The vast majority of Americans don't have enough education or awareness to know who to vote for on their own. In this culture of American Idol and reality TV, people don't have a clue of who their congressmen and Senators are. Their lives are regulated pretty much by what they see and hear on TV from a bunch of overpaid, equally uneducated celebrities. I think you're asking for much.
