  • I rode that in ‘68. Amazing ride went through Snake River Canyon in Colorado, with turns so tight you could practically reach out and touch the engine as it went by in the opposite direction.

  • MAN this area has changed so much

  • Interesting now that Amtrak's incarnation of the train has now run 5 years longer than what CB&Q/D&RGW/WP ran.

  • Thanks for posting this valuable piece of history! Although I was born in a CZ town--Provo, Utah, I grew up in Iowa as well lived in Sacramento for a year--1978.

  • Wow old shot of the Zephyr and Sac sub. I think I heard that the old depot is now the Old Spaghetti Factory in Sacramento. That's an awesome shot. I have a ton of shots from that very place just about 40 years in the future though.

  • Do you have any other railfan films from Sacramento that you can upload????

  • There is a little more railroad footage mixed in with all the home movies that my Dad shot when we lived in Sacramento many, many years ago. I plan on putting it all together in one video someday.

  • It was my Dad! Thanks for finding it Jenn!

  • my grandpa was the engineer on that train. he and his friend did that final run together. i was thrilled to find this video!!! he is now deceased, but this was wonderful to see him from someone else's perspective

  • That is amazing that your grandpa was engineer.

  • He's stopping at what is ths Spaghetti Factory now, but trains still roll by on what is now the UP Sacramento Subdivision

  • If you ask me, that was the most beautiful train ever run in the world, ever. Feel free to check out some of my present day videos of the Cali Zephyr... :)

  • A beautiful little home movie.

  • Wow, March 21, 1970, at the Sacramento WP depot. I was there! I'm in that crowd somewhere as an eight-year-old. I remember it just like the film, well, almost.

  • cool I am in Oakland now and was walking around and found the old WP depot its now law offices but still very pretty on the outside you were so luckey to have been there for that I envy you LOL...I will be traviling on a restored California Zephyr sleeper in a few days the Silver Quail that is now in private car service.. I love the old Cal Z however the VIA Rail Canadian looks almost identical to the old Cal Z

  • That sounds pretty cool. Every now and again I see a restored CZ car or two on Amtrak but never catch the name of them. You'll have to post about your trip on the Silver Quail. I remember quite a bit about my CZ trip, to include the train coming to a screaching halt somewhere along the route where the D&RGW engines had been put on, and myself and many passengers being tossed to the floor! We had been moving along at 70-80 MPH at that point. Not sure what happened but we were going again soon.

  • It's a Spaghetti place now not offices

  • very interesting I thought i saw names on there for a law firm very interesting hmm nonetheless its still standing at least

  • and the trains still roll by there

  • what station are you talking about the one I was refering too was the old WP depot in Oakland Ca and there is no track there anymore there is track a few blocks over on Embarkadero street but not in front of the old WP depot

  • are you talking about in Sacramento i was talking about Oakland

  • Sacramento, sorry, I misunderstood

  • Hi, I'm putting together a DVD of home movies of the CZ RGZ,, and will transfer yours free if I can use it.

Ron Main Line Motion Pictures hunt the web-site, send me e-mail

  • For some reason your video stops after 9 seconds.

If you want a great film-to-video transfer, check with Blue Cloud Video. They do a great job. The difference is remarkable.

  • Rare footage. Thanks once again!

  • wondered where in sac this was all taking place; didn't recognize til the end it's same building where the old spaghetti factory restaurant is now...19th & j/k!

  • wow, that's great to see this historic footage. Looks like regular 8mm Kodachrome. I've taken the modern Zephyr about ten times, now, and looking forward to doing it again.
