So sad. worse probably than the 10,000 who cheered them on from inside (but only by a margin). listen to Space, from the monitor-SBD on the archive (gd1995-07-02DOTmonitor-sbdDOTunknownDOT74201DOTsbeokDOTflac16) it's sad, 17 years later to hear Jerry say (DURING SPACE) Jerry: "there's a riot going on that side, there's no need to drag this on, let's get out of here"). [sigh] Summer Fades and Roses die, Darkness falls and Seasons change (but we will see summer come again!!)
I remember this show, I didn't get a ticket, but theres no way in hell I would've done that stupid shit. Then St Louis, then Soldier field in Chicago. By the end of tour you could feel something was wrong.
I was there, too, and truthfully it seemed more like police incited crap than disrespectful fans. We were admittedly inside at the show, but talked to a whole lot of people that saw how it played out. They let the dogs go on the crowd and then started dropping tear gas. The gate crashers were just trying to get away from the dogs and gas.
I stood in the same spot for about 3 hours. All the people rushed up around me, then all rushed back. Funny as hell, then for the next 2 hours a non stop stream of law enforcement entered the parking area with their sirens on hundreds of cops and cars. Trip. They did same thing in st. louis too, its because jerry was dying.
I watched whole thing from lot. The fans that planned this were core deadheads. They sent a few people up one side of the hill, stage left. The police and dogs all ran over there. Then a whole bunch of people ran up the other side. Well orchestrated, the crowd knew jerry was ill.
I saw this happen- it started when a guy ran for the fence, and the cops sicced their dog on him; even after they pulled him down, they let the dog continue biting the guy for minutes as he was begging them to pull the dog off. Some other guy yelled, "They can stop one of us, but they can't stop us all!" I went back to where my girl and I were sitting, by the pond; and as I was telling her about what had happened, she pointed and said, "Look!", and we witnessed the sight captured on this video.
My friend and I so dosed out intiated this scene. I recall the intensity of the prana surrounding the entire tour. Their were no words spoken or any predisposition. Walking by the main entrance we turned and looked at each other and just started running towards the Gate. I do not know what happened after.

I'm willing to bet some of those fans that didn't have tickets, or couldn't get them was due to some of the people "there for the party" who actually got tickets. Just saying, whether you like it or not the GD was clearly a party band so to blame it on drugs, or the "party" is dumb. tGD started this party...who's to blame? the crashers? the dealers there who actually got tickets, leaving real fans hanging out to dry? cops? the dead themselves?

