  • So true....Billy's piano work really shines thru on this track. He added a dimension to the music that was undeniably Skynyrd.....Just beautiful.....

  • Beautiful, beautiful version. the piano is exquisite.

  • Thanks, Billy. Thanks, Ronnie.

  • Its happy hour in the islands! Well its 3 in the afternoon, but nevertheless. Cant think of a better way to start it off. Incredible version. Thank you for posting

  • I'm in agreement this is the best version.

  • I LOVE SKYNYRD! This version made me cry the first time I heard it. \m/

  • I own this album and I am 19 years old. Skynyrd is one of my all time favorites ever!!

  • @roberto12ing I'm a fetus and I own this album. That's how young I am and I love this album.

  • Awesome version on par perhaps better than the actual released one. hard to believe but its even more soulful. i really dig the more prominent piano.

    ty for sharing!

  • 0 dislikes? thats what im talkin about

  • @liameppes i'm gonna ruin it.... just kidding i would never

  • @Chargersman77 looks like nobody would

  • Where'd you find this version?

  • Gimmie some honky tonk piano any day of the week and some Del Wood to boot!

  • All I can say is WOW!!

  • The demo sounds better then later versions. I got nothing against the other versions

  • MUITO LINDA ESSSA MUSICA PERFEITA

  • By the way, Leonard Skinner has just passed away. Hit the Jacksonville (Fla.) newspaper website. We've all heard the band's version of the name, but the paper has the family's version, and it's good.

  • The piano arrangement was already excellent by this time and no wonder it carried over, pretty much intact.

  • @NTSC1080 Ony the solo was carried over. All of that piano stuff during the verses was cut out.

  • happy gilmore anyone?

  • @Jash71234 yes thats what came to mind when i heard this song

  • life.... it was so mutch easyer back then.....some how i got cary on...train roll on....

  • life.... it was so mutch easyer back then.....some how i got cary on...train roll on...

  • My posts must have got the boot, but anyway I am good friends with Bob Burns and I ask him why Robert Nix played drums on the final studio version of this song and Bob said he never was told a reason by Ronnie,Just "Hey Robert Nix is gonna play on this". I told Bob after playing this song with him several times He played it just fine to me!BTW if you go to "Medley Part2" I have on my page you can see Bob Burns himself playing on this song.Tell me if you think he has any problem?

  • everyone of you feel like I do....bury my ashes round my Daddy's tomb, and spread the rest in the sea...with this song in the background! I'll purposely die on a Tuesday to bring it full circle! Thanks everyone for sharing all the same feelings in my gut & heart for these guys! 15 and forever! <3 :(...

  • I was lucky enough to listen to band play a set in a bar in jax beach. it was a monday night, they played free bird without any one singing... later i ask who they were ... they were the rossington collins band(LynyrdSkynyrd) this was about the spring of1981... it was inspiring

  • This IS a better version of the song... If notice in the second chorus Ronnie changes his melody up a bit.... Just subtle things in this version feels better and more real than the released version. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. My dad is goin to have me play this during his funeral and I'll be honored and Im sure Ronnie, Gary, and Billy will be as well.

  • This version stands on its own no doubt. Beautiful, melancholy and uplifting all together. I too would be proud to have this played as they scatter my ashes outside of Fall Creek Falls, Tennessee.

  • thanks for posting this demo

  • one of the best guitar solos EVER.

  • I listen to this and could honestly cry.. i wish i couldve met all these guys and just let em know how important they were are and always will be.. RIP guys, gone but never forgotten they will forever live through their music and in the hearts of every fan

  • when I get to heaven I want to do many things one of them is find ronnie and the rest of the crew and thank them for leaving such soul touching music to listen to during our journy through life

  • How can ya top that performance? Truly beautiful.

  • Yet another instance where the demo is better than the final cut.

  • you feel the passion in ronnies voice and billy powells influence kept that alive for many years,,,

  • the greatest musicians were born soon after WW2 from where I seen the world...for some reason....

  • thanks for the post and preparing the vid !!!

    appreciated !

  • I swear to god if i see a hip hop cover of this song... I will cry then repeatedly stab the person who did it.

  • You and me both.

  • @TheSnipersAim It will destroy the meaning and simplicity of this song, and many other great classic rock songs

  • This is perfect......

Raw as was b4 the managers got to them. And highlights Billy who came back to what he luved until the day he passed - w/out his skill their music would not have been complete....it's core to the blues component of their music although they probably didn't realize it at the time...

or the impact they and the other FL bands would have on the world :D

  • saw the original band in 1974 in Bangor Maine - AWESOME

  • RIP, Billy... Peter Keys, if you should happen to read this, you've got some pretty big shoes to fill... You'd better do the best you can to do Billy's legacy justice!

  • the pioneers of southern rock music after 40 years they still got it. They didn't quit even after the tragic plane crash that took Ronnie and Steves life, and almost killed others Lynyrd Skynyrd was still alive

  • i love this song

  • Noone will ever ever touch them they were, and Are the ultimate southern rock band. Everyone else is a great tribute. When you think of th songs, and how Ronnie presented them. brings a tear to the eyes... God Bless all those who have died... and those who carry the flame.noone could do it better than his own brother. I know one happy ass Gym Teacher!

  • Great job!!!

  • Rest in Peace, Billy, my brutha! You were one of the best rock keyboard players who ever lived, and Skynyrd's greatest musician, in my opinion. You will be missed. Say hi to Ronnie.

  • Now i can hear him. Billy Powell, Thank you for your Keyboard playing and imaginative music. January 29th, 2009 day of death. Billy Powell (Keyboard).

  • rip billy

  • yeah well i think its done now that billy powell is gone...aint the same without him. especially in this recording

  • ...as if they havent already proved it?

LynyrdSkynyrd will NEVER be done, gone or forgotten.

    In Any Way

    Peace4Real

  • rip billy boy

  • great song

  • nice

  • I gotta agree. There are some singers who really put part of themselves into a song, and Ronnie VanZandt was one of those artists. He sounds great in this demo despite the lack of effects on his voice. No disrespect to the band, but I just can't listen to any later Skynyrd recordings after the accident. It's just not the same band.

  • Thanks for posting this.....

  • Awesome song...

  • I saw them in Manchester UK 75 i think and to me they are the greatest rock band ever ( ah Zep) but I weep when i hear them play, i'm 54 now god rest you boys. I think i will have this at my funeral too......

  • I agree. I am 100% sure that i am going to have this or Simple Man, or both. R.I.P

    -Ronnie Van Zant

    -Allen Collins

    -Leon Wilkeson

    -Steve Gaines

    -Cassie Gaines

    We miss You all!

  • -Billy Powell

  • I want this and THIS VERSION played at my funeral.

  • I think I like this better than the original. I am honored that you would play this at your funeral so would Skynyrd. RIP Ronnie

  • this is the original they are both awesome

  • @SoloJarred Remember this is the original. The other version came about after the studio and the band made changes and edits.

  • @Azznbad guess it depends on the way you look at it. this version wasn't produced with intent to release

  • I like this version just as much as the famous one. Both masterpieces. RIP Ronnie, you were a great man.

  • I always thought there was a waltz lurking in there somewhere. This confirms it. Great stuff.

  • Thanks for posting this man it means alot!

  • Thanks for posting that ... a cool look into the beginnings of one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • I also Have freebird that I may upload later.
