I think that target drills (against a cushioned shield) are good exercises for developing technique ( accuracy and speed). But you should also learn to side kick and back side kick against fixed target hold on a wall (to improve control impact and momentum) and against a heavy punching bag (to control foot position and to develop kicking against moving objects).
Nice vid man i too have posted a vid of myself come and check it out leave a comment on the vid and pass it on to other people every one is wellcome thanks
yeah just searched this "masters" name. Kicking with the flat of the foot. Who told you to use this as your attacking tool? It is poor. Foot sword, blade of foot, or at the very worst use the back heel to deliver the kick with attacking tool. I am gutted to see people believing in weak piss poor kicks which use the completely wrong attacking tool.. this kick will score you a point however..but it is weak in practise because it is incorrect. imagine him trying at speed? It will b even more wrong!
@misscandicotton This video shows him using the outside edge of his foot not flat as you mention here? At least it appears to me to be the edge of the foot. The rest is his technique is good also. So why are you so critical??
@housegnat because the difference between doing a kick properly & doing it wrong is enormous when confronted by a 600pound gorilla.Anyone can kick to make a force that can kick a ball out of a stadium, but when u are talking about a person who has a greater mass than u,the attacking tool has to be angled like a knife.Look closely throughout the video,.his ankle is bent upwards when he impacts which means the edge of his foot blade,is at least facing up towards the ceiling,& not towards the target
@housegnat I am critical because i was taught to kick flat footed for years, then one day when i had to kick in real life, it was just a sack of shit. A flat foot is what he is doing here, & it is good for caving in a target like a person of equal size to u, but as the opposition gets larger in mass, the ability to "pierce" the target gets more vital & important. I later found some guys who kick for real..i was introduced to the foot sword, & drilled it until it was natural and strong & piercing
@misscandicotton Well as I reveiw the footage some of it looks like it might be the flat of the foot while he is showing a back kick. But honestly it appears to me to mostly have correct edge of foot position. I have been faced with useing a side kick twice on the street. Both times it was with someone larger than I and both I put them down. I dont know what difficulties you had but videos are never the best learning tool becasue of things just like this. Profesional instruction is best.
@housegnat i will take screenshots for you of these if you cannot see it, though it's a bit concerning if you cannot see the contact point, and if I am allowed i can post them up as a reply video. will this be banned? i am not sure with the legal rights owners of the video footage. Also,..just making slow-mo playback of the video, at 0:16 the kick that "kicks" the guy over holding the pad is staged,...the man holding the pad relaxes his left leg knee (which should have been locked anyway)..
@misscandicotton No need for you try to "take screen shots". I think that simply suggesting that people make sure they use the proper foot position is sufficient. I would only be extremely critical if the practitioner was demonstrating technique that was truly bad. I have seen some vids that would even create habbits that would be difficult to ever change to correct habbit. With those vids I really have a strong voice. This is not one of them.
@housegnat take a look at a foot sword on youtube if you copy and paste in the following words to find the video " Master Kim Ung Chol performing Yop Cha Jirugi "
if you pause the video at 0.07 (i think it's 0:07seconds.. might be 0:06) you can see the blade of the foot is extended out as locked and accentuated sharply,.. this foot sword is the attacking tool to pierce the opponent. it's like a knife cutting into butter effect. thanks for taking an interest in what i observed with the kick
@misscandicotton Yes Master Kim has a great kick. BUT I realy enjoy the idea of extending the arm at the target as he kicks. Most do not do this and it seems to make sense that all of the focus would be at the target.
My own kicks have improved since Iv learned to hick with my entire body through the target, not just my kicking leg. This is the difference between fast and just a blurr.
I wonder how may times he executed a side kick to obtain this ease of execution???