i was there... It Sucked to see the gate crashers.. the Dead played an awesome new speedway boogie & they also played its all over now in both sets. ending with Mighty Quinn. a real sad ending to my trip.(thanks to my friend Mike M for the awesome boot of the show.
What assholes!! Why would someone do something so stupid and dangerous!! and the person who posted 5 to 1 isn't fair, I completely agree, however, he shouldn't have been one of those COCK SUCKING MOTHERFUCKERS!!! The people who did this obviously didn't like the band enough to actually buy a ticket. Fuck you! I love you keller williams!!
I went on tour summer of 1989 selling t-shirts in the parking lot hoping for tickets. I made it into one show, at madison square garden. The rest of the time, I was content to sit just outside the walls and listen to the show. There's no reason to be a douche and storm the gate.
I was at this concert- it was my first, and unfortunately, my last Dead show. I didn't know what to expect, didn't know much about the band. However, when I arrived, went through the 'time warp', and experienced the concert, I was hooked. How very saddened I was when, just a few days later, Jerry Garcia died. I am so thankful I had this concert, to say that I was there, at least once. Btw- the concert was amazing!
I wasn't at this show, but I was at deer creek a few years before. I didn't have a ticket, but this girl I was traveling with did. She told me I should walk up to the gate and just before they asked for my ticket push them aside and run into the crowd. I'm like no-way, why would I rip off the band like that. At the time I dismissed her attitude but after the 95' shows I remember thinking what a bitch she was.. After that tour I always had a ticket for the shows I went to. gate crashers suck.
Okay for all you ppl who weren't on the other side of the fence you didnt see the 5 security guards beat the guy who was trying to get in for free with bats and then continue to drag him from their golf cart! That Riot was about the violence! 5 on 1 NOT FAIR and draggin him from the CART unethical! I was there!
I would've just sat by the fence and enjoyed the music from there if I didn't have a ticket. No need to ruin someone elses good time. Sorry to know it went down like that.
Bunch of "grunge" wannabe alternageeks. Utterly disgusting flash in the pan musical fad. The Dead are timeless - these idiots just wanted to seem cool...but they had no clue what ANY of the scene was about. They should have stuck to pearl jam and left the real bands alone.
it's easy to say 15 years later that all the 'gatecrashers' were a bunch of idiots. not that it was right, there were many, many elements that lead to the storming of the pavilion I was a 'gatecrasher', not proud by any means, but when there's a mob of several thousand people coming your way, and tear gas going off...only 1 thing left 2 do, run up the damn hill! end of the day, in my eyes the police presence and their shitty attitude towards Heads set it all off!
@samvic5150 Stfu you worthless freaking weirdo. Yeah climbing a fence is the only option isn't it? God what a liar do you have a personality disorder or something?? God I hope you die.
wasn't the Phish shows right before the Dead, I remember alot of poeple with Phish shirts on bragging they crashed the gate. I broke my foot in the lot and was sitting in the handicap section, Jerry was singing and looked up and just started shaking his head in disgust. Kuddos to the man for opening with Dire Wolf-Don't murder me with a serious death threat on his head. Nothing against phish fans, thats just what I remember
@philtay I worked concert security for Phish. Nothing about the concert experience the same. NONE OF IT. The crowds were rude and dirty and violent, leaving acres of garbage in their wake. Fights breaking out all over the place. dead heads, at least the old school, had more respect than that.
i was there having the time of my life...until this..fucking greedy fucks...this was a preview to what is wrong with the world today..fuck the people who worked hard to get where they are at...lets just do what we want and take it all away,,,,i will never forget the moments i had..good and bad..oh ya IF YOU WERE A FENCE CRASHER I OWE YOU A PUNCH IN THE FACE!
they didn't mean to fuck shit up they all wanted to get in as bad as everyone else they took it the extreme. i bet they all felt bad after. sucks 2nd set was cancelled
The second set was not canceled... For clarity, the second night at Deercreek was.
It was a shameful night. You could hear just fine outside... there was no reason to charge the hlll like assholes. People flipped the fuck out when they played Dire Wolf in the first set... and that's when it started. I think it was during Desolation Row when it got really bad.
Those fuckers should feel bad.. They even played Attics in the 2nd.
Fucking Scumbags...I remember being right in front of Jerry at a show in Burgettstown, Pa. and folks started pouring in from both sides of the stage...He was PISSED and never really cared about what he was playing from that point on...Like FUCK these assholes, I'm done for the night....Greedy, inconsidorate, morons..
Theres an interesting movie called the "Festival Express'' which featured The Gratefull Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, The Flying Burritos, Delaney & Bonnie and others. The tour was 1970 and the kids didn't want to pay the $14 entry and started a movement to make the shows free like at Woodstock. A highlight in the movie was Jerry Garcia putting on a free show to explain that artists needed to eat too.
ill never forget that night.... wasted but watched it all go down only 3 cops on the hill and like four people went to the side and all the cops had to go to those 4 so all hell broke loose.... down went the orange fence and they were running up the hill. so many cops ended up being there that night on the back hill.. wild night but so much fun. to be 17 again
Yeah - posers like you really contributed so much to the scene. You probably never heard of the dead, listened to them, or could name one song, but you had to try to act cool (no doubt wearing your pearl jam shirt and 'high' from a half a one-hitter toke). God - I just have to congratulate you on being among the most self centered, ignorant, embarrassing followers on the planet. Disgusting.
I was at this show. I was on the other side of the venue when all of this took place. It was a sad, sad day for the Dead and their true FANS when this went down. No REAL Dead Head would have disrespected the band in this way. I never got to see the Dead while Jerry was still alive after this show. Shame on all you dumb, drunken assholes!!
