Imagine if now the people are busy minding their own business; and the hurricane siren goes off! The houses have no underground shelters and the fire chief yells; "Everybody get to the lighthouse; I repeat; get into your cars and seek shelter inside the Cape Charles lighthouse!" The people get into their cars and drive to Cape Charles lighthouse. They all pour into the tower and lock the door behind them!
@Umpqua1012 Thats What Im Talking About Buddy The Cape Charles Light House Has seen Many Hurricanes & Tropical Storms & North Easters Mate Thats the Truth
@Umpqua1012 Yes It does Buddy Still Strong Its The Second Tallest Light House In The USA Other Than Hatteras Which Is 208 Feet And Cape Charles This little-known and rarely-visited tower is the second tallest U.S. lighthouseAt 191 Feet Aint That Something
@WorldWideLighthouses This old lighthouse has seen many tropical storms; and look; it still stands! Besides; it's those skeletal legs that keep it up.
Assateague would also make an excellent improvised hurricane shelter! Currituck and Oak Island would also make excellent improvised hurricane shelters!
But how did you get inside that place if It is not open to the public!? But it would make a great shelter from hurricanes! At 198 feet; it should hold half a small town! Many people took shelter in lighthouses; Like Old Baldy and Ocracoke! I think Cape Hatteras would also make a great improvised hurricane shelter! Cape Lookout Bodie Island; Old and New Cape Henry lighthouses....
I have seen the inside of this lighthouse! And boy oh boy; does the interior need some MAJOR TENDER LOVING CARE!!!!!! There is rust; dirt; dust; paint chippings and all sorts of other microbes!
Just want to know, since it is so old is this one of the haunted light houses? And how long did it take you to climb those stairs?HAHA gotta tell me your friend in PA-LinM<3
It took me a little while about A half an Hour Lin But you gout to remember I Did this kind of work for a living Working For The power Companies Being A Union Boilermaker Everywhere we work it is any where from 50 Ft. Elevation To 400 Ft. Elevation ! And If It Was Haunted I Have God on my side To Help fight off Haunted Ghosts ! I do Believe in Spirits & Ghosts !You Could Say Im Superstitious !

@kvusmc Yes it does. They must of built this thing to withstand hurricanes. People have used Ocracoke and Old Baldy as a shelter during hurricanes!
Umpqua1012 3 months ago
@Umpqua1012 People seriously take shelter in this tower?
WorldWideLighthouses 3 months ago
@WorldWideLighthouses If it can withstand hurricanes; yes they would!
Umpqua1012 3 months ago
@Umpqua1012 That seems crazy. It doesn't look like the sturdiest of towers...and wouldn't it make more sense to stay in a smaller building?

Not so much the Old Cape Henry light as it is structually weak! The New Cape Henry lighthouse will; despite being made out of cast iron.
