  • you don't go up with the ribbons in ballet.........hahaha :)

  • dont tie your pumps like that..if you take the time to read some websites, like the Antonio Pacelli one, they normally give advise to new dancers..such as you can but you shouldn't tie your pumps like that because it can cause foot problems

  • Christ, if the lot of them just squeezed and turned out their feet...

  • never, ever teach a treble/ rally by swinging the foot that way - the best way to do it is keep the right foot in front while you brush out and back, it prevents wide, uncrossed trebles when the kids get better at them. Also, its a shame when she was dancing at the end that she didnt do it to the music, not sure if it was just the dubbing, but needs fixing!!!!!

  • I'm just starting hardshoe! can't wait to be able ta do advanced trebles

  • wow...that step at the end when she demonstrated the ''full'' step, many beginners use that step...i used it when i started in 1999

  • Dont rap the lace round your feet it may help your arches but it makes your foot in that shape so... Yeah if you want dodge feet go ahead. But i would strongly recommend against it :L

  • When you're doing jumps behind, you must strike both of legs together and then make 2,3!!

  • I thought this was very informative and easy to start out with. Of course, I would have to take a professional class to make sure I was doing things right, but the fact that there was a Kevin there who seemed older, I think it is possible to learn when you're older. It may be harder, but possible.

    Erin

  • @erienspice I'm 23 now (male) and started with the basics (ofcourse) 3 months ago. If you're not such a sporty type, you will have to stretch a lot to perform certain movements (or at least I have to)

After a while another beginner joined us, which was ten years older than me: it will probably get harder as you get older, but no impossible.

Probably the best advice: train your feet: almost every step/dance is done on your toes, which puts on a huge strain on the muscles around them.

  • @weeardguy Thank you for responding to this. knowing that it is possible to learn at an older age (though difficult) is promising to me. i need to find a class that does adult beginning, but I am still willing to work at it! Thanks again, and good luck!

  • @erienspice You're welcome ;) I wouldn't call learning Irish dance itself difficult: the only difference is that it incorporates the use of a lot of muscles you normally never or hardly use at all. Besides that, I'm quite a bad example: I 'suffer' from very short muscles in my whole body, so I just have to stretch a lot.

  • I don't like how she does trebles. I call them Rallys. But I don't like how she does them, I've been taught that (if on my right foot) I have to to the shuffle but on the left side of my left foot, crossing my feet, toes out and hitting my bum. Or is my dance teacher and the rest of my association doing it differently to the world?

  • how long does it take to learn to stand up on your toes?

  • @Ecstasysclub If you have big feet and buy the Super flexie black sole rutherfords, no time at all. lol Now learning to stay balanced that way takes work haha

  • @shellyhathaway not really XD LOL I dont have big feet I'm just an average size XD buy it looks awesome!

  • Hi (:

A very good video! I have begun with irish dance on Friday. (: And it helps wehen I train.

I'm from germany and that's why I don't understand what kind of shoes this in the first minute from the video are. (sorry)

Can you tell it me please?

    Greetings Laura (:

P.S.: Sorry for my english. I'm not so good.

  • @Lauraakasmile The first pair of shoes are called Soft Shoes. For beginners when practising, a pair of ballet pumps are allowed. The second pair are Hard Shoes. Sand shoes are ok for practising, but you don't get the right kind of noise out of them. :) Did I help?

  • @Emikero

Yes, Thank you for help (:

  • These types of videos are very helpful to those of us that can not get into classes at the moment. thank you for taking the time to produce these videos.

  • @sassylassy01 just keep in mind she does like 2 years worth of training in only the first 2 minutes LOL

  • she's out of time at the end... just sayin

  • I like this video help me to learn this dance, and I laughed when she say "and this is Kevin" xD

  • she taught her bf to do the reel side step... romantic...

  • horrible turn out.

  • So much for soft shoe dances being SOFT shoe. XD

  • "These are toe walks. These are more advanced toe walks. This is Kevin!" :D

  • @reelburke I was just about to comment the same thing!

  • @reelburke LOL

  • Comment removed

  • so i just noticed that at the begining, she doesnt keep her back foot out. and thats super important.