Utterly disgusting human beings. Hope every last one of them burns in hell. I think we can thank the 'grunge' scene idiots for this nonsense. Their meaningful, intelligent 'scene' lasted what - 4 years? Whoo hoo! Way to go guys! I'm sure you never sold out you moronic posers. Sick, sad and disgusting.
are you retarded, wtf does grunge have anything to do with this? lol and as for burning in hell, im sure you have NEVER thought of sneaking into a show or doing anything BAD ever in your life, have you?
Gross I was at this show and it was an ugly scene. The cops by no means helped, not saying the heads shouldn't be held accountable, but is seemed to me that they chased many of the people up that direction with their tear gas.
I don't think it was heads who did it. I think it was fucking asshole poseurs and wannabes too hopped up on some shit they couldn't handle b/c they thought the dead scene was all/only about drugs.
dont those heads know theres PEOPLE on the other side of that fence..leaning against it trying to enjoy the show...buy a freakin ticket!!!! THERELL BE NO MIRACLES HERE!
I was in that chaos, ran up the hill to the fence then turned right back around, I knew better then to take that step but people don't realize that the cops were INSANE at that show, there was nowhere to go except up. they were throwing tear gas into groups with women and children, they were beating the shit out of kidz after being brought down by attack dogs . this thing blew up out of a handful of drunk fucks, arrogant blood thirsty cops and a whole lot of good people caught in the middle.
Ok- you are a LIAR. Cops did not beat women and children you disgusting moron. They reacted to what you simpletons were doing. There was also a death threat against Jerry that night so of course security was ramped up, but I'm sure you didn't know that. You're too busy on your dated 'anti-authority' nonsense to even think clearly. What a piece of garbage you are. Amazing that you have the cranial capacity to use a computer.
Sorry you were in the middle of all that. Im glad you turned back around. I was there too but I was on the other side of the venue. It was a fucked up night for us all. God bless Jerry and The Grateful Dead.
Sorry you had to go thru such a mess. I got gassed in Orlando,FL by Orlando Police in a helicopter hovering Dead Lot Spring Tour '94. I was blissfully playing my guitar with a miracle sign out when I saw a bunch of drunk college jocks stormed the doors to the arena and threw bottles at the responding mounty. Had to run with my guitar case a 1/2 mile and passed out in some grass.Traffic was all backed up.What a bummer scene that turned into. Then Billy's Dad died after watching the news report.
Because you read it in a book its true right? Did you live the time of the dead? I don't think so. You should not be so hasty in dealing out judgment.
The tabloids? are you retarded? listen up you little bitch, search google or wikipedia or whatever your favorite source is and you can read all about the acid tests. Or, there are plenty of actual books written by the musicians and their crew about the copious amounts of lsd that was taken. Granted they accumulated a following of both drug-abusers and non, but the fact is they would NOT have any following without the acid tests. So keep your 15 yo mouth shut, fucking internet anonymous douche.
NO following without LSD huh? Damn you really know what you are talking about. I bet you believe in Sant Claus and the tooth fairy too. You are a real bag of tools dipshit!
lol get over it. What point are you even trying to make? You should try to think of something intelligent to support your case, whatever that may be, instead of just throwing insults...... u fag.
1st- it was the acide testS (plural) 2nd-, one of the best sources about those times is the book called The Electric Koolaid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. If you really want to learn about it, educate yourself (not on stupid wiki, either! sheesh)
The people who jumped the fence that day are pimples on the ass of a maggot eating shit of a dirty animal.
How do you explain the lack of following of other bands that played in the same circles as the dead (new riders, etc). Try thinking a little bit. It won't hurt I promise.
There is no way to know that for sure, but environment is important. I doubt rap would have been popular in the 30's. That has no reflection on peoples' talent.
Regardless, the drugs in the scene helped nurture the community in it's infancy, it brought together people that normally would not interact with each other on such a level. The music was the staying power which grew into the beauty that was the Grateful Dead.......
.......I would kill to have been able to see the dead with Jerry, but have been to hundreds of shows in "the scene" (or at least whats left of it) and there's always a special vibe in the air when any member of the dead takes stage, or any dead song is covered. Regardless of the acid tests, the dead did not play psychedelia exclusively......
.....its a harmonious blend of blues, rock, funk, soul, jazz, country, bluegrass, dance...everything American. they were one of the most important bands in American history. heffdogg...you have to experience music, not read about it in a book. and yes, these people are assholes
I was at this show. I had a ticket was standing agaisnt the wall when all of a sudden I look down and theres all sorts of people crawling through holes in the fence. needless to say the end was near. Think the deal played Dire Wolf right after this but nonetheless they canceled the 2nd night at Deer Creek due to this incident.
No one wants to say it, but the "heads" that did this had the same mentality of the "heads" that ruined the Phish scene. Parking lot kids whose drugs were worth more than the music. There will never be another true Shakedown.
And the best way to show a venue/promoter that your pissed at the high ticket prices is not buy them and not go to the show!!! That's the only way to get thru to greedy music business people sometimes. An empty theater means the venue is doing something wrong!!! Crashes gates=no return show for the band. Which means your pissed next time they don't come to Deer Creek and you want to know why? A sad day indeed.
But the dead has reasonable prices, and you could order directly to avoid TicketBastard. And Jerry died later that Summer, so they didn't go anywhere after St. Louis and Chicago.
douglas that's bullshit. High ticket prices is not an excuse to crash gates. Do you steal from Walmart when they have high prices? Listen to the Keller Williams song "Gate Crashers Suck".
