About his obsession with Christine; he pretty much says it all in the song 'No one would listen' - when Gerard Butler sings it. A song first ment to be in the movie but later were removed. Hope I could help you with your despair! :)

@notredameswarrior1 Yes though in the orginal text (book) it is said that it was not his birth name is he ever even and was picked up/ given to him randomly in his life.

In Susan Kay's Phantom (a much loved 'companion' book) the Phantom is named Erik by the town priest at his birth/baptism (they were catholic and thought he was gonna die) when his horrified mother refused to name him.

Compared to the original singers, (which are great as well) I feel that Gerard's style is much more appropriate to the style of music in this film. I was really shocked that he preformed a part like this, so i give him props and congrats on a very well done job. I'm really not a Gerard fan in any of his other movies but my girlfriend absolutely loves him and I really enjoyed his work in this movie.

Unfortunately people decided that opening night called for their best pair of jeans and flannel shirt! I long for the days when people dressed for special events, even airplane rides. I don't know why fans of the original musical said this version of the song ruined the story due to it's HUGE sets during the number. But I say that the simple sets in the original musical sucked! The stage in 'Don Juan' in the musical is also more closed and intimate, which works for PONR; no background dancers interrupting the moment.

The Phantom is someone who wants to be remembered for his talent and not his ugliness, so Don Juan in the film feels more like HIS work due to that expectation of wowing the audience with his modern score and direction.