  • hahah these r toe walks, these r more advanced toe walks, and this is kevin

  • hahahahahahahahaha I loved that too XD

  • i have a question!i love irish jigs but, is this the only way to dance them? i mean, the traditional irish dance is this? :s

  • @aggeliki1202 there's loads more movements that are completely interchangeable in each dance (although some movements are specific to certain dances). a jig is a dance but is also the type of song it's danced to. this video showed the basics of the basics of irish dancing. in a workshop you'd learn them in the first 10 minutes.

  • Yes, this is traditional irish dance, well, irish dance have a lot of steps, You have to know basic steps to dance jigs...

  • i was thinking that

  • The best advice on Irish dancing that I have yet found on youtube.

  • I have been trying to do the lift and keep failing. the timing of the leg lift is what is confusing me. I lift up my right leg and have no idea how to move my left leg or when to move it. Maybe if it was in slow motion I could better understand, lol. Oh well :)

  • @KaterTater23 think of it as a leap instead of a lift. standing with both feet on the ground leap forward (you can stay in place and even move backwards eventually) with your right foot. ideally you'd hit your bum with your left foot, but that can come later. once you land, step forward with your left and immediately bring your right foot right behind your left. then leap with your left foot from that position and so and so forth. say "leap, step, behind" in your head. hope that helped.

  • @KaterTater23 one more thing i noticed... she does a weird skip thing after she leaps in this video. that's probably what makes it confusing. personally, i've never seen anyone do it like that.

  • Ahhh, of course. You're performing a service to humanity. Thank goodness! Unfortunately for you [and perhaps for them], Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera are already gone. But you have succeeded in making a perfectly innocent thread -- where young people do post -- a bit creepy. Bully for you!

Oy vey, I'm done with this. Go pester someone else.

  • I'm a WOMAN checking out information on Irish dancing for my daughters who are...[wait for it]... Irish dancers, you dork.

Speaking of, what's your excuse for being here? Wait, let guess: stumbled on during a binge?

  • Congratulations, you got me; I actually fell for it! I was all riled up by your comment and posted this heartfelt retort [which I have since removed] and THEN I had the sense to check you out.

So very sad that your life is so limited that this is actually a hobby for you [besides "Gas", of course]. Leeds University [if you actually went there] must be so proud of its distingushed alumni. BTW, it's spelled "German".

  • hi im one of the top irish dancers in michigan but ummm im just trying to help u with ur terms, the so called lift is called just a jump, the so called skip is not that its called threes

  • threes are also called lifts.. it just depends who your teacher is.. also jumps are also called glides or lifts.

  • I luvvvvvvvvvvvv the teacher!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!

  • The click made me giggle since it was in slow-mo :)

  • best jerks eva!!!! GGPR statuss!!!

  • she makes the skip look really hard in her slow demo. its not hard at all, and there is a much easier way to show someone!

  • Important question for those in the know. Not only does my daughters' teacher [yes, she is qualified & she even competes] have them run their laces under their arches, she has them replace their string laces with elastic for quick changes between shoes. Is this really, really bad.

BTW, I don't think this video is from the US, I think it is from Canada, unless it's from the waaayyy north mid-west [huh?]; the girl says "a-boout" and "ooout" in the wardrobe video.

  • Its fine (my dd uses elastics in the shoes she does shows in)-just make sure they are not tied super tight

  • It's not good to replace your laces with elastics, but how bad it is depends on how tightly or loosely they are tied. The teacher is probably jut looking at the practical side of things.

Personally, I would question this as the time difference between slipping on/off the elastics vs laces is hardly worth the trouble and potential danger of elastics. Surely the teacher can wait an extra minute?? Most other teachers seem to manage....

  • we replace our with elastics, but mostly for St. Patrick's day because we're changing our shoes so much...

  • Running the laces under the arch is very standard practice, although some ghillies don't need to do that because they are made to contour the arch (like mine, A. Pacelli Elites).

  • Thank you both for the info!!! :-) My older daughter is starting her 4th year and my younger is starting her 2nd, but I can't help them with it because I always took ballet.

  • four words: turn. out. your. feet. and at the end you should probably stay on time with the music. thats what its for. good luck though!

  • I'm facinated by the similarities between HD and ID. Also I'm fascinated by the incredible change that has happened in ID in the last 25 yrs or so. The ID and costume of today is sooooo different. Are there any older dancers out there who can comment on thee changes?

  • So the Irish dancers have finally started using Scottish Highland Ghillies! These used to be the exclusive of Highland Dancing and make precise foot and toe movement possible.

