial passion forever.
I do feel the legal aspect is ridiculous. If people reffered to my work, I'd be flattered.
Imagine all the people, sharing their art as one...
"ALL THEY SEE IS DOLLAR SIGNS AND NO MUSIC NOTES" . . . Why is it that these 3 "talkin heads" have no emotion what so ever when explaining the music that they listen to all day and dedicate countless hours on making decisions as to what music best fits a certain scene which feeds off of the audiences emotion when presented in a theater?

It's interesting to see how they correlate the music with the script.

There is a lot of money that goes into a movie that people are not aware of.

Choosing actors and music for a film seems like a stressful job.

The term music driven certainly shows the importance of scoring and songs in film.