They should have played at the racetrack in Indianapolis where you could fit 100,000 fans and charge an affordable price for the ticket. $50 to $60 per show was outrageous. The cops in the height of the Clinton Police State were more than willing to turn the situation into a riot control atmosphere against their nemesis, the Hippies.
It's funny how nobody brings up the gate crash at Shoreline in August 1991 when they played a first set Dark Star. I guess those broke fans weren't Family.
Worst song I've ever heard Keller sing. Painful era for the band. Vince Welnick was just diagnosed with lung cancer and everybody was worried Jerry was dying, and he sounded like he was sometimes. Jerry couldn't keep & remember his own material anymore on dope. Truly sad to see and it used to bring tears to my eyes to see such true and magnificent talent wasted on a life of drug addiction. Why didn't Keller just go to the next 2 in St.Louis or 2 in Chicago if his show was cancelled? BS song
I was there and what's forgotten about this day, in true Grateful Dead form, was that the band was singing Desolation Row and as soon as they sang -- "and the riot squad they're restless, they need somewhere to go" -- that's when the folks started diving over the fence. I always found that poignant in a way. and there's no doubt the new speedway second set opener was a message. This darkness got to give!
I don't approve of people getting hurt in any circumstance. However, I don't think the act of sneaking in to a concert put on by one of the highest grossing tours in history is by definition a sin.
And I swear upon my dead childhood dog's grave that I am Deadhead through and through.
And I have never snuck into a show (only got to see 2 before Jerry died).
Music SHOULD be free. And we should all be making it for each other.
That's bullshit. They stormed the fence and started destroying it. And the band has a right to charge, and they had very reasonable prices. Google the letter the band put out at the St. Louis shows after this happened. It was bullshit how so many hangers on took advantage of hippie love just to ruin it like that. There's no way you can justify it.
It was the weekend of the 4th of July. I avoided it. Something told me Deer Creek with the way the idiots had been glomming on and showing up in droves without tix? No thanks. I warned a friend not to go. Saw him in St. Louis and he hugged me and thanked me for the warning and asked how I knew. I didn't, just guessed.
thats right ya little weirdo let it all out,,tell us about the man at the park who touched you!...your a head case,,hang yourself,,internet tough guys ,,its getting old,,plus your original comment was so retarded you removed it...fuck me ,,,no fuck you!piece of shit !
I gate crashed but never when it put people at risk, we just hopped the fence at Alpine valley one time. I paid my first 2 nights so it seemed fair (at the time). Gate crashing is never cool nevertheless.
Sad example of a group of people ruining things for many more. I'm pretty sure none of those kids climbing the fence even knew a quarter of the music of the Grateful Dead and were just crashing in to "party". Made the real fans of the music and band look bad to the rest of the world. Question to those who crashed the gates..."Do you still like the Grateful Dead? Did you ever in the first place? Sad...really sad.
No it is not! That's bullshit. There were a lot of idiots who thought it was cool to show up without tickets and try to sell or score drugs, but they weren't dead fans or heads. They were maggots.
Deer Creek used to be cool, and now.....well be careful if you are planning on attending Phish in a few months, I haven't been there in 5 years, I think there is a reason why acts like this don't go there much anymore.
How do you remember it/? Were you there without a ticket? Shame on anyone who showed up without a ticket, mucking things up for legitimate fans and ticket holders. I can't believe you'd even admit it.
Yes, i can believe, because the dead had for years begged people without tickets to stay the fuck home. But apparently you lacked the respect to heed the band's wishes that you keep your mangy ass out of the scene without a very affordable ticket. (I mean it's not like they were gauging people) As far as I'm concerned, you had no business being there if you were outside in the lot without a ticket. They should have only let ticket holders into the lot.
@TheRealtMG get over it the dead is gone. who gives a shit what you think about what people were doing there without tickets those of us who lived in the area had every right to be there. because all you dead head ass holes would come stink up the fuckin town. get over it bro. JERRYS gone buddy......
@nicsmi78 I thought that the local Noblesville folks were very gracious and welcoming everytime I saw the Dead there. Those gate crashers were bad family and bad temporary neighbors. I'd like to thank the people of Noblesville for being as nice as they were to myself and my friends. Sorry for the people who couldn't just pass through without making a fucking statement and being pigs. I'll bet Phish fans are the fucking pits aren't they?
late in the first set. the guy who threw the bottle at the lady cop...what a fuckhead..was pretty much right beside me...my buddies got maced...i finished my beer...the guy at the gate says..."go on in....i caught the end of the last song of the first set...and enjoyed the second set....
see everyone on cinco de mayo in chicago "09"
LOVE,
p.s. i shouldve posted theses comments from last to first huh?
....lady cop maces girl because girl expresses anger twards lady cops actions... people in the crowd booing/screaming....people counting "1...2!!!" and nothing...an altercation between law and heads ensues....they count again "1...2!!!" the ones doing so..taunting law enforcement....and so on....then "1.....2....."and someone yells "three!!!" and like the running of the bulls off they went...mowing down eachother and barrelling up the side of the hill....
You had no legitimate business being out in the lot without a ticket. Didn't you ever hear the P.A. before shows telling people "If you don't have a ticket, stay home" ?? Or did you have so little respect for the dead that you just did whatever the fuck you wanted. Well, fuck you for mucking it up for people with tickets who were there for the music and not the stupid "scene, maaan."
this from my point of few...im standing at the red tape...everyone's been sayin'"hey, rush the gate at 7:30" well,i go piss and come back....im getting anybodys full beer cause they cant bring it in...and swillin' k...so this girls dog hops the red tape to go make friends with this lady cops k9...the lady cop maces the dog..girl hops the tape to get her dog...
Wish I had had a cell phone cam that day. Beautiful day, ruined.