  • The Irish dancers have always used the same shoes, I think.

  • she sucks, she had some basics that needed brushing up on, but she wasn't so good

  • UMMMMMMM Hi retired open world qualifier championship dancer and ummmm she SUKS

  • i have heard that putting the laces under arches can be bad for your feet

  • it's a requirement- in Irish dancing

  • oh ok

    thanks

im a beginner and wasnt sure

  • so am I but I'm grasping it quick enough. But it definately does matter which shoe you put on the foot- this woman doesn't know anything except some basics, but her form on the basics was horrific.

  • luckily i havent been taking her advise haha

  • roxana; And in Highland dance, - never.

  • I'm a prelim dancer and the other dancers her are mostly right. she was saying to hid your back leg, and yes, you shouldn't see your back knee but you should see your back feet, or at least the heels. and she was off time, i don't want to offend anyone, but if you are planning on learning to dance, please PLEASE! get a teacher who has their teaching license. really.

  • okay this isnt right u should know how to irish dance before u try teach it!!!

  • She does not know what the heck she's doing!!!!!!!! Did you see her placement?!?!?! It was horrible. After watching this, I'm embarresed to say I Irish dance. She was pitiful. NOBODY watch this to learn how to irish dance!!!!!!!

  • She has NO CLUE wat she is talking about!!!! She cant even dance on time to the music!!! & just cuz u walk foward on the toe walks doesnt make them more advanced. kevin was betta than her!!

  • Ok she is really wrong. I am a championship irish dancer and honestly she shouldnt be teaching anyone how to do anything. First of all turn out! cross more! and irish dance shoes are tied in multiple ways there isnt a specific way to tie them. and for your toe work your advanced toe work looks aweful. sorry to be mean but if people are using this to learn irish dance then they should atleast get there facts straight.

  • Comment removed

  • Thats really not nice. Everyone knows that she is doin it wrong but u shouldnt post stuff that dont belong

  • Comment removed

  • please take my advice and NEVER cross your shoe laces under your arches!! it can cause serious damage!! this lady is wrong.

  • YES!!! Everyone says it's not true but it is!!! My physiotherapist said so!!!

  • would help if she was in time to the music

  • i never thought id see another person besides an irish teaching moves on irish dancing!

  • um, michael flatley isn't even irish, he is from chicago. there are tons of irish dancing teachers from all around the world- including ones born in america. there are more irish dancers in the us than there are in ireland. and, to everyone else, she really isn't that bad, she is just teaching basic stuff.

  • Um, she was saying that you don't cross the ribbons above your shoe like you do on pointe shoes. She was saying that you go -under- the shoe as well as around. You need to grow up and pay more attention, she wasn't saying that in ballet you cross your ribbons all the way up like that (improperly) she was just demonstrating. Stop reading so much into it.

  • And an Irish dancer would be the LAST person to say that ballet isn't hard work- trust me, as a dancer myself, we understand how any type of dance is EXTREMELY physical.

  • She didn't imply that ballet dancers are prissy or weak in any way. She was just exaggerating the way ballet shoes are tied (because they do go up the leg a bit) to contrast it with the way most people tie irish dance ghillies.

    Take a deep breath.

  • actually they should never go over the achilis heal so they dont at all go up the leg.

  • lol talk about bees in your bonnet!!!! where exactly did she say ballet is not hard work? ummmmm NO WHERE!

  • I agree with pheona1000. These videos are introductions to the basics- there's no need for perfection as far as I'm concerned. I've never danced before and they're piquing my interest to start (and I think that's the point). Maybe you 'pros' should stick to watching videos that are geared for your level of expertise.

    Thanks WatchMojo.

  • Sorry, i meant to click thumbs up!

    x

  • Perhaps a little more etiquette is called for when commenting on U-Tube demonstrators and on other peoples posts.

In my experience, even amongst fully qualified Irish dance teachers (even those who originate from Ireland) and who chose to concentrate on teaching advanced students, there will always be differences in technique and terminology.

Surely it is irrelevant whether or not the demonstrator is Irish or American as good technique is the same in any land?

    Pheòna Miller

  • wow turn out your feet. thats like my pet peve.

  • there not hop skips they are hop 1,2,3s

    u dance 2 the music hop1,2,3 hop 2,2,3 hop3,2,3 hop 4,2,3 hop 5,2,3 all the way up 2 8.2.3

  • TURN OUT! if your going to show a video and tell people to turn out, it would be helpful if you turn out yourself.

