Men usually wait until other men do something that they consider stupid before they start with the insults. Women don't have to do anything other than exist online in order to be insulted. It's not based off of playing skill, off of level/status or anything else...just the fact that they are FEMALE and ONLINE. The issue (to me anyways) isn't in WHAT is being said, but HOW. I have a thicker skin than most, but even I think that logging on and immediately being griefed ruins the experience.

I can't handle the way people talk in online matches, but the way they act when a woman joins makes me terribly sick. That's one of the reasons why I don't play online games on consoles (I know in PC it happens too, but my experience says it happens less). And it's not only a problem with women, once I was at a friend's house and we joined a match where everyone but us was American. Since we started talking in Spanish, they tried to insult us. So many assholes, so few virtual-bullets...

Saw this panel at PAX. When it comes down to it, none of us would put up with this in person and netiquette needs to be reintroduced to the world. If you see people being creepy or downright awful online, report it or call it out. As a moderator for a living, I can say it does get handled and dealt with and escalated if needs be, but only if we can see it, weigh it, and action it.
