I'm not a fan of this rendition, but in the context of the show, I think she could knock different one out of the park. This sounds like a heavy handed cabaret selection. Donna Murhpy is one of the best interpreter's of Sondheim's work, but this is far from her best work.
CHILLS! SHE SING THIS AS NO OTHER HAS EVER DONE IT BEFORE!
Her vocal range is unbelievable and her delivery is mind blowing!
From The King And I,Passion ,a rendition of :hit Me With A Hot Note" to make any other singer turn religious, then takes on a Disney film and makes it comes to life and gives the performance of a lifetime with only her voice!
My mother never sang to me like she sang! Ms.Murphy is a once in a lifetime talent and we are all fortunate she has graced us with it in our time!

I love Donna Murphy - so brilliant. And I'm sure if I was watching her I would be mesmerized. But she suffers vocally in this one and I find it distracting - pitchy and tight and flat at the wrong moments. Of course her acting (At least what I can hear in her voice) is great, as usual - but not my favorite Donna Murphy moment.
@maxwellryerson Even with some minor pitch problems, I'll take Donna Murphy--an actress who can sing wonderfully--over a singer trying to act...especially when it's Sondheim. Technique and vocal precision take a backseat to characterization and story when it comes to his material, and while singers occasionally do justice to his songs, an actor like Bernadette Peters or Murphy will come out on top every time, as singers tend to become too self-indulgent.
She has a remarkable gift for acting the songs she sings. There's more to singing than just releasing pretty notes. She connects with the character so deeply. It is a remarkable gift.

Too much affect. The pauses are overdone. This is not the way the song is meant to be song. She does it torchy and it's rather cliche. Watch Dorothy Collins do it as it was meant to be done. Murphy's version is less than second rate.
@isyou39 your comments are less than second rate and cliche. Whats your musical background? And how would you know how the song was MEANT to be sung? Did you write it? Donna performs this song beautifully...just the way it was MEANT to be.
@isyou39 This is torch song. And Murphy is one of the best Sondheim interpreters of all-time, and I can guarantee that Sondheim was probably very happy with her performance of this number. What about this is "rather cliche"? It is a powerful, nerve-shattering rendition of what is one of Sondheim's best songs. Dorothy Collins' version is incredible, but Murphy's is just as great (and even more impressive as it's out of context).
It is absolutely not less than second rate. It is top notch.
@isyou39 Oh really? YOU do better, then. Donna Murphy is probably one of the best Sondheim singers on earth, and apart from Bernadette Peters could kick anyone's ass for that title. Frankly, songs have many different paths for interpretation, and this one can be taken into a jazzier, torch song considering its place in 'Follies' to begin with, much like many Sondheim ballads.
Love the progression of the emotion, she doesn't let herself slip into melodramatics. All of it seems appropriate, and still incredibly stirring. Dear Donna Murphy-- how are you perfect.
If the Kennedy Center production transfers to Broadway, this will, most assuredly, be the song that earns Bernadette Peters her long-overdue 3rd Tony.
There aren't many modern musical theatre actresses that can sing Sondheim with this much power and emotion. I can think of four: Donna Murphy, Vanessa Williams, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone. Aside from that, there aren't a whole lot. Says a lot about the talent of those four.
@PeterBluth I agree, those four, in particular, Bernadette Peters, really connect to the material Sondheim writes. In her prime, though, Angela Lansbury definitely would've been a part of that group.
@boynamedalexxx That's part of the reason why I love Bernadette as much as I do. And, I agree about Angela. Considering that Angela won a Tony for Mama Rose she can deliver on the lyrics of Sondhiem.
@PeterBluth Not to mention her performances in "Anyone Can Whistle", "A Little Night Music", and, what I believe to be her greatest performance, Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd".
@justasondheimbaby i don't know... i don't remember saying that haha. but bernadette's gonna be in a revival of follies i think in may so there might be videos from that when it opens.
A little too self-indulgent for my taste but still well done.