  • also, very sloppy and her demonstration of a rally is terrible...it's not a shuffle...it's a controlled movement.

  • wrapping the string around the arch weakens the arch & can damage the foot. needs to turn out more.

  • Sloppy shoe!!! honestly this movie does not appeal to me at all. My teacher usually call them rallies or trebles-as long as no one uses any terms from other dance forms... hey i think we use that music sometimes!!! we need some BFOC kids doing videos (:

  • Her turnout is not so amazing...

  • dagirl321,

we call "cuts" where you jump, bend your legs up to your knee, then bring it back down.

sorry that is a really bad description lol x

  • wow... at my school we call trebles rallys, and they do in comerford too...

  • I thoughtt thee most basic sortaa moves were jump 23's, cuts and hops,, and i agree withh

Tiponigirl, toe walks are quite advanced for begginers.

  • what are cuts?

  • Its alright but even for beginners they shouldn't be shown toe walks because it will make them think that its ok to do that. without proper training you could really hurt yourself!

  • exactly you certainly need to learn how to spread your weight properly over your feet before even considering toe walks. otherwise a broken ankle is on the cards! I can't believe she showed them as 'beginner' to be honest!

  • Tying your shoe underneath your arches can really aggravate them, especially if you have plantar fascitis! Many people tie them round their ankle, low down to be on the safe side : )

Also be careful to turn out with the whole leg not just from the foot, forcing the knee. The video does demonstrate correct turn out but it does say turn your foot out.

Neverthless an informative video, nice one. Breaks the steps down well.

  • i wanna learn how to irish dance :(

  • She's off time when she does her 7's at the end

  • yeah she is miles out!

  • i new all that stuff any way it is realii good for people who have just started

  • I don't actually believe in tying the lace under the arch. It's not great if you are looking to keep your feet healthy in the long run.

  • I just wanted to add that she isn't a bad dancer at all, I just don't care for how she teaches trebles. When she dances, she doesn't swing from the knee, she only teaches it that way. I didn't mean to sound like I thought the woman instructing was not an accomplished dancer.

  • Gahhhh what is that tap dancing she is doing! Never ever bend at the knee for a treble. You should never use that as an example for a beginner. I have seen so many tap dancers have to overcome bending the knee back and keeping the ankle and foot straight forward when they begin Irish dance. It's tough to learn to only use your ankle for trebles. (And her foot is flat coming up for the click... yikes!) If you practice your dancing wrong, you dance it wrong in class and at competition.

  • actually it's not called tap dancing- that's ballet speak.

  • Exactly. That is why I said "tap dancing." She is swinging from her knee (performing a 'shuffle' not a 'treble' or 'rally'), not using her ankles like one should in irish dance. I have been an irish dancer for ten years. I have also done years of tap, ballet, and jazz. I was pointing out the difference.

  • oh... i din't realise!!!

  • well that is OK for beginners... and I do balet and unless working with point shoes or requested by teacher laces are tucked in.

    No duh :P

  • i do irish dancing and you don't have to tuck in the laces unless you are competing so it looks better. (I don't tuck in the laces, if they come untied, then I just retie them)

  • I said ballet...

  • um are u even an irish dancer?

  • Some example she is.

  • OMG! What a terrible way to show ppl dance moves! 3 GLARING mistakes - 1. Never, never teach a treble swingin the foot like that, keep it in front! 2. Toes DOWN on click (see her left foot as it goes up??) 3. Dance to the music - jesus - the ending is soooo awful! How can ppl watch this rubbish!

  • I agree, not a good video at all, she didn't even cover all the basics of turning out and what not.

  • get urr arms in lady. o well good for beginners.

PRO SOFT SHOES ARE THE BEST!!!! APLIT SOLES! NOT FULL SOLE!

full sole isnt as good for pointing,

  • why don't they just call it tap dancing ;/

  • coz its completeley different..otherwise they would of called it tap dancing..

  • Give or take a couple of moves...

  • give or take approximately 100 moves. also the style is SOOOO different

  • They're almost identical.

  • I've done both and I've been doing irish my whole life. Irish has definite similarities, but they aren't the same or identical. Tap is an evolution of Irish and many other more traditional styles, irish is just irish. Asside from some of the basics there is nothing the same

  • also, irish is more than just hardshoe, there is the softshoe portion as well, irish has more than one section, tap just has one

  • ...I kind of want to slap you right now.

