Im new to heirloom gardening so first I wanted to say thank you so much for posting this video! I sincerely apreciate your time and effort in making this video. I have not planted lettuce yet, but will be in the spring. I was wondering when does the lettice turn to the little flower thingy? Is it at the end of the harvest or in the beginning? Thank you for your time again!
@gregos350 When lettuce goes to seed, the leaf that you eat turns extreamly bitter and nearly un-edible. It produces a thick sticky milk like sap that is also, bitter to the extream.
They do not take up more resources, but if you desire seed for next year, you will give up growing space that could be used in another way.
@AcresOfReed OOOHHHH okay that makes sense. thus the reason why you only let one plant make seeds instead of getting seeds from all your plants. gotcha. im planting some lettuce seeds tomorrow, and i have literally planted nothing in my entire life, so i was just looking up videos about lettuce plants
@xviperboax We only planted the lettuce we wanted to go to seed in cups. It was done to keep the seeds from growing in the main beds to cut down on weeding and made it easier to harvest the seeds.
It worked out very well for us, we have enough seed for years. We ate the lettuce leaves as they grew in the cups too. It was sweet and crisp.
What a blessing thank you God's love to you & your's :)

you said "we let the lettuce grow to seed" why wouldnt you let it grow that long? does the seed take up extra resources or something?
