so articulate in her phrasing and pipes that gave her a sound like NO BODY ELSE. I love her voice - did she every sing with Billy Eckstine? I don't know why I'm thinking there was a song they did together? Perhaps I dreamed it? Thank you Scout4Me, for this and other Dinah Gems.
I had been listening to Nancy Wilson a lot & saw the movie "The Tempest". They played this version of "Manhattan" at the end of the movie & I was blown away. Needless to say Dinah must have been one of Nancy's biggest influences. I love Jazz singers who don't do all of the bebop scatting kind of stuff. Ella being the exception to that!
@Slamule, I've loved this song ever since that movie. It's been so long since I've seen it but remember thinking at first it didn't fit but was completely enthralled by it all the same.
@09beegee I really shouldn't be judgmental about people I haven't listened to that much but from what I have heard I wasn't crazy about them, sorry. When people put lyrics to famous instrumental solos sometimes I find that hard to listen to. The exception to that would be "Moody's Mood for Love".
Discovered Dinah when I was 16, while hanging out at the local jazz station in flint, Mi in 1966. "Barlow" on WGMZ from 12M-3am. What a musical education!
Just like her version of 'September in the Rain', the arrangement and vocal phrasing are in perfect unison. Absolute brilliance. Great feeling. The final 'a boy and goil' is the golden salute to New York. What a talent that woman was!
Why would anyone say she is underrated? It is almost 50 years since she died and she is still known and listened too. That is a pretty good rating to my mind. I first heard her in 1950 and am still thrilled every time I hear her voice.
@navigator1944 most singers with her talent would have had bigger hits, made more money..and she always had to stay in black hotels when she travelled
Oh Dinah. So lovely. Every generation has to appreciate a woman as talentated as this. The simple pleasures of the 50s: eating a baloney sandwich and riding the subway.
He is right. Growing up in the 60's was great! These days, i can't even sleep, and it really doesn't look like the kids these days have so much fun either
I love NY, but it will never be the same.
I like the music of today, but when I hear something like this, it makes todays music sound like crap.
It's almost 5 AM and for some reason I can't sleep. this song had just popped into my head. Yes, my mom used to play it just strolling around the house in Brooklyn like she didn't have a care in the world. A single mom with 5 kids. An easier time.
Just kickin it here with a cigarette and a Cutty on the rocks listening to this. Takes me back to my childhood with my Dad and Uncles hearing these records in the back yard, playing poker and me and my brothers wrestling in the backyard. I pass by that house now which we had immaculate and it looks like a third world ghetto now and breaks my heart. No one speaks english there anymore