  • I've done both Irish and Ballet (on pointe) and Irish dancing is much more "taxing" than ballet. This isn't just my opinion either, friends and other people I know that have done both types of dancing find irish much harder and more taxing than ballet!!

  • Get YOUR facts straight.

She didn't say tie the ribbons up your leg, she was merely pointing out that you bring the strings around your FOOT not your ANKLE.

And it's not called "Irish Skipping", so I suggest you get YOUR facts straight before you start accusing us of not knowing anything.

  • irish skipping..ha! whose that loser?!

  • now heyyy!!! people are just havin a casual chat bout irish dancing..wether ppl tie their laces around their ankle or foot..no one mentioned ballet, and here u come along goin crazy at people..tellin them about ballet..wen in reality no one cares bwt how people tie their laces in ballet coz most of these people do IRISH DANCING ... not BALLET.. soooo i suggest u shuuuuuuuuuut up coz honestly no one cares bwt ur laces nd where u tie them..ha, and btw..why u watchin an irish dancing video?!

  • she wasn't on about it being anything like ballet, she was pointing out the anatomy of bone and tendon safety.

  • i neva sed sh was comparn th2 altho@th end sh dus by claimin ballet is more "taxing".i sed sh was goin on bwt ballet ppls laces bt this is an irish dancin video so y wud ppl care bwt ballt ppls laces?!&i duno where tht2nd commnt came frm..clearly th girls b4her r tlkn bwt tyin ther irish dancn laces tite round ther foot/ankle& she goes off on1bwt ballet agen?!calln them morons!bottm line is th woman in th video made a few mistaks bwt irish dancin..no need2go crazy cz sh got1thng rong bwt ballet!

  • I'm not even going to attempt to read that until it's spelled right.

  • lazzzzzzzy

  • No just educated in English, not moron language

  • jesus turn out !

  • your not supposed to tie your laces under your arch. if you do, your can mess up your foot pretty bad.

  • You can actually can damage your feet by tying them around you ankle as well. So any way you tie them, you could get injured.

Its all about not tying them too tight

  • No, if you tie it up your ankle, you're going to rip your achilles' tenon in half. Everyone at every feis I've ever been to ties it under their foot, as do I, as does my teacher. The Irish dance laces are too hard/sharp to tie it up your ankle.

  • stupid shite

  • Wow! That brings me back, what 7 years? My first class, I got all upset b/c I couldn't do 1-2-3's! I'm wayy past that now, haha. Everynow and then I teach a beginner class!

(what's with the timing of her last step??)

  • haha the 7's? ya they are timed wierd I guess she thought no Id exoerts would watch it so it was alright for bad timing?

  • I noticed the timing in the 7s too. My guess is she did them without music and the editor put music in later and didn't know about timing.

  • your back foot is supposed to be turned out when pointing..

  • Your back foots supposed to be turned out wen it hsowed u the points bit..:D

  • oh, and i remember summink like brush hop down 1-2-3-4

    something liek dat... :S

  • i remember when i was 4-7 i did irish dancing and i remember my teach saying

    hop 1-2-3-4-5-6 and a 1-2-3 and a 1-2-3 hop...etc... MEMORIES. LOL

  • dude what the hell is wrong ith you people?! i have three teachers and each of them refers to steps in different ways! one says 1,2,3 one says change,2,3 one says over,2,3... so back off she probably had a different teacher then you!

  • Mate Its Jump-Two-Three Not A Skip

  • yuuh could do skip 2-3 aswell... :)

  • There are bunches of names for irish dance movements. its just whatever you prefer

  • no ID movements have standard names (i.e Butterflies may be called entrechats or doubles)

  • its called changing it is like this change 2 3

change 2 3 point hop back

  • you shouldnt say your hands should be plays directly by your sid becoz yu shouldnt be able to c yhur hands!!!!!!!!!

  • i'm starting irish dance tonight!

It'll be loads of fun i think.

    I'm 15 but idc.

    better late than never. =]

  • Umm, u said that the back foot has to be hidden, but actually it has to be crossed over and turned out. so when its like that its not going to be hidden. you dont just keep your back foot straight and behind! U didn't even mention how important turn out is! turn out!
