There are some real pearls of wisdom in this lovely film and some very charming dialog as well. I love classic films for their clever dialog....why don't people talk to one another like this any more?
This is a great video! One of the other great quotes from this movie that I always remember is from Elwood. Dr. Chumley declares, "This sister of yours is at the bottom of a conspiracy against you." Instead of becoming angry, Elwood solemnly replies, "My sister did all that in one afternoon. That Veta certainly is a whirlwind, isn't she?" Elwood express loving admiration instead of "righteous indignation." I wish I could emulate this.
I have purchased this movie on dvd several times and I treasure it. Especially the quote, "In this world, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me." I concur. I still want a giant pookah friend to call my own, though. lol And maybe, the pookah would say to me, "I prefer you, too."
This is the philosophy I aim to emulate every day, I, too, was smart for so many years. Never got me far with anything I truly valued. Elwood--you're my hero. Or, rather, Mary Chase, who authored both the play and film.
Character actor Cecil Kellway played"Dr.Bill Chumley" of
"Chumley's Rest"here. And Bit King is right..there is no way that Mr.Anderson's work in that third and forgetable tv adaptation of"Harvey"will ever top Mr.Stewart's performance in the 1950 movie version and the second 1970's NBC TV/"Hallmark Hall Of Fame"version.

It is scary how I came to the same conclusion. Oh so pleasant is so much better. And I do quote author Mary Coyle Chase on it. Bless you, Ms. Chase. Rest in peace.
If ever you are in a bad mood and the world has got you down......Just go meet Harvey and Elwood P. Dowd and I promise that your day will get better and much more pleasant. Great film,Great role!
why bring nasty political antagonism into a discussion of a very pleasant movie like Harvey? There are plenty of pages on youtube for political arguments and insults, if that's what actually turns your crank.
The only one HATING here is you! Besides you probably just making it up because Tom Hanks was quoted as saying his favorite President was Ronald Reagan, who if my memory serves me correctly, was a right-wing republican.
I absolutely love this movie and just caught recently on TCM! I grew up loving this movie and at 50 that hasn't changed. And the loving Jimmy Stewart part hasn't changed either! Jimmy you are very much missed! Is Tom Hanks the Jimmy Stewart of the last 20 years or what?
I love this quote, it's so innocent and yet so true. I used to see this movie when I was 7 years old. And I had lost the movie, I watched it again and it's so fabulous. It says things that wash you of all the dirt of the life and leave you with hope and joy. Oh boy I love it!
It never fails...Every time I watch this movie I feel inspired, refreshed and hopeful. Jimmy Stewart has that effect on me and this is one of my all time favorite flix!!!
Too bad all of us didn't have a magical pucca like Harvey that understands and doesn't judge...Or maybe we do and just don't know it.
Thats why I hang out with a group of friends that are dumber than a bag of hammers.....but very pleasant to be around.....and you may quote me. -D. M.
One of the alltime underrated movies. Jimmy Stewart is probably most remembered for playing George Bailey in IAWL, but his performance as Elwood P. Dowd is brilliant. It's immeasurably better than Harry Anderson's, that's for sure.
i love this movie...i am actually going to play doctor chumley in a play at school for a one act comeptition...it's going to be great...although i do think i'd do a better job of elwood than the guy they got :P
"Years ago, my mother used to say to me, she'd say: 'In this world, Elwood,' she always used to call me Elwood. 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh, so smart or oh, so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. And you can quote me." - Elwood P. Dowd (James Stewart)
SIGH...I love that movie and THAT MAN. My favorite line in the movie is "I've wrestled with reality for thirty five years, doctor, and I'm happy to state that I finally won out over it."
James Stewart Caught my Attention when i was home sick and i had watched the Philadelphia Story. I have been in love ever since. I saw this movie and fell once more.Surprisingly enough Stewart did not like his acting in this movie. He prefered his acting in the play more. I love Jimmy Stewart.