What a way for Jerry to end his career at Deer Creek. Stupid assholes had to ruin it.
bartsimpsonforprez 1 year ago
it's easy to say 15 years later that all the 'gatecrashers' were a bunch of idiots. not that it was right, there were many, many elements that lead to the storming of the pavilion I was a 'gatecrasher', not proud by any means, but when there's a mob of several thousand people coming your way, and tear gas going off...only 1 thing left 2 do, run up the damn hill! end of the day, in my eyes the police presence and their shitty attitude towards Heads set it all off!

wasn't the Phish shows right before the Dead, I remember alot of poeple with Phish shirts on bragging they crashed the gate.

@philtay That is a correct assumption. I like some of their songs, but I despise the comparison to the Dead and how overrated phish is.

@philtay I worked concert security for Phish. Nothing about the concert experience the same. NONE OF IT. The crowds were rude and dirty and violent, leaving acres of garbage in their wake. Fights breaking out all over the place. dead heads, at least the old school, had more respect than that.

Yeah - posers like you really contributed so much to the scene. I was in that chaos, ran up the hill to the fence then turned right back around, I knew better then to take that step but people don't realize that the cops were INSANE at that show, there was nowhere to go except up. they were throwing tear gas into groups with women and children, they were beating the shit out of kidz after being brought down by attack dogs . this thing blew up out of a handful of drunk fucks, arrogant blood thirsty cops and a whole lot of good people caught in the middle.
glasstribe 2 years ago
Ok- you are a LIAR. Cops did not beat women and children you disgusting moron. They reacted to what you simpletons were doing.

TheRealtMG 2 years ago
How do you explain the lack of following of other bands that played in the same circles as the dead (new riders, etc). Try thinking a little bit. It won't hurt I promise.
Alfrunk 2 years ago
There is no way to know that for sure, but environment is important. I doubt rap would have been popular in the 30's. That has no reflection on peoples' talent.
Alfrunk 2 years ago
Regardless, the drugs in the scene helped nurture the community in it's infancy, it brought together people that normally would not interact with each other on such a level. The music was the staying power which grew into the beauty that was the Grateful Dead.......
TheBurgonian330 2 years ago
.......I would kill to have been able to see the dead with Jerry, but have been to hundreds of shows in "the scene" (or at least whats left of it) and there's always a special vibe in the air when any member of the dead takes stage, or any dead song is covered. Regardless of the acid tests, the dead did not play psychedelia exclusively......

A sad day indeed.
livebandstouring 2 years ago
But the dead has reasonable prices, and you could order directly to avoid TicketBastard. And Jerry died later that Summer, so they didn't go anywhere after St. Louis and Chicago.
TheRealtMG 2 years ago
douglas that's bullshit. High ticket prices is not an excuse to crash gates. Do you steal from Walmart when they have high prices? Listen to the Keller Williams song "Gate Crashers Suck".
You might learn something.
livebandstouring 2 years ago
They should have played at the racetrack in Indianapolis where you could fit 100,000 fans and charge an affordable price for the ticket. $50 to $60 per show was outrageous. The cops in the height of the Clinton Police State were more than willing to turn the situation into a riot control atmosphere against their nemesis, the Hippies.
It's funny how nobody brings up the gate crash at Shoreline in August 1991 when they played a first set Dark Star. I guess those broke fans weren't Family.
douglasfir77 2 years ago
It wasn't $50 or 60 per show! It was half that. And if idiots without tickets had stayed away, it would have been find.
TheRealtMG 2 years ago
