This used to be normal in the NHL, if a team was down a couple goals in the last couple minutes you could almost guarantee a bench clearing brawl....well this one is a bit extreme with fans involved and being only the first period.

I do and I actually remember this game, Ken Dryden was brought up shortly after this but were we ever lucky to grow up watching these great Bruins teams and also Fred Cusick took over from Don Earl this year too!

Dunphy was the longtime "voice of boxing" and called the "Friday Nights Fights" in the 1950's.
What was never mentioned in the live broadcast (from which this clip was taken) was that numerous fights broke out all over Boston Garden. Several fans were arrested.

I live in new Hampshire and grew up in San Diego, and hockey is just as big as baseball or football. The NHL has more American teams than Canadian, and if a three hour long left-hand-turn is your idea of excitement..... BORING!!!! I will stick to the nearly non-stop, hard hitting, speed, and aggression that is HOCKEY!!!

@pookerville What are the big games in the USA? American Football, baseball and basketball... games you are virtualy the only ones to play in the world. Many Olympic events aren't even presented live as broadcasters wait for the results: if you win they show it, if you lose they don't bother showing the event. Many nations suck at soccer but still broadcast the World Cup in primetime because they understand that is is the biggest sports event in the world.

The thing was that if 5 didnt keep swinging (probably as well as the Bruin who he kept down), that probably would of been that, and the game goes on with nothing happening other than 5 each for fighting.
