Got tickets to see VAN HALEN at the garden!!!! I am like, so psyched right now I can't wait!!!!!! Even if the reunion was with Sammy i'd still be psyched cuz I'm a REAL Van Halen fan who loves both Sammy and Dave!!!!
I was at this show in DC. One thing Ive always wondered. Were all of those speakers turned on in the back? Or was it just used as a prop? I lost my hearing for about three days after seeing this show -- I swear I could feel wind from pumping from either the drums or speakers -- I was like in the 5th row... any thoughts?
Not to beat a dead horse but listen to this and you can't deny Michael Anthony's impact with the background vocals. It is a big part of the VAN HALEN SOUND!
As someone has already said, DLR VH is not only about the music, it's about the showmanship and brashness! I never cared for Sammy as singer and to me their best music was with DLR as frontman.
@gladiatorfilm AMEN BROTHA!! nobody, and I DO MEAN NOOOOOOOOOOO-BODY can even come CLOSE to touching DLR as Van-Halen's Frontman!!!! HE WAS..........................PURE HEART and SOUL,"PARTY-BOY-ROCK-N-ROLL" of the 80's!! PERIOD!!
I worked in a mall store that sold spandex and clothing and rock posters etc. in the mid 80's and this bootleg concert was brought to me on VHS - almost no one had this and I used to plop it in the vhs player and it would come on the TV which was out in the store. Small TV but when this intro came on all the kids would look up thinking 'who's this?' look on their faces. When the lights hit eddie all else would stop and everyone would watch this in amazement cause it was so rare
Dave would probably pop a hammy if he attempted to jump off the riser like that today.
You don't see many bands with lead singers who just sing and strut around the stage. Nowadays, they all play guitar as they sing. But back then, guys like Roth, Ozzy, Ian Gillan, they just concentrated on belting it out. Call it the Robert Plant/Roger Daltrey influence
5th row center stage...was at this tour...IT WAS LOUD... IT WAS HARDCORE..IT WAS AWESOME...GOT YOU CRANKED UP...if you never got to see Van Halen of this era live...shit,you really missed one of the best LIVE band shows at the time...THEY REALLY WERE THAT GREAT....ENGRAINED IN MY SOUL FOREVER
A Van Halen show was more than a regular concert. It was the highlight of the year. All other rock bands pale in comparison.Unless you lived it you"ll never understand how cool it really was.
You nailed it. VH with Roth wasn't about just the music....heck, a recording of this probably wouldn't be very good if you like things to sound just like the record....it was about the SHOW, and the EXPERIENCE. Dave put on a show, and that didn't mean he just stood there and tried to sing every verse just like the album. If you want to hear it sound like the record, then listen to the record. If you wanted spectacle, you wanted Van Halen LIVE.
Gives me chills. I saw them on this tour in NYC at MSG. Listen to the crowd, they're going nuts! I remember seeing them on the Fair Warning tour (also at MSG) and the crowd was so loud that it took me like 15-20 seconds to figure out what song they opened with because I couldn't hear it! (it was "On Fire" BTW)
That`s how you open a show!!!! Diamond Dave ...Feel bad for the kids, they have Bieber and Beyaonce and all that crap out there now..THIS IS MUSIC !!!
saw them in Halifax NS Canada 1981, Winnepeg, Calgary and Edmonton 1984, 1990 Vancouver and Seattle, 1993 Atlanta, 1995 Edmonton, Vancouver, Seattle. Ten shows and all of them were great.
Ed sounded really good here. They really pushed the tempo big time though - very rushed - adrenaline I guess. Some of Dave's twirls/toe kicks to the head were a big much, but yeah you could feel the energy - no doubt.
They are the greatest live act ever- PERIOD! With that said, you can see this is he beginning of the end for the MIGHTY VH!!! Dave is starting to show signs of his LSD abuse (Lead Singers Disease). He was becoming too much of the show over the rest of the band, which all three were/are the best at what they do! LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!!! LET'S GET SOME NEW MUSIC AND TOUR GOING!
1) What? Is it real? You bet your fkn ass it's real what do you think think this?Quiet Riot? That was his response when someone from the crowd asked him if the bottle of booze he was holding was real.Of course he may have pretended that someone asked him that question
2) Another Roth comment: Looking at someone in the front row he said: "Hey there's some stupid motherf----r squirting water at my face! That's ok 'cause after the show I'm gonna F his girlfriend.
1) Michael Anthony was playing a bass shaped like a Jack Daniel's bottle
2) At one point Roth came out wearing a Canadiens shirt and said: "Hey I understand you guys are winning the hockey games!" The show was soon after Montreal knocked Quebec out of the playoffs. There was a big brawl in the last game that came to be known as the Good Friday's Night Massacre.
3) Again Roth said: "Hey Montreal you're a great crowd, you make Dallas,Texas look like Pakistan!"
this is awesome but the song has so much more power when they play it slower like the album version, this is almost a different song at this speed. by the way if you want to hear one of my bands songs, click on the blue word to your left.
saw VH on this tour in BOSTON in summer of 84!!!!!!!!!!!! they just dont have concerts like this anymore!!!! what a shame!!!!!! but im glad i was there!!!!!!!!!!
When Lights went on and Eddie started kicking ass, my heart stopped for a second. God why i was born in 90-ies and not a decade earlier and in America, then i would have had a chance to witness the magic of Eddies Guitar. Eddie Is the greatest thing that happened to the music world, i don't mean the rock music, i mean From Mozart 2 2pac, Nobody is bigger then Eddie Van Halen!!!
Let me tell ya - I saw this tour at just 15 years old! Hartford, CT on March 29th and the only reason I got to go is because a sick snow storm hit New England that day and one of my friend had to bail so I got the ticket. Another friends Father drove us and waited at Chuck's drinking until we got out. I was a HUGE fan from 1979 and VH1 was my first real album........so lucky to have seen them all original with Diamond Dave.......awesome stuff - thanks!
This has to be Rock N Roll's greatest opening of all time...i mean...the God Eddie cranking out the strings...Mad anthony's backing vocals......Alex....and of course Roth.....Paramount...simply Paramount!!! Seen them in Winnepeg...same tour, I as well, have the ticket stub still......17.50, 30 rows back......What a show!!!!!
I saw this concert in Augusta, Georgia. I was a senior in High school. Seen lots of concerts this was the best. ZZ TOP gave them a run for there money
I saw them the next month in May 1984, Portland, OR. I was 17 yrs old., best concert I've ever seen since. My ticket cost $12.50, it was my B-day present. One I'll never forget.
his connection to Micheal was so cold(when you see how Vince treats Nikki) I mean David rarely ever connect to him or shows attention. on Eddie EDDIE EDDIE. Dav misses a lot about the concept of living warm hearts and of quality. Its all IM THE PARTY HEY FU SAMMY

