  • This video is amazing. Did you play with eddie daniels later then?

  • The musical "communication" between both guys is awesome - definitely a classic recording.....

  • Geweldig!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!! Nederland heeft haar eigen "Eddie Daniels"!!!!

  • jjejejeejeeeeee:))

  • I...can only dream to play like this

  • is amazing... eddie you are the best...greetings from romania...

  • wow. i used to think no one can compare to eddie daniels. now that i see this video where bernard is just amazing!! better than daniels actually. it makes me wonder how many clarinet players out their probaly are better than eddie daniels that just are not as well known for whatever reason.

  • @Tarcila62078

You would have been at the Nalen jazz club in Sweden in 2001 when Eddie duel with the Swedish clarinet legend and Europe's greatest jazz clarinet player ever, Putte Wickman. Putte Wickman took out Eddie Daniels total that night, and I was not the least bit surprised. Have you never heard of Putte Wickman before so I really think that you should do it! He was much better on the clarinet than Eddie Daniels in every way. It is a shame that hardly anyone in the US don't know him.

  • wow! Bernard----why have I not heard of you till now? Great sound, phrasing, SWINGING, ideas, chops, etc. What band was backing you?

  • Bernard, thanks for uploading this. Such a satisfying contrast of playing styles between you and Eddy!

    Love it!

  • Bernard you are awesome..i haven't herad of you till know..you are just amazing!!!!1

  • All time high! Think I've seen it 100 times and this is really THE jazz-clarinet-duel of all times!!

  • muy bueno el video

  • Please know that Bernard is very good here but Eddie is the man! No one can touch him.

  • 1+1= infinity

  • both are good only diference if you notice is that one plays more jazz...and bernard is more of a dixie guy ..two different aproaches both sound great..but in my personal taste bernard is on my side

  • et pour les retrouver avec le 10xieland

faire trois w (point)10xieland(point)new(point)fr à bientôt sur la toile et peut être avec eux

  • EXTRA la prochaine fois , on les verra peut être avec le 10xieland combo jazz de roger

  • Fabuleux!!!

  • eddie laying down that pipe

  • I have beenplaying clarinet for 9 years, and am a decent musician, this video almost made me cry. I love the style of music, and the musicianship is amazing. I love the crystal mouthpiece too, I play on one too.

  • but...Bernard is real close to Eddie.....very fat and big, dark tone.... 10 stars.......

  • EDDIE IS THE BEST CLARINET PLAYER

  • Los dos son excelentes clarinetistas. Mis felicitaciones

  • It puzzles me why you don't give information on the orchestra and the date.

  • You are right usefulmusic! This video is from a telvisionshow that was recorded for Dutch television in the spring of 1986. I was only 24 years of age! I'm probably older now that Eddie was then!! We play with the Metropool Orkest, directed by the late Rogier van Otterloo.

  • And I was only 50 then. Ah, to be 24 again - or at least sleep with someone who is.

I am forever amazed how most Dutch people speak and write English better - more accurately, intelligibly and grammatically - than most English people.

As a curiosity you might let to check out 'Graham Lyons" "Lyons C Clarinet".

  • Great clip, thanks for posting! I think one of the key strenghts of the way thesong is preformed is the alternation of the different styles of improvisation. I don't want to compare the guys but just enjoy their unique approaches, and like the song very much for that. A very good preformance by both of them.

  • beside the obvious difference in approach and period interest the most obvious difference between the two is that eddie has been at the game longer. both are great players. great vid thanks for posting

  • both are excelent!

  • many thanks for posting this video - it is burning!

  • Also, many thanks for Bernard for putting this video up here. Bernard you had a chance to do what we all want.

  • Eddie rules!! It's really unfair to compare..he leaves the other guy behind remarkably... the other guy sounds like from the old school whereas eddie is the innovator (harmonically, sound, rhythm+phrasing you name it he's got it)

  • Michael, you are correct. Bernard plays with fun and spirit harking to Benny Goodman but Eddie is far ahead of everyone, not just this guy.

  • Excellent work from both artists, but Bernard swings better. Excellent control of the high register and very melodic ad libs! Thanks to Bernard for posting this video!

    the very best to all

    mitch

  • Both are very accomplished and it's unfair to compare them. They each take a different approach. Whether you like one or the other is a matter of personal taste. If forced to compare, I would say Eddie's playing is more controlled and he physically moves less, whereas Bernard is more dramatic in his playing and physical movements, pushing the envelope of control. Their articulation is quite different. Without visual cues such as video, it would be their articulation that makes each distinctive.

  • Stunning! Absolutely world class, i enjoyed this one very much

  • Very good. But check out the video of Dave Bannett and Ron Hockett on the same tune with the Jim Cullum band. Even better.

  • Just another reason to be glad I made the switch from clarinet to tenor at an early age.

  • WOW!

  • Absolutely beautiful, artistic work by Eddie and Bernard! I hope they made more of these sessions.

  • This is THE ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE of jazz-clarinetplaying!

Never heard anything like it and I probably won't in the future either...

  • Forensic musicology be banished

    They was havin' fun no?

  • I agree with Abrandsma.

  • eddie daniels is a great player and with his own brand and style of playing but to my ear bernard nailed it he's hot as hell an swings his ass off

  • Eddie is more intellectually satisfying but Bernard is way more emotionally satisfying!

  • ABrandsma, you are allowed to say and you are allowed to be wrong.

  • i loved it!

  • Niesamowite! Zgrać się w takim tempie... Coś pięknego :)

  • Impressive!

  • Thank you very much for uploading this one. Interesting to note that in the comments everybody is talking about Mr. Daniels..... To my ears Mr. Berkhout plays even better in this Benny Goodman swing style. Of course I'm not allowed to say (or even think)such a thing, but it is my honest opinion. Whereas Mr Daniels is a bit further in harmonic sophistication, I prefer the drive, fire and tone of Mr. Berkhout, who also finishes his phrases better.

    Thanks again, very interesting video!

  • I saw Eddie at the Rochester (NY) International Jazz Festival with piano, bass and drums....absolutely fantastic! He did a few on tenor but played mostly clarinet. He hung around afterwards and talked to fans, signed CDs, etc. Great concert all around.

  • I saw Eddie live for the first time a week ago....unbelievable !

  • Where, with who? Please!

  • Eddie just kills it, and such a refined ear. And superlative technique.

  • I agree

  • oh my goodness. thats some amazing playing. thanks for vid!

  • Eddie demuestra siempre la prestancia y el portamento de su sonido

  • Damn...orz

    thx for the video

  • Eddie, so smooth and relaxed. The other is good too.

  • superlativo!!!!
