Sorry, without seeing him it would be hard to give specific help. In general, he should aim for very good long term sugar control and see a specialist for his eyes.
Yes. Over the last decade my patients seem to understand that phrase better than "sub-optimal" control. The less we disguise our medical terminology the better the response from the intended audience!