THis is like Warrent acting like Crue. But yet with the Crue not having any hits and then Warrant or Poison having the hits . To where it is never even considered that his or this image is contrived.
Yea great tour/show! I was 14 at the time when I saw them on this tour. The band Autograph were the opening act. Sorry to say for Autograph fans they were booed off the stage (people were throwing things at them too) and everyone started chanting "Van Halen, Van Halen, Van Halen!" I've never seen people booing an open act to get off until then and never since. I have to locate my ticket stub, but I think the ticket was $13.50!....lol Good Times! Good Music! Good Ticket Prices! :-)
Listen to that crowd! They had more youth, energy, balls, and presence with Diamond Dave. When Sammy joined they looked more like Dads or something, laid back, less exciting.
@theShowStopper321 ..in a sense you're right. Songs and songwriting were different when Sammy joined. Eddie himself was aiming to do things a bit different anyways. Don't forget as well that say on a tour with Sammy such as the Balance or F.U.C.K tours, many fans were not 15, 18, 21, or 24 anymore either.
@theShowStopper321 ..don't get me wrong, I liked the DLR years as well. But it's hard tro find lots of performances with Dave actually singing really good....album wise, VH were classic, they were gods. I also liked Sammy as well...Sammy is a great singer live.
That's one of the coolest concert beginnings I've ever seen in my life. Eddie shows all of his godness with his guitar and Diamond Dave reaches the skies.
To be fair, he does sing a few times on this vid. Not many, I grant you, but then Unchained's verses are pretty much spoken word on the record anyway.
I wanna be first 2 say this dave on coke was so way out of time being musician but its ok but fuk the rest guys took it down tho this is way too fast maybe the others were on coke too.
anyways buy my grannys analfuk video 145 yr old sexy as hell bushy ass video at
Saw them in FL on this tour. Incredible when the lights go down and Ed starts wailing. Concerts nowadays are not one-tenth as loud as these guys were...then Dave does his patented leap...insane. All these current "musicians" would be broke without their auto-tune
@lonnieg5 im a kid from nowdays, well born in the 90s and i listen to everthing but todays music! :D Do you worry they're many *classics* lovers in todays new generation trying to bring it back XD
1:01 golden moment, man I wish I had seen this tour. In April '84 they played only two shows in Detroit - at Cobo Arena and they opened with this song. Two shows at Cobo is only 25,000 total people. They could have sold out 5 for sure. The 2 shows sold out in like a half hour
And you can be sure they saved up alot of energy for L.A. Forum...same as N.Y. madison Square...those were the ELITE venues at the time, by far. L.A. Forum was the end all, be all. Stones sold it out five nights in a row, OWNED!
yeah man! Not to make you jealous but I saw both those shows for the 1984 tour at cobo...and front row for the DD tour the yr before.....highlight of my life!
I saw 2 shows from this tour. I paid 13.75 for the tickets which I still have. A priceless memory. I hope I live to see the music world come close to what we had in the 70s, and 80s
all the tempo jabs don't fly with me...Eddie starts the song so the tempo is all his {but its supposed to be live; ever hear of adreneline; it can fire you up just like coke can} and Dave has no need to sing the choruses he wrote them you should be singin' 'em; besides this is Diamond Dave he is the KING of improv and he don't need to remember words; he's "freewheeling" ...bottom line: best band EVER...99 sold out shows on this tour...nuff said!!!!
1. Quite possibly THE best intro of all time (spotlights; announcer; Eddie alone in the spolight; Dave's leap...the crowd goes wild....). Amazing. 2. DLR was arguably THE best-ever frontman. His influence on the band's image & showmanship was as important as Eddie's. 3. Alex was MONSTER on the drums. 4. Mike influenced the sound of the live shows a great deal. The One; The Only: Mighty Van Halen.
led zeppelin can eat shit van halen would eat them pussy's up alive van halen cant be touched by anyone and i do mean anyone this includes you to led zeppelin
you were not even close to the band or musicians that van halen were and still are end of story!
This was why the whole concert scene of the 80's was an event. Skip school. Drive to the arena... Parking lot with your buds. Wait through the opening act.......all for a buildup to a HUGE opening like that.
If an alien landed on Earth and wanted to see a vintage 80's concert intro---- just show em this.
i was in Winnepeg...2 nights before this...absolutely mind boggling...blitzkrieg guitar work...thee best show ive ever seen. No one could touch them at this time....amazing group...amazing time! Cheers
la puta que los pario a todos los forros que se la den de rockers y no admiten que VH, es una maquina. Papa, aprendan lo que es rock carajo, limpiense los oidos, Diamond, Edie y Cia, son exelentes. No va a ver otro VH
Dave is the biggest tool on earth, (he'll even admit that) but motherfucker can that boy ROCK!!! VH wasn't shit w/o THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK YEAH!! DIAMOND DAVE!!!

