I'd change the tyres, or not drive it! In fact with that low mileage, driving it would be a sacrilege. It has a boot rack similar to your '88. Unusual shaped cars - the front fenders remind me somehow of the Pink Panthermobile! AMC are a bit of a lost treasure really, as long as you don't count the Pacer. (LOL!)
@rx6180 Hey, Mick! Yeah, AMC was a player in this market, but I think they felt they had to be different to attract sales...and that is a typical dilemma for the owners of cars like these...rare and you don't want to risk them on the road. But driving is most of the fun...! Thanks! :) Jack
This was my favorite Javelin ever. I had a friend with one in '73. I love that front fender flare. Thought that was an awesome stying addition at the time.
Javelin won at least a couple of Trans Am champioships. In my opinion I think Javelin was the nicest looking of all the pony cars. This one was the 2nd generation that started in 71. That dash is really outstanding. A Javelin would sure be an attention getter especially one like this in like new condistion.
@cheddyrod Hey, Chester! I think it definitely is a classy car...and I would agree that at least the first generation Javelin would qualify as best looking. Just too bad that AMC didn't have the resources to continue to offer this car! Thanks! :) Jack
Jack, Exceptionally nice original car. Dual white stripe tires were popular in the early '70's; amazing that these are originals! The biggest detractor for Javelin was a lack of anything bigger than a 401 engine; it lacked the street cred of it's counterparts like Boss Mustang and "Hemi Cuda/Challenger." AMC's build quality was spotty as well. This one appears to be uniquely equipped; the vinyl roof and luggage rack are rare extras but no air or power equipment. Wonder what SST stood for?
@jferg7159 Hey, Joe! Good point about the lack of a engine bigger than a 401. And the car was a bit unusual in trim details inside and outside..it may have turned some prospective owners off. I can find no automotive meaning for SST, but it might be a reference to "supersonic transport"...on a conscious or unconscious level! Cars are always trying to be airplanes! LOL! Thanks! :) Jack
This is absolutely fantastic, it's a museum piece, just original 6000 miles ! .... I think its fairly unlikely that anyone will ever see another like this, its rare to actually ever see a Javelin at all now let alone one as fresh as this !
I absolutely love the Javelin, it always was a great car I thought ! ... Such a shame about American Motors, they built some excellent cars, the '72 Matador is still another favorite of mine :)
@drewerz01 Hey, Mike! I agree...I doubt that there are any other Javelins of this year with this kind of low mileage..and everything looks perfect on it. A testimony of what an independent car company could achieve...pity that it's history now. Thanks! :) Jack
Nice car, the only major design aspect, I don't like is the front humps on the fenders, its like AMC wanted some garish Corvette design on the car, the '70 and older Javelins and AMXs are very well designed, I guess I would consider the earlier ones, "one hit wonders" but the car in the video is still nice :)
@BRENTHENRY1989 Hey, Brent! Yeah, those fenders were a bit controversial at the time...but I think those that bought the car felt some attachment to its unique styling. Notice the dash..really unlike any other car with two glove compartments...the were definitely different at AMC! Thanks! :) Jack
Very nice Jack. I've always been a fan of this car, more so than the shorter wheel base AMX. When I was seventeen in 1972, I was driving my mother's 72 GTO through the desert in Arizona while pacing with one of these 390ci Javelins at a steady 140 mph. We both got pulled over and the Arizona Highway Patrol let my go with a warning, "don't get caught speeding in Arizona again."
@1SteedRunner Hey, Steve! Wow! Certainly both very capable machines! I'm assuming your mother didn't learn of your venture! :D Too bad you weren't in Wyoming....I think the limit there was "reasonable and proper"! Depends who was doing the reasoning! One thing easily decided that, however..if you were in an accident, it wasn't reasonable and proper! LOL! Thanks! :D Jack
@JohnFromSpace Hey, John! Very true...I don't think they ever got the credit they deserved..to have lasted so long as an independent, and to have come up with a great, competitive design like this one is simply amazing! Thanks! :) Jack
