love that brother! not only because he he speaks truth with the word but because he is transparent and that saves many from making the same mistake. too many Christians are not as humble to show their true struggles.
see..now, i have to get up, & go do what i meant to do this morning.. this was a great video.. i will revisit, to repromand myself again, via this..heehehe..ok..really about to save this...(oh..wait..first let me check my Facebook once again..lol)
Wow, I could really relate to this. I always knew I spent too much time on the internet, like many of us know about themselves, but these last couple of days I just became a little more aware of it than usual, and now I come across this video. Amazing! It's like God wanted me to see this. Wow! .... you know what, I plan to do what I am supposed to do and not waste my time any longer. Thank you! :)
Although slightly humorous at first, his long running joke on the distractions was unnecessary. Although funny, this isn't the type of venue to dedicate so much time to a joke. Its a friggin church, wisdom, important knowledge, etc. (to be more approachable, let me say that this was a interesting video that im glad i favorited)
@V0r You have a point. However this is not making jokes just for kicks and laughs. This is much needed to get through to the people of this age. You need to make people relate to what you're talking about or else everybody's mind will wander miles away from what you're saying.
In 1 Corinthians Paul said: 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 2
2 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
Thank you for being so honest about your wrestling for self-control in relation to the internet and all that new media. It's encouraging me for being honest myself in this area of my life. Lord, make us radical in not wasting our time on the internet!
I'm not a fan of Joshua Harris for certain reasons, but this is absolutely true. I would offer a modification to his sermon to make it applicable to everyone. Some things are spiritual without seeming "spiritual." Distraction is a great spiritual issue of our day -- focusing on a homework assignment, or studying for a test, or working on a project at work, distraction can be a form of procrastination that is indeed spiritual: we are avoiding the work God Himself has set before us ( = growth).
I'm pretty sure he's talking about self-control when we need to work. I think he's basically saying, leisure's not bad, but know when it's time to work and when it's time for rest, and be disciplined in adhering to that.
The way this is slightly hypocritical. It's on the internet and when I should have been studying, I was watching this video. (?) Other than that, this bloke's a rather good preacher
When a person is sleepy it is a natural, physiological process to fall asleep having nothing to do with a lack of self-control. The sluggard is lazy and does not need to sleep but chooses to sleep rather than work, which leads to financial poverty. The "spiritual" application of this concept is that a lazy person who does not take time to learn, or be taught God's Word remains spiritually poor.
Hey Stephaniedrury have you had a chance to check out the WHOLE sermon? Josh Harris is incredibly cross centred in his sermons. This is only a short clip...God bless you in your cross centred desire.
This is frustrating. Jesus didn't need to die in order for this sermon to be preached, so it's not a Christian sermon. It is just a motivational speaking thing. It has nothing to do with Jesus and his grace. Makes me really upset when people mix the two.
I agree with you in some regards... in others not...
Any "Christian" speaker is obligated to preach the entire Bible - obviously not in one sermon - but we must view it as a whole. For that reason, Jesus' death on the cross + his grace are absolutely vital.
However, much of the Bible is not directly pertaining to that, but more to what I'll call "Christian Living" which I view as being the same as Christian "Motivational Speaking."
Wow, that struck a little close to home! Gosh! I was having this very conversation with my dad the other night... I think that God is trying to tell me something.... I gotta think about this furter
[3] the real issue here is not so much on self-control, but on discernment. human beings should be able to use this god-given talent of discernment and discerning, of making moral choices, of choosing the one that is beneficial rather than destructing humankind, the one that is pleasing in the eyes of god (as human beings thought it to be).
[2] surely, if the bible was written at this information age, the language would have been tech-filled. the authors would have written something like, "in the beginning was the word, and the word was tweeted..." or "when adam and eve disobeyed him, god removed them from his facebook..." nyahaha...
[1] all these advancements in information technology are a gift from god, a product of god-given talents, of man's ingenuity. these should not be seen in a negative way -- as a distraction -- but should be used in a positive, fruitful way (in the same manner that this "preaching" is uploaded on youtube or linked on facebook).
Emmanueldispo: Hey there, I agree with your opinions from what I read so far. I just wanted to tell you that we, in our deep reverence to our Lord, should always capitalize the first letter of God. His name should be treated with importance and should be typed/written properly. Exodus 20: 7a "You shall not make wrongful use of the Lord your God..."
putting it in the light of scripture (supplementing the modern words in the Proverbs text) really drives it home. I think most of us are at least somewhat aware of how the internet/computers waste our time, but I think Joshua did a really good job exposing Satan's plan. [AND our irresponsibility/sin/susceptibility.]
Wow, that's true!!! Seriously!!! Thanks God for Joshua's life and ministry. May the Lord keep him in the right way for teaching the true of the gospel to this generation
It's like watching myself in a mirror, he is so right! I really wanted to hear the next part about what does the word of God say about self-control and time :(
You can listen to the entire sermon on his website! Youtube apparently doesn't allow links on comments, but if you click on over to his channel, you'll see the link to his website. :)
Thats crazy because I do the same thing! Like once I check my facebook its a rap I be stuck lookin up other things that jus kill precious time! Its also crazy because I jus set some goals and one of the goes was to limit the time I stay on the internet so to watch this vid is a blessin!
