German language education is pretty advanced compared to other countries like England or France, I've met students from several schools and they are only able to speak English/French and maybe a little bit of another language.

We're learning English since the third grade, a second language MUST be chosen in grade 7 if you've got good marks (Three "ways" of school, the best one must choose another language, the others may decide).

I think that its good that English is commonly a secondary or primary language in countries, because it makes just all social interactions between countries much easier. I don't think we should force our culture on other countries, because a unique culture is what make other countries so cool to visit and study, but having one universal language is ideal. its just coincidence that America is the new guy on the block, therefore we don't have much of a history.

I think difficutly of language depends on one's mother tongue. Two of the top 10 hardest languages in the world to learn are Hungarian and Polish. I have a feeling that the others must include Russian, Chinese, Japanese, not sure what else, but I know it's not English.