Wow, really cool man. Do you think u will upload the entire gig sometime? Will check out your other videos!

Someone needs to tell Roth to sing at least once in the song and not just talk it. lol :)
jflor98 1 year ago
To be fair, he does sing a few times on this vid. Not many, I grant you, but then Unchained's verses are pretty much spoken word on the record anyway.

SuperSummer71 1 year ago 7
Saw them in FL on this tour. Incredible when the lights go down and Ed starts wailing. Concerts nowadays are not one-tenth as loud as these guys were...then Dave does his patented leap...insane. All these current "musicians" would be broke without their auto-tune
chignutsak 1 year ago
i saw both nights at the hollywood scumatorium. 13 years old, blew me away!!

not in a row, but five nights on tour in a row--a few breaks in between.

Yes, I agree, the kids today are so spoon-fed sugar coated SHIT. it is sad that they have no voice of their own.
COSMICBUM 2 years ago
Pure magic. Nothing will ever come close to this again. I feel really sorry for the kids nowadays and the pitiful music they listen to.

I was fortunate, I saw this tour at the LA Forum a month after this show. I stil have the ticket stub. :)
Yo!
YoBroMan 2 years ago 5
And you can be sure they saved up alot of energy for L.A. Forum...same as N.Y. madison Square...those were the ELITE venues at the time, by far. L.A. Forum was the end all, be all. Stones sold it out five nights in a row, OWNED!

I saw 2 shows from this tour. I paid 13.75 for the tickets which I still have. A priceless memory. I hope I live to see the music world come close to what we had in the 70s, and 80s

Oh fuck what I would do to be at that show!
VanHalenBand 2 years ago
all the tempo jabs don't fly with me...Eddie starts the song so the tempo is all his {but its supposed to be live; ever hear of adreneline; it can fire you up just like coke can} and Dave has no need to sing the choruses he wrote them you should be singin' 'em; besides this is Diamond Dave he is the KING of improv and he don't need to remember words; he's "freewheeling" ...bottom line: best band EVER...99 sold out shows on this tour...nuff said!!!!
sloelick009 2 years ago
Greatest opening I have ever seen. Roth's leap is off the hook incredible.

coolest intro ever

Goosebumps!
Smartskaft2 2 years ago 6

Great days indeed.
